"He's a great actor. I've seen him, and he's terrific," Lee said when asked what he thinks about Donald Glover. "A lot of my Twitter followers have been saying that he ought to have a chance to audition for the role. So I tweeted back by saying, as far as I'm concerned ... anybody should have a chance to audition for the role. I certainly think he should have a chance to audition."

"And I didn't mention this in my tweet, but I'm telling you that I don't ever want to make it sound like I'm trying in any way to influence the Marvel people as to who to cast in any roles. That isn't my job. It isn't in my purview. It's something I should butt out of and I try to butt out of it — just like i don't tell them what to do with the movie."

"Because they really have been doing a pretty damn good job up 'til now!"

As for the fact that the actor is a different race to the comic book Peter Parker, Lee said that it: "shouldn't be a racial issue." However, he was quick to point out that it may not be the best idea to change the appearence of such a well known, established character, "Here's the point: We've already had the Kingpin in 'Daredevil' portrayed by a black man, where he was white in the comics, and we've had Nick Fury portrayed by a black man where he was white in the comics. But not that many people had seen these characters — not that many moviegoers are familiar with them."

"Everybody seems to be familiar with Spider-Man, so I say that it isn't that it's a racial issue — it's just that it might be confusing to people. But that's a matter for the people at Marvel to take into consideration. I certainly don't want to weigh in on it in any way, except to say I think Glover is a fine actor."

FIRST of all, Stan Lee never says anything bad about anything...

second of all, its not an issue of his skin color, its an issue of his talent. he doesnt have any.
SuperAdaptoid - 6/9/2010, 2:45 PM
Race doesnt matter at all. I like Donald because hes hilarious yet dorky enough to make it work.

THEBAMF - 6/9/2010, 2:47 PM
No way this guy is getting this gig.
HeyVanity - 6/9/2010, 2:50 PM
Don't know who he is, and he may be a good actor, but a character's race is part of their identity, and I really see no reason why changing that even needs to be considered.
divo - 6/9/2010, 2:51 PM
Im in no way a racist so lets not even start calling eachother racist. Point is, peter parker is a white kid from the suburbs and it should stay that way. Should we make a Luke Cage movie starring Brad Pitt? How about a Black Panther movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis? Let's get megan fox to play Storm. Mel Gibson would make a great Bishop in the upcoming xmen movie...
jusme6 - 6/9/2010, 2:51 PM
Well, he had a nice run

@SuperAdaptoid: That just might be the best avatar I've seen on this site in a long time!
@Shazam: You too!
JoshWilding - 6/9/2010, 2:52 PM
Firstly, I have to agree that this guy doesnt have the acting chops to pull a roll like this off. Secondly, I wouldnt care if he did - changing a major character like Spider-Man's race would be as bad as making Luke Cage or Black Panther white! I just want to see these characters portrayed on the big screen as they always have been in the comic books. That doesnt make me, or anyone else here, a racist!
saymekian - 6/9/2010, 2:52 PM
HelaGood, you are an idiot.

Have you watched Community or been to his comedy group's website, Derrek Comedy?

The kid is comedy gold and can pull off a nerd.

I have been a Marvel comic collector and reader for almost a decade, and I have no problem with him auditioning or even getting the role.

Go Donald!
conformist21 - 6/9/2010, 2:53 PM
can anybody direct me to anything that Stan says about the Ultimate Universe?
i heard he doesn't like it but i'm not sure where to get concrete conversations saying so.
travisto83 - 6/9/2010, 2:53 PM
i think they should go with jake jylenhall.
it was between him and tobey for the first spiderman movie.
Joe6Pack74 - 6/9/2010, 2:54 PM
Is this the guy that did the Chocolate Rain video on youtube?
travisto83 - 6/9/2010, 2:55 PM
or even the guy who played kick ass
DaenerysTargaryen - 6/9/2010, 2:56 PM
If he does get the role I just hope it was because they thought he was the best person for the role. :)
mk - 6/9/2010, 2:58 PM
have to agree Stan Lee... i would find it awkward if he gets it because its spiderman we're talking about..
MassExecutions1 - 6/9/2010, 3:00 PM
Stan covered it pretty well.

@divo - you might be able to talk me into Daniel Day-Lewis as Black Panther and Mel Gibson as Bishop. Of course, I KNOW they're great actors. Maybe if I'd seen that kind of evidence for this kid...
HelaGood - 6/9/2010, 3:00 PM
@saymekian wow... really? name calling?
HelaGood - 6/9/2010, 3:05 PM
@Number21 LMAO!
travisto83 - 6/9/2010, 3:10 PM
mel gibson for bishop all day.lol
or how about steve austin for luke cage.
SHAZAM171 - 6/9/2010, 3:11 PM
OK, This needs to stop. NO WAY IS THIS KID GETTING THE PETER PARKER/SPIDERMAN ROLL. WTF!!!!!!!!!
oOLaterDazeOo - 6/9/2010, 3:15 PM
I can see him playing spiderman, only if they go with a more gritty type of movie. His acting is exceptional!
Ryden - 6/9/2010, 3:15 PM
Actually Glover is incredibley atalented, he's funny and a good actor....BUT....he's not Spider-Man. And that IS because he's black, I'd just like to see the characters portrayed as they were in the comics...more specifically major charactors like Spider-Man who is arguabley the most popular superhero in the world.
travisto83 - 6/9/2010, 3:19 PM
they should get mclovin to play spiderman hes the perfect natural nerd, and he kind of proved he can fight in kick ass.
cchriswake13 - 6/9/2010, 3:22 PM
Spidey is NOT a black guy

deal with it general audiences

why not Jet Li as Batman? Antonio Banderes as Superman?

get these idiotic thoughts out
Sithsidious66 - 6/9/2010, 3:22 PM
Dudes,if you're a true comic-book fan we must not even care about this movie, that way we can make Sony hand over the rights of Spider-Man back where they belong: Marvel Studios. Ignore this non-Marvel Studios original production!
Talontd - 6/9/2010, 3:25 PM
GOD I HATE THESE "RACE" THREADS...
fanboiii - 6/9/2010, 3:28 PM
There's no way he's going to be Spider-man LOL. Not that I'm against him or anything. I think he's hilarious in Community. There's just no way Sony would change their lead from a white guy to a black guy when the franchise has done well.

