Jada Pinkett-Smith Talks GOTHAM, Reveals SpoilerActress Jada Pinkett-Smith was recently confirmed to star as the lead villain on Fox's Gotham, a prequel to the Batman mythology that focuses on a young cop named Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and an adolescent Bruce Wayne (not yet cast), recently bereft of his parents. Here's Jada's post:

To my Facebook family

Last night, I decided to accept the role of Fish Mooney, who is the sadistic villain in the upcoming Batman prequel, Gotham, for Fox TV. I’ve committed to a year to work alongside a very talented cast, a super cool, creative and talented head writer and an extraordinary director. This one…is going to be funnnnnn!

Stay tuned:)

J

The key piece of information here is that Pinkett-Smith is only committed to the show for a year, meaning it's likely that her character won't stay the top gangster in Gotham past the first season. Maybe Fish Mooney doesn't even stay alive past the first season? That would make a bit of sense actually, as we're reportedly going to see very young versions of the Riddler and Joker and the Penguin is confirmed to appear, as played by Robin Lord Taylor.

There was someone in Arkham Origins named Tracey or Candy or something. One of Penguins assistants. She looks like she could be someone like that
MrReese - 2/21/2014, 5:18 AM
A young Joker? Idk bout that.
Dildonis - 2/21/2014, 5:19 AM
Wouldnt it make more sense that they are perhaps waiting to see if they are getting picked up for a second season?
nikgrid - 2/21/2014, 5:20 AM
Good! I thoroughly dislike Jada Pinkett smith, and her whole brood.
4thDoctor - 2/21/2014, 5:24 AM
I am confused on the whole "spoiler" idea. It's not a spoiler, it is mere speculation based on a comment that could simply be related to how the industry works.
Dildonis - 2/21/2014, 5:24 AM
@nikgrid

What, you dont like her philosopher of a son? Or her Marlon Brando like Husband?

4thDoctor - 2/21/2014, 5:28 AM
They are also playing it up like we are all supposed to know who Fish Mooney is.
loki668 - 2/21/2014, 5:29 AM
I'm just hoping that "Fish" is a nickname or else I'm pretty sure that she murdered her parents first.
MetahumanAbominationKlone - 2/21/2014, 5:30 AM
Basically they are Smallville-ing Batman? ...Yaaay.....................
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 5:31 AM
I can't help but hope this gets cancelled. Sure, it's got a talented cast, but the whole Smallville 2.0 shit is a load of bollocks!
loki668 - 2/21/2014, 5:34 AM
The idea of "Young Joker" DOES give me the heebie-jeebies, though. I'm hoping that this is NOT a "Smallville" for Batman as that would be terrible. Getting a handle on what this show is going to be is pretty hard, though. Procedural cop-drama? Semi Super-Hero show? I need to know more before I feel better/worry.
capcyclopsftw - 2/21/2014, 5:35 AM
Not a spoiler. Attention grabbing headlines. Ugh.
TelaVizion - 2/21/2014, 5:35 AM
Can't wait to see all the hate this show will get for not having any big time real characters in it.
Jimmyquickfingers - 2/21/2014, 5:35 AM
Just no
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 5:36 AM
The Joker's past shouldn't be explored. Some things are just left best a mystery.
TheBaroness89 - 2/21/2014, 5:39 AM
Fish...as a girl I can safely say that would not be my nickname...whether as a gangster or stripper or hooker...fish bad. Might as well call her henchwomen pink taco and clam chowder
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 5:41 AM
@MAC

They are Smallville-ing Batman, but they're doing it without Batman and with Gordon instead. So, you're going to get a young Gordon go up against Batman villains, meaning that the city won't need a Batman anyway.

I think people tend to forget that even though Gordon had good intentions, he was doing a poor job of cleaning up the city before Batman. Why would Gotham need a Batman if Gordon can take down the villains himself. Oh, that's right, it wouldn't.

Warner Bros and Fox (wow, it had to be those two) are trying to cash in on the Batman name with this unoriginal concept.
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 5:41 AM
I remember the last TV Show set in Gotham without Batman. Haha, that pile of shit didn't make it past the first season.
QuestiontheAnswer - 2/21/2014, 5:41 AM
This isn't Smallville-esque at all. Smallville was about Superman's rise to becoming a superhero and Gotham is going to be about a detective who would later become an ally of a superhero.
johnblake - 2/21/2014, 5:42 AM
I THINK THIS SHOW IS STUPID. WE ALREADY HAD THE PERFECT BATMAN ORIGIN. ITS CALLED BATMAN BEGINS. SHOULDVE MAD A SHAZAAM SHOW
Tetrahedron - 2/21/2014, 5:47 AM
Don't be a [frick]ing moron. Do you think when Tom Welling was cast in Smallville he signed a 10 year contract. IT'S CALLED CONTRACT RENEGOTIATIONS YOU DIPSHIT!
MisterPL - 2/21/2014, 5:48 AM
@ Batmaniac

They're not going to spend years proving Batman isn't needed in Gotham. Quite the opposite. They'll spend years building up to the point that a police commissioner decides he could use some help outside of the law in the form of a masked vigilante. This show will lay the foundation for the relationship between Gordon and Batman, between Gotham and its Dark Knight.

