By now, everyone knows that Shailene Woodley's brief cameo has been cut from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." However, when asked whether Woodley would return as Mary Jane Watson in "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" director Marc Webb stated, "I don't know, she has a lot on her plate. We haven't really crossed that bridge yet." An interesting answer as Woodley was originally signed up for a multi-picture deal, so if Sony truly wanted her to return there should really be little issue. It was previously reported that Sony would highlight Woodley's scheduling conflicts due to her lead in "Divergent" as the reason that the actress was unavailable to return to the role of Mary Jane and use that as the reason for a recast. But remember, Woodley signed up for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" first, so Sony's contract should theoretically trump whatever was negotiated with Summit/Lionsgate.
Previously, Webb issued the following statement when news of Woodley's removal became public. "I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."
