WARNING: Catwoman #1 Spoilers Ahead!

While the title has been positively received by most comic book fans, some reviewers haven't been kind to Judd Winick's first issue of Catwoman. It seems that a few of them weren't best pleased with her portrayal (the last couple of pages from the comic below may give you an idea of what's bothered them so much) and Newsarama reached out to the writer to get his take on this.

This is a Catwoman for 2011, and my approach to her character and actions reflect someone who lives in our times. And wears a cat suit. And steals. It’s a tale that is part crime story, part mystery and part romance. In that, you will find action, suspense and passion. Each of those qualities, at times, play to their extremes. Catwoman is a character with a rich comic book history, and my hope is that readers will continue to join us as the adventure continues.

Thanks to Bleeding Cool for the following scans.

Personally, I found Catwoman #1 to be well written and great fun. Her portrayal seemed fitting, while most reviewers seem to have missed the point that she was in fact using her looks (well, boobs most of the time!) as a weapon/distraction. I'd definitely recommend picking the title up this week, but for those you who have read it, what did you think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

TorturedXGenius - 9/22/2011, 3:16 PM
personally, i didnt find anything controversial with this issue, ppl who know about Selena & Bruce know they have a sexual/romantic relationship, it's only natural that it would come out, especially when Selena was being attacked, and had a adrenaline pumping sequence taking down a ex-con the pages before, bruce showed up and she confines in him. Like before it's only natural their passion for each other comes out.
StrangerX - 9/22/2011, 3:18 PM

Ashdm - 9/22/2011, 3:34 PM
I like Slutty Catwoman, but wow! this is a bit racy for a comic book? Isn't this aimed at kids?

Anybody who agrees with Winick or thinks it was appropriate to have her act as she did needs to read this article. Now. It also addresses the issues in Red Hood.
Blagyver - 9/22/2011, 3:42 PM
And as far as "well duh, they've been having sex for 40 years", that's not the point. The point is that it was wholly unnecessary to show them doing it in the last panel like a creepy hentai artist might do. That page isn't about aiding the story, it's about giving fanboys boners. Now, I'm all for having a boner, don't get me wrong, but Catwoman just came across as tasteless.
MagnaSolaris - 9/22/2011, 3:42 PM
i think it was one of the best things that happened in the Batman-Catwoman relation in the last ten years. I don't understand this people, because is fine that Deadpool or Punisher KILL PEOPLE (sometimes in very bizarre ways) but Catwoman can't have a romantic-erotic scene with her eternal love interest??? wtf???
Thunderkutfo - 9/22/2011, 3:44 PM
The next day: Batman: "Alfred can you pick me up some salve while you're out and about today?"

rbfn04 - 9/22/2011, 3:54 PM
ANd so it continues. DCnU panders to oversexed, OMG it's edgy and dark, teenagers...

SpiderManofHouseStark - 9/22/2011, 3:58 PM
wow i hope anne hathaway portrays catwoman like this
One2ephu - 9/22/2011, 3:59 PM
I don't understand this aspect to society. The broadcast and depiction of murder, torture, assault, and violence is almost entirely normal and acceptable. Yet the natural, non-harmful and beautiful act of love making is so frowned upon and is attacked when displayed in a media/art form?
marvel72 - 9/22/2011, 4:06 PM
batman defeated by s.t.d.
StuckInPanels - 9/22/2011, 4:08 PM
further proving out society is ok with drugs and murder, but boobs...SCANDAL!!!!....seriously people need to grow up and enjoy a comic. It was well written and enjoyable comic, Its not meant for kids or younger readers, she is a sexualized idol, she uses her body as a tool to get her goals completed.
rbfn04 - 9/22/2011, 4:11 PM
What MrEko said.

Also, really, slutty, gory, oversexed, comics are good comics now?

Catwoman is introduced to the public in a lacy red underwear. spends half the comic half naked. and people don't think there's nothing wrong with that...
One2ephu - 9/22/2011, 4:11 PM
@mreko
Kid say to father
"Is murder and violence okay?"
"Is sex okay?"

One answer is human and the other is entirely un-human.
One2ephu - 9/22/2011, 4:11 PM
@mreko
If you pick the first, you're [frick]ed
Fogs - 9/22/2011, 4:12 PM
Who are they fooling, everyone knows bats like birds... robins, more specifically. :PP
Bojac - 9/22/2011, 4:14 PM
Boo hoo, Batman and Catwoman do it. It's Catwoman, is it REALLY that surprising? A character who used to be a hooker right? Heaven forbid she doesn't dress conservatively.

Plus I mean it's Judd Winick. I wasn't gonna read this book anyways.