They should make a Static Shock movie. There's plenty of non-white characters that can be developed into a movie.

zao89 - 6/9/2010, 3:28 PM
@divo But the difference is that race is really a main point for some of those characters. Storm and Black Panther are both African characters and Luke Cage was Marvel's Blaxploitation character (changing Bishop to a white character isn't really a big deal in my opinion. It'd be kinda like how Idris Elba is playing a white character in the Thor movie). I thought the main point of Peter Parker is that he could be anyone (even East Indian, there's a miniseries called Spider-Man India where he's changed to be Indian)
localman - 6/9/2010, 3:30 PM
If you make Peter Parker black, then you create an entire group of issues that do not currently exist in the Spider-man story. Flash Thompson beating up on Pete becomes a racial issue. J. Jonah Jameson yelling at Peter becomes a racial issue. Are you going to make MJ and or Gwen African-American, too? If not, you have interracial relationship issues.

Yes, you could make the movie and just ignore these aspects, but it would take it farther away from reality -- there is only so much "suspension of disbelief" that the audience will accept.

Glover may be a fine actor. But a "black nerd" creates a different stereotype than a "white nerd." Part of the Spider-man story is playing off of stereotypes. Little nerdy Peter Parker gains super powers, puts on a costume and becomes cool. It just won't work the same way with a "black nerd" because the "black nerd" is a play off the stereotype already. Let's face it, when you think of "black nerd," there is only one guy who comes to mind . . . Urkel from Family Matters. (Even the black "nerd" from Revenge of the Nerds was flamboyantly gay -- so not the same.)
fanboiii - 6/9/2010, 3:34 PM
LOL Stan Lee only said Glover should audition because he's a good actor. He never said he wants him to be Peter Parker.

Ultimate Fury is based on SLJ. Not the other way around.

Imagine Blade as a white guy? NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THAT, because its established Blade is a kick ass black guy, just like its established peter is a nerdy white boy.
astromerc - 6/9/2010, 3:37 PM
I'm black and I don't even want this...unless it was an alt.universe like crisis or the more recent Fantastic Four comics issues# 593-596.

I think Glover and his agent started this mess and it needs to stop now. I really do not care about people racial likes and dislikes I just love comics and movies and when the two come together it is the best.

The rest of the is is for the birds.
InFamouslyCool - 6/9/2010, 3:40 PM
yeah.. he's black, parker's not. shit, if you did want a black guy to play spiderman get one who doesn't look like this kid. one with a decent hairline at least. LOL
HelaGood - 6/9/2010, 3:41 PM
Local Man is totally right! you change the character's race and you change everything else. so much of the ordinary day-to-day bits of Peter's life would take on a whole new meaning (and most of it very negative) if he was black.

but i am against this because he is not right for the role at all. not because of his skin color. but because he is just not right. period.
UncleDrew - 6/9/2010, 3:42 PM
I have nothing against this pick. We are in
the twenty first century people, why not give
him an audition. If he is that good, give him
the part, if not move on.

I am a person who grew up with the marvel universe based on comic books. As a fan I would like Peter Parker be portrayed as a white but we are right now in a new era of equal rights and more understanding society. If you really want a spiderman movie with a black actor, first Change the origins on comicbooks. It will be a diferent transition for all of us comibook readers. Then we can talk about someone helming a movie from a diferent race. Also give black marvel character more publicity or create a new on from scratch, so we can see a bunch of black talented actors aproaching these roles. Marvel universe goes back more than 50 years, when racial factors were a market problem that did not brought the green's. Let's hope that marvel will see a great oportunity with the b-heroes to make them outstand along of their regular a-team characters

At first I thought that it was a crazy idea because of his race, but after thinkin' about it, who really cares. If he's a good actor, then why not let him give it a try. After all, not all comic book movies are 100% accurate with the books they are portraying.
BIGBMH - 6/9/2010, 4:22 PM
I love it how you all seem to think you know better than the guy who created Peter Parker.
First, let me just state that I think movie Peter should look like comic Peter. However, the reasoning some of you give is total BS.
"a black nerd is different from a white nerd" "making him black changes the whole story" "Flash picking on black Peter makes it a race issue" (not exact quotes but that's the gist)
My question is this: why? Is there a fundemental difference created by race that makes the protrayal of a black nerd different than a white nerd? No. It's just stupid media influenced stereotypes. Black Peter can live in the same place as whte Peter, talk the same way, and do the same things. Flash picking on him doesn't have to be a race issue. It could easilly be fixed by either showing him hang ot with people like Randy roberts and Hobie Brown or showing him pick on Harry too. Simple. Jameson picking on Peter? Who is his closest friend that we know of? Joe Robertson. Case closed on that one.
KIDDSOUL - 6/9/2010, 4:26 PM
Yeah this is pretty dumb to even get into. Parker is white. And when will we ever see a Marvel or DC established lead ethnic superhero besides Blade,War machine and that incredibly awful Steel movie?
