Kinberg is in great demand these days. He's shepherding a shared comic book movie universe for Fox, re-writing the Fantastic Four script for Josh Trank, expanding the Star Wars universe with J.J. Abrams and now developing a film franchise based on Hasbro card game, Magic: The Gathering. President of Hasbro Studios Stephen Davis, CEO Brian Goldner and Wizards of the Coast CEO Greg Leeds will serve as executive producers. Aditya Sood and Josh Feldman, executives at Kinberg's Genre Films will also executive produce. Fox is said to be looking to match the breadth and scope of Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings sagas for their own sword and sorcery franchise.

Nothing like waiting 20 years after something peaked to make a Hollywood movie based on it.

Well, number 1: forget about those cool costumes. Goth wear for everyone. This movie will be dead on arrival.

I used to use the cards for inspiration for my drawings... Don't know of how it'd fare as a movie though.. Time will tell

Such a rubbish game. Does anybody REALLY want to see a movie, besides the neck-bearded basement dwellers?

I really don't know what this is going to be like. They could go anywhere with it. They'll probably put a set of Planeswalkers front and center.

Just do a five chick squad and make a fantasy t&a movie. :D Chandra, Nissa, Liliana, (hmmm, detecting a pattern here) Tamiyo and Elspeth wrecking faces.

But I'm not so sure they're willing to hand over the current figureheads of the franchise so I'm afraid we're going to be stuck with new characters. The comics are pretty bad too so that does not bode well.

Maybe they'll go classic and do the Brother's War. Giant war machines loaded with magical energies destroying an entire world... Might take more than one movie though.

I'd love to see a movie where the bad guy wins and then you see a dragon flapping by in the distance, hear a hollow laugh and then it blinks out of existence.

tricklove187:
Just like comic books then? :)

I never played the game, but I believe there's supposed to be some kind of ongoing storyline throughout the different expansions/editions/whatever.

There are (were?) also novels based on Magic. Only remember the trilogy about the druid Greensleeves and her brother. Those were unspectacular, but decent fantasy books. I liked them.

I want more high budget fantasy movies, but neither this nor the WarCraft movie are really what I'd hope for. Still I'll give them a chance - if they're entertaining I'm happy, if they're bad it's no big deal (unlike Desolation of Smaug).

@Luminus:
Fair enough, but because you opened with that goth remark you put yourself up as a hater of the game. One of those types that starts shouting at people that they should stop doing what they enjoy.

But yeah, it could end up hilariously bad. In that case we can start making drinking games. Like that Dungeons & Dragons movie. Remember that? The hype for that was through the roof in some circles.

@jj2112:
Battleship made money didn't it? I hope they do better than that though. And poker is already the topic of a boat load of movies.

This sounds interesting. Why so many haters? I'm no magic player, but it is obviously a world that could be translated to the big screen with ease. Isn't there a ton of books and some comics that tell stories set in this world? Granted, I haven't read them; it just seems like, if done correctly, a movie series could be awesome.

Some of my friends love Magic. I only played it once when I was in elementary school.

I wonder what they'll think about this...

I love M:TG, and there are a ton of back stories for them to use - and they all SUCK. This will be terrible.

And I'm saying it will be Brother's War filtered through GoT in the worse possible way.

Seriously, guys? Geeks on this sight, of all people, should know how big MTG is. There's a large Magic group at my college and at the grocery store I work at (still a college kid scrapping cash out of the bottom of the barrel). There's not a lot of story...but that should be a good thing, right? That gives them more creative freedom, because they don't have to slave away at making a story that perfectly matches what fans want.

I mean, we've seen countless comic book adaptations, but a trading card game is just too much? Makes more sense than a Battleship movie.
ArtisticErotic
ArtisticErotic - 1/14/2014, 9:27 AM
So this will be the next big trend in Hollywood making movies based off popular card games and fantasy material. I'll support them IF DONE RIGHT. Knowing fox it will done wrong.

You guys realize there are Magic books, online stories, minor fiction in the card packs and on the cards themselves, right? Magic has a pretty damn big story, actually. Each set that comes out has a separate story with continuing characters like all of those pictured above and new ones. Just check this page and read a summary of the stories that exist for the Onslaught set.
