COMICS: First Look At The Flash #1; Writer/Artist Francis Manapul Reveals New Details!

Some great preview art has been revealed from The Flash #1 (including a meeting between the hero and his pre-New 52 wife, Iris West) as well as details on the direction of the series from co-writer and artist Francis Manapul...

"We have a bit of a leeway in [exploring ‘comic book science,’" co-writer and artist Francis Manapul told CNN in a recent interview. "What’s been really fun is finding real world scientific facts and pushing the ideas. When you read science journals where they’re theorizing, we’re able to ask, 'what if that wasn’t just a theory, but it was real?' With Barry [Allen, the Flash's altar ego] being a scientist himself, there’s lots of ways we can explore that."

"This may not be [scientifically] possible for us to do, but the Flash can do it. Readers [today] are more science savvy. They need that little wedge of cheese to bring them along, to let them know it’s based on science. We’re putting steroids on science and we’re pumping it up,"
he added. There's much more to be found over at the site, so be sure to click on the link below for that, but here's some of the preview art they also revealed...

Apologies in advance for the layout and quality of the following preview pages. CNN have embedded them in a slideshow meaning that the only way we could share them on CBM was via screengrabs.

The Fastest Man Alive returns to his own monthly series from the writer/artist team of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato! The Flash knows he can’t be everywhere at once, but what happens when he faces an all-new villain who really can! As if that’s not bad enough, this villain is a close friend!

The ONLY DC superhero that actually matters due to his hyper coolness. Looking forward to this read. Hope they bring back Wally West though, the best Flash
StuckInPanels - 9/23/2011, 6:56 PM
the artwork looks pretty sweet

First Block

Looks interesting. Not sure about the art, but I might warm up to it. I'm curious in how they plan on how they use the science angle. I always liked the flash, but wondered how he got around without damaging property.

Why did they miss the mark on every redesign? Lose the chinstrap and the unnecessary lines!

Also, another jerk sounding superhero?
CBMfan001 - 9/23/2011, 6:59 PM
the comic i was greatly anticipating after batman, love Barry Allen and his flash, its good that DC is not having too many flash characters and is focusing on one flash,so that people will find it easy to understand.

Barry Allen is the best flash, the flash n hopefully they will keep it that way, love the preview :)

Enjoy Manapul's art, but him also in writing duty is the definition of spreading it too thin.
therj00 - 9/23/2011, 7:21 PM
Manupal's art looked better on Johns run, should have kept the colorist, the costume changes were kind of not needed i think too
rbfn04 - 9/23/2011, 7:26 PM
@Nephillim don't hate EVERY redesign. Only the bad ones (Tim Drake, I'm lookin at you).

I think Superman's missed the mark with being an armour and the shield shape and lines everywhere.

Barry's would look way better without the strap and extra lines
JDUKE25 - 9/23/2011, 7:27 PM
Eh...not really sure about the art. Not terrible but not the best I've seen.
SunfireUrA55 - 9/23/2011, 7:35 PM
And what is new/cool about it? Guess they couldn't take note from the Justice League animated series by making his eyes like Batman's. A very dumb move!
LoudLon - 9/23/2011, 7:38 PM
Not digging that artwork...
Sortis - 9/23/2011, 8:10 PM
Looks good, love the art.

The minute you start bringing characters back to life, your comic stops any chance of actually progressing and starts regressing. This stupid comic is now the worst hit from DC being kindergarten level with its story telling by having someone who died over 20 years ago come back to replace his natural successor AND then go through another ridiculous reboot to present him as yet another ageless spandex idiot for fanboys to feel comfortable knowing that no matter how old they get, their favourite characters will never age and never die on them like some pansy Peter Pan!
MaddMonkk - 9/23/2011, 8:24 PM
THANK GOD THEY GOT RID OF SCOT KOLINS!!!!!!!now maybe we can get some decent art work.
AlReg - 9/23/2011, 8:40 PM
I really like Barry Allen and I love the art of Francis Manupal but Barry without Iris is something that bothers me. Probably because his new love interest did not interest me.
AGENTJAY1130 - 9/23/2011, 8:43 PM
LOVE THE FLASH!! COOL IM DOWN!!
Batman5 - 9/23/2011, 9:21 PM
shut up and gtfo marvel fanfags. the flash is awesome, prolly my favorite dc character outside of the batman family(captain marvel is also a very close 2nd). And barry allen IS THE FLASH! Cannot wait for this, ive picked up most of the new dc titles, more than i thought i wld, and i really havnt been dissapointed by any of them. this relaunch is much better than i expected and the way they are selling out of EVERYTHING, things are looking good for dc right now.
xXkryptoniteXx - 9/23/2011, 9:26 PM
Flash has the best costume and doesn't need any changes like spiderman and captain America.