Calm down, sensitive ass fanbois.
NextHero08 - 9/22/2011, 4:16 PM
OMG THIS IS SOOOOO NOT LIKE CATWOMAN, I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST SAW THAT, WHAT WAS DC THINKING??? Seriously, people have nothing better to do? Watch Batman Returns again people and tell me you don't see similarities. [frick] people piss me off...
rbfn04 - 9/22/2011, 4:20 PM
@NextHero really!? Batman Returns is similar to that!? Sure, dude... Sure...
AGENTJAY1130 - 9/22/2011, 4:23 PM
WOW!!!! WTF!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS !!!!!!
One2ephu - 9/22/2011, 4:25 PM
@metalmachine
Really, wonderwoman's costume has really changed for half a century. Actually shes been wearing pants now??????? Its this kind of ancient, religious, overly conservative views that elect idiots like bush and stunts the progression of society. I'll say it again why shun sex and glorify murder and violence?? And what perspective is truly harmfull to a childs thought processes?
AGENTJAY1130 - 9/22/2011, 4:27 PM
PORN IN THE COMICS GOTTA LOVE IT!!! LOLOLOL
AGENTJAY1130 - 9/22/2011, 4:28 PM
WONDER WOMEN IS GOING TO KICK BATS ASS!!!!! LOLOLOL
13Deadpool13 - 9/22/2011, 4:32 PM
ok, so i see no problem with this for us....but for kids, lol. Come on people, we've all known they've been doin the dirty deed for a long time now. I actually think it's about time they make it obvious and stop beating around the bush...haha, beating around the bush, lol. sorry i had a family guy moment....But this is supposed to be for kids, it's a comic after all. That makes this unacceptable....Put it in a graphic novel and then i say it's A OK!
13Deadpool13 - 9/22/2011, 4:33 PM
oh and catwoman said"Still...It doesn't last long..." HA, batman's a 1 min man, lol.
Speedy - 9/22/2011, 4:34 PM
You guys believe comics are for kids... you really [frick]ing beleive that, don't you? Have you ever read a comic? Most are for teens and up. Everyone who says they're for kids out to have a little "nutjob/crazy" badge next to his name. Yeah, something like Super Hero Squad is for kids. But have you read a damn comic recently? NOT FOR "KIDS".
Thunderkutfo - 9/22/2011, 4:35 PM
nice pics, pass the jergens! *unzips pants*
One2ephu - 9/22/2011, 4:42 PM
This kind of stuff is common in comics native to europe and japan. Yet theres ten-fold more murder and aggression in north america. Maybe north america is sex starved and over saturated with death?
superotherside - 9/22/2011, 4:44 PM

nuff said... please no sex, or spandex, in comics... make better characters instead... seriously I thought I might be able to show my kids the DCnU... now... meh... reboot... j/k

but please DC no more comics like this...
ArmoredAsgardian - 9/22/2011, 4:45 PM
I guess its no big deal (unless I was a parent and saw my my 9 year old reading it) it isn't showing anything pornographic. I agree and disagree with sexual things being in comics. I know they aren't for kids, but kids still read them, don't they? Like I said if I saw my 9 yr old reading that i'd be like "OK, LETS GO WATCH THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD!"
ACira - 9/22/2011, 4:48 PM
It's not surprising that they're [frick]ing, but it was pretty tasteless to have it shown in a comic book.

Characters like Punisher and Deadpool who graphically murder other characters are OK, because they're quite obscure characters compared to Batman, and wouldn't have fans under the age of around 16, or at least fans who can consciously and morally know the difference between fiction and reality. But Batman has fans who are little kids, what if some 5 year old Batman fan's mother were to pick this up for her son/daughter, knowing Batman would be in the comic, only to find their child seeing that?
There again, with the dark (and frankly, better) route Batman comics have been taking the last 10 or so years, most parents would know by now these books are more teen/adult aimed.

But there should definitely be a warning sticker or logo on the cover of the book, so only people who are old enough to see this stuff pick up the book and are able to buy it.
razor - 9/22/2011, 4:52 PM
Seriously people, this isn't anything you don't see in a PG13 movie or on TV. Unstuff your shirts! Plus, everytime I walk into a comic shop, there is not one kid in sight...ever! It's all people over the age of 21.
bababoozer - 9/22/2011, 4:53 PM
It's a comic about a chick. Who the f_u_c_k is reading that garbage anyway? Winnick? LMFA
NOLANITE - 9/22/2011, 4:56 PM
ALL DONE. :)
DioFoRio - 9/22/2011, 5:01 PM
