COMICS: Incredible Hulk #1 Review

Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri reinvent the Hulk. But is it worth reading?

Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri kick off their run on the Incredible Hulk with this issue. They have a pretty tough act to follow; Greg Pak's stellar 4 year run on the character. Aaron needs to explore some original material if he wants to keep the keep the book fresh. Does he succeed? For the most part yes. Marc Silvestri's art is pretty fantastic for this kind of book. Giant monsters have rarely looked better. There are some cool monster battles in this issue that look amazing thanks to Silvestri. As for the plot itself...there isn't really much of one yet. That's not to say that the writing is bad, just that this issue is mostly set-up for the bigger story. We get to see a Hulk who is free of Banner, and rather than being a mindless monster, he is an introspective hero of the moloids who is just seeking peace. Of course, that peace is interrupted by some government agents who want Hulk's help in stopping none other than Bruce Banner. It's an interesting role reversal, and I'm definitely excited to see how it will play out. Bruce Banner is seen at the end of this issue as a kind of (SPOILERS) mad scientist experimenting with gamma on various animals. We get to see some funky mutant pigs and I'm sure that's only the beginning of the monstrosities Banner has created. I'll say that I find this characterization of Banner to be a bit odd as it doesn't really mesh with any previous interpretations of him, but I'm willing to give Aaron the benefit of the doubt and hope that he further explains Banner's behavior in the issues to come. Overall, this is a good start and I hope Aaron will proceed to elaborate on his ideas and further flesh out the character of crazy Bruce Banner.

i've only read the latest wolverine comic by jason aaron & i thought it was pretty good,i'll definetly be picking up wolverine & the x-men & the incredible hulk.

tell a lie i've also read dark avengers/uncanny x-men utopia which was also a very good read.

I read this a few hours ago. Overall it's a pretty accurate review, and I do share your sentiment about sticking with it because there is definitely an 'End-Game' here Aaron is aiming for which I feel will be a good pay-off. The Moloids were kinda cool- never thought a moloid could look HOT BTW- and the art is what you'd expect from Silvestri.
Yeah , I did enjoy seeing Hulk introspective - I would use the same word to describe his demeanor.

Brruce split was done before on John Byrne's 6 issue run in the 80's,while doing gamma experiments on animals was done in Ang Lee's movie.The plot points seem like a retread of things that did'nt work in the past.Maybe Jason Aaron can make it work now.

Thanks everybody. All of ever read of Aaron's was Ultimate Comics Captain America, and I really enjoyed that. I'm definitely glad he didn't dumb the hulk down(Jeph Loeb), but separating Banner and Hulk was an odd choice after Greg Pak had the two more in tune than they have been in a while. I'm still intrigued with the new angle and will keep reading.

I kinda dig the art, I did enjoy Peter David's run on the Hulk, great stories there!

I want to see two things.

1. Wolverine show up. I wonder how him and this 'new' hulk would get along?

2. This Hulk on the Avengers. Perhaps he'll gain a sense of responsibility?

Good review dude. Hopefully this gets better and the two become one again. Because while this is interesting You can't have the two separated for to long. I hope not. Because if that what their aiming for Stan Lee's gonna have a heart attack for ruining the modern day Jekkyle and Hyde.

@maddmonk....dude you have a point about the front butt....it looks like he started drawing hulk from the back, then decided to make him face us...look at him from the neck down....even the feet and legs look backward....I may just be REEEEEEAAAAAALLLLLY high.

I can see it as well, freakin me out and I aint that high!
Something is not quite right with it but it still looks cool at a glance.

Apart from that the story seems cool, I hope he isn't a de-powered hulk though
due to his intelligence. He needs to get rod of Banner for good, can't stand him.

HULK has always been better on his own, although WW HULK 4 LIFE!

Yo, I try not to agree with Intruder--which usually isn't very difficult to do--but anyone who thinks Jason Aaron is overrated comes off sounding very, very stupid. That guy can write.

When Jeff Parker is done with his brilliant Red Hulk run he should sign on and fix the Banner Hulk, because Red is the only Hulk worth reading these days...

art looks awesome but i must agree with the consensus, sad to say. i know the HULK mythos very well, this is a "gimmick" thats been done before every 10 yrs they try "new" interpretations of the HULK but it always returns to the "2nd act"/Savage Green. all MARVEL characters do it they can only go in one direction so long till they have to tighten the reigns again. for example...F4, Spider-man, etc.

I couldn't get into this issue to be honest. The art was terrible, and the story was merely average IMO. Wolverine & The X-Men is much better.

It sounds as though it's set up with a complete reversal of John Byrne's run: Bruce is unstable without the Hulk. There's not direct resemblance to the crap that Ang Lee made.
