Marc Webb Says 'I Don't Know' On Shailene Woodley Returning In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) says he's unsure about Shailene Woodley (Divergent) still playing Mary Jane Watson in "The Amazing Spider-Man 3."

By now, everyone knows that Shailene Woodley's brief cameo has been cut from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." However, when asked whether Woodley would return as Mary Jane Watson in "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" director Marc Webb stated, "I don't know, she has a lot on her plate. We haven't really crossed that bridge yet." An interesting answer as Woodley was originally signed up for a multi-picture deal, so if Sony truly wanted her to return there should really be little issue. It was previously reported that Sony would highlight Woodley's scheduling conflicts due to her lead in "Divergent" as the reason that the actress was unavailable to return to the role of Mary Jane and use that as the reason for a recast. But remember, Woodley signed up for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" first, so Sony's contract should theoretically trump whatever was negotiated with Summit/Lionsgate.

Previously, Webb issued the following statement when news of Woodley's removal became public. "I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."

And here...we...go.
Mike89 - 7/25/2013, 12:24 PM
I'm glad they decided not to inlude Mary Jane. If they're gonna kill off Gwen Stacy in TASM 2 i dont think it make sense to bring in Mary Jane. Why not let Peter mourn her death first? then as he moves on Mary Jane comes into his life.
Highflyer - 7/25/2013, 12:28 PM
@Mike89, you are right about Peter mourning first.
DukeAcureds - 7/25/2013, 12:36 PM
I agree, it's not a good idea to have MJ, yet.
I'll tell you one thing that Woodley has, though. Ass.
DukeAcureds - 7/25/2013, 12:36 PM
Good ass.
MrMartinMarvel - 7/25/2013, 12:39 PM
@JesterTrav STOP SCREAMING!!!!!!!!!!!!
JDUKE25 - 7/25/2013, 12:39 PM
I have an answer.

No.
MarvelsDarkKnight - 7/25/2013, 12:40 PM
save her for the 5th film=D
fettastic - 7/25/2013, 12:44 PM
The bitch got shit-canned. I don't know how much clearer it can get short of Sony coming out and saying "Look....[frick] that fugly bitch!"
TayDee - 7/25/2013, 12:45 PM
Why I agree with the whole cutting her out of the film, the whole let Peter mourn first thing is ridiculous. It was the fact that Gwen died that made him and MJ get together in the first place. As soon as she died, MJ was in the picture.
jlabatman - 7/25/2013, 12:46 PM
I blame Ror and his Woodleygate article, career hasn't been the same since, lol!
fettastic - 7/25/2013, 12:48 PM
If you were Shailene and just found out all your scenes were getting cut from the film....what would your FIRST [frick]ING QUESTION be?

And yet nobody has an answer to that question? And everyone's just playing it off like "Um, gee, ooh, ahh.....I don't know, things can change."

