Captain America: The First Avenger Grosses More Internationally Than Domestically!

In what The Hollywood Reporter are describing as a "shocker", the patriotic movie from Marvel Studio has now grossed more at the international box office, despite fears that audiences would be put off by the title...

Personally, I always found the belief that the "America" part of Captain America: The First Avenger a little ridiculous. While Marvel Studios decided to drop the first two words altogether in Russia, Ukraine and South Korea, they left it alone everywhere else, and it's seemingly paid off! The Hollywood Reporter have revealed some details about the movies international box office performance, and it looks like this is yet another hit for Marvel. Here is an excerpt from their report.

To date, the superhero tentpole has grossed $178 million internationally, compared to $173.5 million at the domestic box office. The overseas tally includes a strong $5 million opening in China over the Sept. 9-11 weekend. It’s hardly uncommon for a summer event pic -- and especially a 3D title -- to do bigger business internationally, but many assumed Captain America wouldn’t play as well among foreign audiences because of its title.

In Europe, Captain America has done strong business, although it hasn’t reached the levels of Thor or Fox’s 2011 summer offering X-Men: First Class. For example, the pic has grossed $15.5 million in the U.K., versus $22.5 million for Thor. Captain America has grossed $10 million in France, $9 million in Italy, $8.5 million in Spain and $5 million Germany. Russia’s tally is $8.5 million, and Australia’s, $11.5 million.

Not bad! With the DVD and Blu-Ray set to be released later this year, I don't think that there can now be any doubt that we'll be seeing Chris Evans once again don the mantle of Captain America on the big screen in a solo movie after The Avengers. Be sure to share your thought in the usual place!

We import American films all the and TV is filled with US TV shows...why would we (and by we I'm referring to Australia here) be thrown off by a title with 'America' in it? It's been sold as a kick ass WWII superhero movie, and both US WWII movies and US superhero films are quite popular here. And I'm sure it's similar in other countries, it's annoying how they think that the rest of the world hates the US so much. All the unfavourable US policies and the things they've done (like the war on terror) have been joint operations with the all these other countries. No one hates the US and I don't think anyone would overlook their huge contribution to winning world war II, so who really cares if the title has America in it. To me it would only seem likely it would fail in countries that are at war with the states. And I'm ending this rant here, quality film which I can't wait to see again :D

And why? Because everyone wants to come to America, everyone wants to be an American... except, it seems, a certain group of the American people who can't stop blaming America for everything wrong in the world. Well, the world just said "Screw you! We love America!".... but those Americans still don't get it.

I bet even Osama was looking forward to this film... so glad he missed it.

For me, it was not just a fantastic comicbook movie but also a really good popcorn flick; and since Spielberg got old we rarely see them anymore. I can't wait for the Avengers!

Captain America is a great character and the film had a great story.

People went to see it for those reasons.

It's the same with movies such as James Bond - he's a very British character but I doubt anyone makes decisions about going to watch Bond movies based on whether they like Britain or not.

It's still doing pretty well here in the States and it still has to open in Japan. I expect it will pull in some big dough from Japan because they just love us so much :)

@marantaz... erhhm I don't have a thing against America, I like the country, but I'm quite happy here in Brazil, so your "everyone wants to come to America, everyone wants to be an American" doesn't apply to me :P

Try and be a bit more open-minded. Maybe there are other cool places besides the one you live.

Shut up, you idiots.
Captain America doing good outside has absolutely NOTHING to do with being american.

First of all: AMERICA is a continent, not only the COUNTRY United States of America. So, please, stop with this BS of calling the USA as America. BRAZIL IS AMERICA. ARGENTINA IS AMERICA. MEXICO IS AMERICA. Hello?

Second, what's all this pride about? It's just a movie. Duh!

And, Mr. @marantaz, I can assure you that not everybody (and by that I mean ALMOST NOBODY) wants to live in America or, worse, live in the USA.

Please, USA, get over yourselves.
Thanks.

It's funny how the popular American ideal is that "everybody wants to be American and everybody wants to go to America" when actually its quite the opposite! I'm British and I don't hate America but I understand why so many people I know despise the polices of the country and some actually really do hate Americans.

Back tot the propaganda headline report, Captain America making more internationally then domestically.. lol, hardly! It's only made $5 million more than its domestic total, that's hardly worth shouting about!

Internationally, Thor made $86 million more than its domestic. So what? If a film makes very little domestically and just a couple million more internationally how's that something to bark about if worldwide its total is still low. Not that I'm saying Cap.A is a flop, it's not, it's a decent sized hit, just not a huge one at $350 million world wide compare to Thor's $448 or Iron Man's $585 million. X-Men First Class has made $352 million worldwide of which it's international tally of $206 mill is $60 million more than it's domestic! That dwarfs Cap.A's £5 million headline difference and they've basically made the same box office world wide, why aint that movie in the headline instead?

Pointless headline and inaccurate too with that crap about opening with $5 million in China being strong, that's pretty terrible when the average is about $12 million in China. Like I said, I don't hate America, but enough with the propaganda headlines!

Honestly, it would probably do even better in Europe had it not been a WWII film. The USA had the happiest outcome of the war, what with being on the winning side and getting to go home to a thriving economy and cities untouched by the devastation. Europeans are understandably less thrilled with that whole ordeal.

I think the film will just grow in popularity as more people discover it on video and television, and I think Cap 2 won't have any stigma to overcome at all.

@marvel72 - It's not Planet America? When the [frick] did this happen? I didn't get the memo! ;) JK!

@juniorwho - Chill out dude. I am a very patriotic American but I certainly don't believe everyone wants to live here.

While there are two continents with the America name, North America and South America, generally when someone refers to America or Americans they are referring to us unless they say AmericaS. I could be wrong but I don't think Brazilians, Argentines and Mexicans refer to themselves as Americans. If I'm wrong, someone other than juniorwho please let me know.

@JackBauer - Canadians don't like to call themselves "Americans" but they don't like when we do because they are in America too...I don't give a crap though. When someone says America everybody in the entire world knows what you're talking about, and it's the important part of NORTH America: The United States.

Canada is Canada. Brazil is Brazil. Mexico is Mexico. 'The United States of America' is too long for their lazy inhabitants to say so it's just America.

does that also means, everyone wants to be a norway or an australian, cause THOR did overseas much better :D
does it mean everyone wants to be a blue alien as an avatar? cause wow that made even quite more even domestic, and the bad guys in Avatar seemed most like the US Military and they lost at the end against "Indians" so refering to this logic, Avatar is the most successful movie because everyone hates the USA ;) just kidding lol

bit stupid, i think captain america would have scored 10years ago much more than now, just because the USA had a better reputation that time.
I mean Tiger Hidden Dragon was also really successful and does that mean everyone loves china, do Americans want to live in china?:P

what about Wolverine he is canadian!
Magneto is jewish ;)

at the end Captain America has a fanbase ,and Marvel as well thats the reason why its succesful overseas, i also read the Avengers comics, doesnt have to do that he is American lol.
I guess if Captain Africa would come out Americans wouldnt laugh about it ;)

besides in germany (who is not in war with the USA) CA did poorly compared to other industrialized countries.

myself i wish CA would make more than 400 Million in total but cause i love the comic and marvel ;)

besides i like America, and yeah thanks to America WW2 end well! but i dont wanna live inside, i like America (the USA) cause of the nice people i know, not cause of the patriotism -->look at MIcheal Bay, best example
too much patriotism is just bad, not only in the US, also in Europe, Asia or somewhere else!
