EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Kurtzman & Orci Talk "Locke & Key"

As if they didn’t have their hands full producing Hawaii 5-0 this fall, and writing both Cowboys & Aliens and Star Trek 2, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are also producing the TV version of Joe Hill’s Locke & Key for the Fox network, and in this exclusive interview they discuss it briefly.

Of the plotline for the graphic novel, Amazon.com describes: “Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them.... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all...!”

As to what drew them to the project, Orci enthuses, “It’s not often that you read a graphic novel where you can imagine dialogue that’s in the novel going right to the script. That’s a gift.”

“When we read the graphic novel,” Kurtzman adds, “it became clear it was a work of absolute genius. I mean, Joe Hill is brilliant, and we were very drawn in by the beautiful drawings, Gabriel Rodriguez’ drawings are unbelievable, and the world that they created was so emotional and so surreal, and yet grounded in a very beautiful family story. Really a story about a family trying to repair itself after suffering major trauma – and then, add to that the idea of a haunted house with an endless set of keys that open up different powers and abilities, and it just felt like something we'd be first in line to watch.”

Btw, is this a series or mini series?!?
tazmaniak - 9/14/2010, 3:54 PM
It's a series. The first is supposed to air over the summer, so it will probably be about 12/13 episodes. That's good, as they won't have to stretch out the story.

They started the series with a 6 issue story that served as the prologue. They intend for Locke and Key to consist of 3 acts, each containing 2 six issue miniseries, for a total 42 issues.

I think the setup of 12 issues per arc fits perfectly with a 12/13 episode season.Even if they end it when they plan, that's 3 seasons worth of material.

In order to maintain the flow of the story, I think they should either make the initial prologue miniseries the first season, make it part of the first season and give it a few more episodes or make it a tv film that debuts before the series does.
