Bob Iger On Marvel Netflix Deal, Says One More Show In Development At ABC Bob Iger On Marvel Netflix Deal, Says One More Show In Development At ABC

Disney top executive Bob Iger weighs in on the Marvel/Netflix deal for Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and The Defenders original series. Says another Marvel show is in development for ABC.

ABC Punisher Blade Ghost Rider tv series

Bob Iger on the overall deal with Netflix.
"This is a really smart deal we think, for Netflix because they've done well already with some investments in original programming. And turning to branded programming is a smart and big step for them and Marvel certainly provides that. This gives us an opportunity to create and own four new series that Netflix will have exclusivity [on] for a period of time, starting in 2016, when the series are made available to them...These will be well-produced series that will take production investment to deliver the type of quality that we promised to Netflix."

Why Disney went with Netflix when they're a part owner of Hulu.
"We actually talked about making these series available to others. And there was quite a bit of interest for these properties in the marketplace. The answer is yes, we will as a company, create more original programming for platforms that are not ours. We have some great networks with ABC, ABC Family, The Disney Channel, not to mention ESPN and Life but they're not going to buy original, scripted programming for a while. But we can sell just so much programming from Marvel, we've got a good show in S.H.I.E.L.D. and another one being developed for ABC- more plans on our Disney channel with Marvel, but this seemed to be a great opportunity and I think there will be other opportunities on other platforms to do some more things."

With the Clark Gregg centered Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already airing and Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones destined for Netflix - who does that leave for another ABC show? Guillermo del Toro's Hulk tv show is dead per Head of Television Jeph Loeb as Marvel Studios wants to keep the Jade Giant in cinema land. Three more options are recently returned properties to the "House of Ideas", Blade, Punisher and Ghost Rider (none have films in the works) - could they be in development at ABC? Or perhaps Iger is referring to that Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) period drama also rumored to be on the horizon year? Then there's also Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan, who already stars on ABC's Once Upton A Time - could a Winter Soldier spinoff show be in development?

One things for sure, now is a great time to be a comic book fan that enjoys television. Marvel has S.H.I.E.L.D.,Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, AKA Jessica Jones, The Defenders and a mystery ABC project. DC Comics has Arrow, Flash, Constantine, iZombie, Hourman, Avenger, Gotham Central and Amazon(?). And of course, we can't forget about the juggernaut that's AMC's The Walking Dead! If the "expert" predictions of a decline in superhero cinema were really about a surge in superhero tv shows then I guess they were correct.

So wait, every time DC announces a show, so does Marvel?

DC has, Arrow, Gotham PD, iZombie, Flash and another I can't think of right now.

Marvel has AoS, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, AKA Jessica Jones and this other one.

Speculation time I guess.

I just watched the interview and I think you are misquoting him. He said: "we've got a good show in S.H.I.E.L.D., another one being developed for ABC.."

not "we've got a good show in S.H.I.E.L.D. AND another one being developed for ABC.."

That Minnie Mouse in the back just gives me a bad feeling...lol

Please treat these shows as they should be Marvel. These shows are on Netflix for crying out loud. So pleaseee leave the kiddie stuff outside the door.

They should do a Marvel Knights for Netflix, showing a weathered Johnny Blaze on the run as Ghost Rider, Frank Castle as the Punisher, an assassin towards bad guys, Daredevil a successful vigilante crime fighter in Hell's Kitchen, Blade a hunter of the supernatural who is combatting the secret vampire plague threatening New York's underground, and finally Moon Knight, a vigilante ex-marine with a multiprocessor personality disorder and a strong faith in the Egyption moon goddess for whom he fights.

I would loooove a mature Punisher TV show. I'm still not too excited about these shows though. Just because Marvel movies are good doesn't mean Marvel TV is guaranteed to be good. Aside from whiners on this site, most people enjoy Agents of SHIELD but that's all Joss Whedon's credit, not really Marvels. Only Marvel live-action show we've had this century besides AoS is the 'meh' Blade series. I'm not saying it's going to be awful, I just don't think it's guaranteed to be good either.

Netflix has over 30M subscribers, Hulu Plus only has 3M. Kind of a no-brainer there.

Theyre probably going to make a movie with Dr Strange rather than a series, according to feige

Ok, so... Since these are Exclusive to Netflix, in my mind that means we're in the same boat where Marvel won't be able to use these characters in other media/shows/movies. SO, I'm thinking these shows will not be interconnected with the current MCU. no?

Cool another shitty marvel show on ABC that will get cancelled... The boom is coming for AOS any day now.

@SmokenOaken:
They'll still be part of the MCU. Marvel and ABC are still producing the shows, Netflix is just the exclusive distributor.

@ Franshu & jlabatman: I'd like for them to do a Doctor Strange movie then spin off a Cloak& Dagger series. Just my thoughts.

@SuperJoe, cry some more toolbox.

I suspect that any show in development for Marvel on ABC will be contingent on the ratings for AoS. If AoS bombs out, I would bet the other show gets shelved or better yet, farmed out to a cable network.

Mavel is dropping nothing but gold today.

For the the people that keep bitching about AOS then don't watch it its that simple, I for one like the show, and its a tv show about comic book characters and I'm gong to support it just like I do with Arrow. So quit you bitching and just ignore the article if you don't like the way Marvel deals with their properties.