Always loved the Flash! All he needs is his own movie.
hush - 9/24/2011, 1:17 AM
I'll be picking this up, love the artwork.

The only relaunch title that made me go 'Meh' was Redhood and The Outlaws. Every other one I have read has been pretty fantastic
bababoozer - 9/24/2011, 2:03 AM
Crap artwork.
marvel72 - 9/24/2011, 4:09 AM
this title is on my to get list, along with green lantern, red lanterns, swamp thing, animal man & justice league dark.
Ichaos - 9/24/2011, 5:56 AM
@rbfn04 DC thinks bringing new life to their comics is to add a bunch or random and sensless seams into costumes and color changes (like changing Supermans aleged underwear on the outside from red to blue) and call that updating instead of just getting good writers that dont need the gimick of rebooting the entire universe so they can retell 80 year old stories but now they have cell phones and seams
BATMANx - 9/24/2011, 6:21 AM
It looks Great
PirateOpossum - 9/24/2011, 6:39 AM
Sweet!
rbfn04 - 9/24/2011, 7:29 AM
@Ichaos exactly! Also, "put the shape of the shield on ALL things" - yes, I imagine Johns, Lee and DiDio saying that just like the meme...

GrandmasterZoom - 9/24/2011, 7:41 AM
Awesome. Really looking forward to this one. Just read Flash: Rebirth a few weeks back and that got me pumped for anything Flash related :D
RobinNumbah6 - 9/24/2011, 9:01 AM
Manapul told me in a tweet thst the villains are supposed to be look alikes of him and his friends
RobinNumbah6 - 9/24/2011, 9:01 AM
just a fun fact
ScarletVendetta - 9/24/2011, 10:50 AM
Hey look! DC made Flash one of the worthy! Where is his hammer?
Phlegmbot - 9/24/2011, 11:44 AM
I don't understand who told Jim Lee that more-complex costume designs are what's "in" on the superhero catwalk. Most of the new costumes are awful -- like this one. The minor tweaks just make this a mess.

Also, every one of the top-tier heroes have the same exact personality or at least talk the same.

Awful.
rbfn04 - 9/24/2011, 11:55 AM
@WallyWest Mmm, yeah, they only glow when he's running, but they are there fulltime.

@Phlegmbot these redesigns are straight from the 90s. half expecting to see more pouches and leather jackets...
ScarletVendetta - 9/24/2011, 1:35 PM
Lol i'm almost ashamed of myself for this but... i always liked the 90s leather jacket style lol, in fact i'm really diggin' the Red Hood.

I know... there's something wrong with me...
ScarletVendetta - 9/24/2011, 1:44 PM
ps @ WallyWestNAM:

Lol dude i was just jocking before, flash costume looks better than most in this relaunch, it's just the glowing lines artist seem to love so much lately, i dunno if you picked up Fear Itself, but most of the characters now have Tron like glowing stripes... even on naked skin... seems overused

And the boots, IMO would've been better with red boots like the tv version :)

Ps: look at what i've found on Brett Booth Blog

This is not going to be used in the new 52, but still it's nice to know Wally West is not forgotten
Thunderkutfo - 9/24/2011, 2:24 PM
Looks good but i too liked Wally West and hope he's going to be around.
Fastestmanalive - 9/24/2011, 4:54 PM
Love the Flash, Hate the art, so I'm kinda torn on this one.
Phlegmbot - 9/26/2011, 5:52 PM

@rbfn04: Agreed! When the first trickle of info came out about the Justice League on this redesign, it immediately called to mind Heroes Reborn.

Several people on boards, and several friends, told me I was exaggerating.

Since then, I've heard/read the comment numerous times. This doesn't mean you can't enjoy the DCnU -- much of it is very cool -- but it really is very similar to Heroes Reborn in a lot of ways.