Meanwhile Webb and Sony are happy to give out release dates for the next century for this franchise and have made plain they have big plans for the series.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 7/25/2013, 12:48 PM
Filming her scenes, cutting her out the film, recasting her = epic fail
SuperbatSpider1003 - 7/25/2013, 12:49 PM
But in the comics MJ helped peter mourn and that was a pivotal moment for her character
LFANCH - 7/25/2013, 12:52 PM
We all know whose really at fault for her being fired. It's Ror and his article calling her ugly. ;)
TheMexicanSuperman - 7/25/2013, 12:53 PM
I hope she is still MJ in the future installments.
HavocPrime - 7/25/2013, 12:57 PM
And cue all the haters who called her ugly and not hot, it's a shame that she might not return.
CherryBomb - 7/25/2013, 12:58 PM
Wait didn't she film Divergence first? She was a kinda late casting with Spider-Man wasn't she ?
CherryBomb - 7/25/2013, 12:59 PM
Instead we're gonna get a bimbo hot girl who can't act like the Fanboys want or someone who looks older than Andrew Garfield a la Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Sephit - 7/25/2013, 1:01 PM
@TayDee Sure MJ was in the picture right away in the comics but in a movie it will feel too quick to have MJ come into the picture unless Gwen is killed off early on in the film and then MJ comes as a friend to help him through the grieving process. I would rather they have MJ be a big surprise like they did in the comics. Aunt May fixes Peter up on a blind date in the 3rd film and he doesn't want to go until she shows up at his doorstep looking super hot. "Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot"
Although that could work as a cool after credits scene.
CherryBomb - 7/25/2013, 1:03 PM
Big mistake if they don't bring her back. Shailene is generating a lot I buzz with Divergent and her role in Descendants. She's a really really talented pretty girl who is perfect for MJ plus she actually looks like a teenager. Shame on you Sony.
Highflyer - 7/25/2013, 1:05 PM
I ave to admit that Levi has a very versatile personality #just sayin
Ranger14 - 7/25/2013, 1:09 PM
Garfield is 30 now and definitely doesn't look like a teenager. That's why they cast a bunch of 28 year old s around him as high schoolers. I don't think anyone wants to cast a hot bimbo who who can't act. Why not cast a hot girl who can act? The "have to compromise one for the other" mentality here just befuddles me.
thewonderer - 7/25/2013, 1:12 PM
Marc Webb is like a fat Stephen Amell.
SnapperCarr - 7/25/2013, 1:14 PM
Hopefully this doesn't make her feel bad about herself.
exe - 7/25/2013, 1:17 PM
Am I the only one who finds Woodley hot?
FOOM - 7/25/2013, 1:18 PM
Further proof that Webb doesn't know his arse from his testicles.

FOOM - 7/25/2013, 1:20 PM
@exe

yes. yes you are.

CherryBomb - 7/25/2013, 1:22 PM
@ranger. But Shailene is hot that's what I don't understand. She's the perfect "girl next door " idiot fanboys are going crazy because god forbid women look different without make-up I find it astonishing and really distasteful.
Ranger14 - 7/25/2013, 1:22 PM
"Am I the only one who finds Woodley hot?"

No, but I think you are in the minority here. :-p
TayDee - 7/25/2013, 1:22 PM
@Sephit

It's too late for them to make MJ a surprise. In the comics, Liz & Gwen were already liking Peter, and teased her for the longest, now it's too late for that since she's already close to dying. Now they can try to have his Aunt set him up with MJ and he keeps denying, I'd be for that. And the classic MJ line will sound cheesy in film.
subzero1077 - 7/25/2013, 1:23 PM
How about bringing back Raimi, cuz Marc Webb sucks!
ProfOJ - 7/25/2013, 1:24 PM
There's going to be so many freakin bad guys in it by that point they probably wont have time for love scenes.....that dudes already complaining anyway, who knows who will even be spidy by then...when mcguire bit@hed about it they had gillenhaul ( spelled horribly wrong) all ready to go....so who knows!
Ranger14 - 7/25/2013, 1:25 PM
Cherrybomb@ I can't speak for all guys but I have been around for plenty of years and "girl next door" doesn't equate to "hot" for most guys I know. I don't find her hot. I don't know what is distasteful about women being naturally attractive without makeup. I find it distasteful when women have to cake on the makeup to look good. To each their own.
Ocelot - 7/25/2013, 1:37 PM
revloveR - 7/25/2013, 1:45 PM
i don't, no. is what he meant to say. a pity though really.
CherryBomb - 7/25/2013, 1:56 PM
@ranger for women to look as good as they do with make-up, without it is a very hard thing, a minority believe me. You think all these women you guys adore actually look the same without make up? Hell no. Mila Kunis is an international sex symbol yet looks entirely different without make up. If guys are looking for "natural beauty" then they'll be looking along time, women need to be accepted for how they look with and without make up. You can even tell on her red carpet photos that Shailene doesn't even wear mug make up.
Jollem - 7/25/2013, 2:02 PM
webb got skills
Ranger14 - 7/25/2013, 2:06 PM
Sorry, Cherry, but I have been around 50 years and have met plenty of women who look good all natural. Perhaps I have been blessed to be in relationships with plenty who do. I also worked in the modeling and talent industry for a number of years when I was younger and plenty of our talent (not all...there's plenty that didn't) looked good prior to getting their makeup on. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder anyway, so this is a topic we will clearly never agree on. You think Shailene is hot and I don't. To each their own.