Unless, of course, you're insisting on being a Negative Nancy in which case, yeah, THEY'RE DOING IT ALL WRONG!!! WAAAHH!!!
loki668 - 2/21/2014, 5:48 AM
@TheBaroness89

LMAO!! Yeah. It would have been pretty funny (though AMAZINGLY sexist) if they introduced her as "Sausage-Wallet" Mooney.
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 5:49 AM
A young Joker?

BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 5:50 AM
"They'll spend years building up to the point that a police commissioner decides he could use some help outside of the law in the form of a masked vigilante."

Gordon doesn't enlist Batman though. Batman ENLISTS Gordon's help, so that concept is already shady and [frick]ed up, and that's why this show will be trash!
ProfessorX - 2/21/2014, 5:51 AM
"The key piece of information here is that Pinkett-Smith is only committed to the show for a year, meaning it's likely that her character won't stay the top gangster in Gotham past the first season."

Wut? No, it just means she signed a 12 month contract... which may or may not be renewed later...
Growler - 2/21/2014, 5:55 AM
The simple reason for the one-year contract is that the show has yet to be made and aired and could well fail, so a contract beyond one season could end up being pointless.
MercwithMouth - 2/21/2014, 6:02 AM
This show looks very bad. Pinkett-Smith is a terrible actress. She should stick to being a metal band frontwoman. Constantine should be great, but it seems WB is overloading themselves.
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 6:06 AM
If this was a show about the GCPD fighting organized crime in Gotham, I'd be all up for it, but it's not and you can tell it's not from all the Batman villain AND Batman name drops.

I mean from the get go it's been Gordon will investigate the murder of BATMAN's parents and Gordon will deal with younger BATMAN villains. Instead of them looking for people to play Sal Maroni, Carmine Falcone, Rupert Thorne, they're more interested in a young Joker, a young Ridddler and a young Penguin. Why? Because they're trying to cash in on everything Batman without using Batman.
jimoakley666 - 2/21/2014, 6:16 AM
I'm finding it very hard to get excited about this series.
AlibiBreakfast - 2/21/2014, 6:21 AM
I have a feeling this will horribly suck like Agents of Shield, and largely for the same reason: people just don't care about the background characters (Sure, AoS has terrible writing, too). General audiences don't go see a Batman movie for the side characters like Harvey Bullock or Luscious Fox-- they go to see Batman being Batman.

If the concepts and plots behind these type of shows were interesting enough to stand on their own, rather than just being naked and generic attempts by corporate parents to cash in, they wouldn't need to piggyback off the good will already felt toward their comic properties by hiding the shows behind their second-tier or largely unknown characters.
TimL - 2/21/2014, 6:27 AM
She is only commited for 1 year because they usually NEVER have contracts going past the first season before airing the pilot? They first wait and see if they get picked up again.
MisterPL - 2/21/2014, 6:28 AM
@ Batmaniac

"Gordon doesn't enlist Batman though. Batman ENLISTS Gordon's help, so that concept is already shady and [frick]ed up, and that's why this show will be trash!"

I never said he'd actively enlist Batman. I'm just suggesting that showing Gordon struggling with Gotham's criminals – and their escalating behavior – is a smart way to illustrate why the city's top cop will be okay teaming up with a vigilante.

But if your Magic 8 Ball™ says otherwise, who are we to disagree? We'll both watch it anyway.
rabid - 2/21/2014, 6:35 AM
I have no doubt that "Fish" will become food for the "Penguin".
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 6:41 AM
"I'm just suggesting that showing Gordon struggling with Gotham's criminals – and their escalating behavior – is a smart way to illustrate why the city's top cop will be okay teaming up with a vigilante."

They seem more interested with Batman villains in their younger years than active criminals in Gotham, like Carmine Falcone or Rupert Thorne. Now, as I said, if Gordon can take down Batman villains without Batman, Gotham doesn't need a Batman. If he doesn't stop them, it's just going to be a show about an incompetent cop.
GliderMan - 2/21/2014, 6:42 AM
[frick] this waste of a show.
Godzillafart - 2/21/2014, 6:46 AM
Oooooooo! Can't wait to see what high school teams Joker is part of! Glee club, perhaps?
BustASpideyPose - 2/21/2014, 6:47 AM
Since when is Jada Pinkeet Smith terrible? Some of you guys really let a actor/actress life cloud your judgment on acting.

F*ck this show regardless.
