Variety report that Guy Ritchie has cast Eric Bana as Uther Pendragon, father of the future King Arthur, in his big-screen Knights Of The Round Table adaptation for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow. Apparently they were also looking at Liam Neeson for the role, who actually played one of Arthur's Knights (Gawain) in John Boorman's Excalibur back in the '80s. Bana joins Charlie Hunnam as Arthur, with Astrid Berges-Frisbey playing Guinevere, and Jude Law still in talks for the villainous uncle role. Idris Elba was at one time up for the "Merlin-esque figure who trains and mentors Arthur", but now Djimon Hounsou is the man they want for that character. The film is being envisioned as the first of a six-part saga, with Akiva Goldsman and Tory Tunnell producing, and Joby Harold (Awake, Edge Of Tomorrow) on script duty. Knights Of The Round Table: King Arthur is set for a July 22, 2016 release.

Wow, this sounds great, and having Joby Harold working on the script is fantastic considering what he did with Edge of Tomorrow.

Oh, and The Man from UNCLE looks fantastic.

I absolutely love Arturian Legend. My favorite bbook is The Once and Future King by TH White. Eric Bana as Uther? Great! Though I imagine it's not a very big role?
Now, Charlie Hunnam.......he will be playing one of the most cherished, revered, and interesting characters (imo) ever inked on page and I am just not happy with it. IMO he is a serviceable actor. His stupid swagger walk he does, has done since Freaks and Geeks makes me want to stab him with rusty, jagged pointy things. I hope to god he can change my mind because I think everything else this project has going for it is gold.

I feel like the story of King Arthur has been told so many times... Six movies is a lot to tell a story.

I mean, all those movies together will run about 18 hours total.

If the movie turns out to be a great adaption, I'll rent it.

this story has been told many times, that's why it's too bad that the female they cast as guineviere isn't hot and is skeletal. they basically cast a keira knightley version 2.0 who is skinny-ass and flat as an iron board.

couldn't they've cast Hayley Atwell as Guineviere instead?

This movie is SO racist, why haven't they forcibly inserted non-canon black characters into the legend of King Arthur. I mean it's all fiction so the characters can be whatever white producers and directors decide, right? To appease my white guilt I won't be happy until they fire Charlie Hunnanum and cast someone more appropriate for the role of King Arthur like...

This movie will be good. Don't know how Merlin became an African man in England during the first millennia AD, but...whatever.

@Tetrahedron - Merlin?? Idris Elba was at one time up for the "Merlin-esque figure who trains and mentors Arthur", but now Djimon Hounsou is the man they want for that character.

Can't really tell sarcasm through text so idk if you're joking. But to each his own. I think it would be cool for them to mix it up but I don't think they're racist.

On a side note - 6 films?? really?? that's a little much. I'm curious if it will be a story line continuing against the same villain (LOTR/Hobbit) or if they will be separate stories with different goals and just small continuity nods.

"Camelot!"

"CAMELOT!"

"Camelot.."

"It's only a model..."

"Shhh.."

"Knights,I welcome you to your new home...Let us RIDE..To..CAMELOT!"

*cue musical number*

Sorry, any time I hear about a new King Arthur movie,I start quoting Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Though if Ritchie was smart it wouldn't hurt to have Castle Anthrax in his films...lol

Have yet to see a King Arthur film better Boorman's masterpiece EXCALIBUR. The direrctor's cut of King Arthur was damn good but EXCALIBUR...still holds up great.

Git Liam Neeson with a different role, he could make a great Merlin, but I'm confused are they are replacing Merlin with this "Merlin-esqe" role or what?

I'm down with Idris Elba as not-Merlin or whatever, but Djimon Honsou? That's just odd. Would the character be French, I guess?

Really cool news, Eric Bana is a great actor and it's good to see him getting to be in another comic series. Charlie Hunnam as Arthur though, just makes pandas sad. Poor pandas.

Being a fan of the Grail Romances and the 1980's 'Excalibur', I'm not feeling too good about this film. I'm going to watch it on GP since it's a Guy Richie film, but still... this isn't coming together as had hoped.

@ DonkeyTeeth - YES!!! King Arthur and the Knights of Justice!!! Thought I was the only one that remembered that!! As for the franchise, Arthurian Legends have been expanded to include several baddies, so we could have Morgan le Fey, Mordred, The Green Knight, and more.
