According to Nikki Finke, former big cheese at Deadline, Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron ("Children of Men"), who recently won an Oscar for directing Garvity, is in talks to helm the Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Cuaron has been highly praised for elevating the magical franchise with the third film in franchise, Prisoner of Azkaban, which he directed. Last year, Cuaron was asked about the possibility of returning to the Harry Potter universe. "Akzaban was fun to make, and when I did it, I was invited to do the next one, but I didn't want to overstay the welcome, because it was such an experience," the director said. "But now? Why not? I do have stuff that I want to do [next], but a J.K. thing ..."

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will be an original story and will mark Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is planned as the first picture in a new film series. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans. “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

Mrcool210 - 5/19/2014, 9:49 AM
Not bad, although my favorite director in the harry potter universe is David Yates this guy did still make one of the better potter films. Yates is probably exhausted from harry potter so this guy is the next best option. If he is chosen good job WB

EdgyOutsider - 5/19/2014, 9:49 AM
[frick]!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gravity was horrific, Children of Men sucked. His only good film was Prisoner of Azkaban and that is the weakest film in the entire franchise. [frick]ing hate this guy. Outside of POA, his films are boring and pale. He takes interesting concepts and runs them into the ground in a ball of fire. [frick]!
Starfox - 5/19/2014, 9:51 AM
Yes Gravity was an Incredibly Overrated Film.
ALegendaryPanda - 5/19/2014, 9:51 AM
Awesome! I love this guy as a director.

I hope he "Refurns" :P
thewonderer - 5/19/2014, 9:53 AM
Gravity was overrated.

But Children of Men is one of the best films ever made and I feel sorry if you don't see that.
BlackIceJoe - 5/19/2014, 9:54 AM
Well I liked the book Prisoner of Azkaban and I did enjoy the movie. So I think this is good news. But Gravity I wasn't really a fan of it. It felt like I was on a roller coaster more of a ride then a movie. Plus it was fake because there would have been no way to get to the other space stations.
Sumitsjc - 5/19/2014, 9:54 AM
'REFURN'?

Prisoner of Azkaban is my most favorite in series.
Unreal2k9 - 5/19/2014, 9:55 AM
Great! I'm surprised some people are upset by this rumor. Azkaban is my favorite HP film by far, although, so is the book. It's tough to argue that he's a "bad" choice.
AxeEffect - 5/19/2014, 9:55 AM
please don't change "refurn" nail, I like it a lot :P
MrMartinMarvel - 5/19/2014, 9:56 AM

Yes please!!!
Interestein - 5/19/2014, 10:01 AM
Azkaban is IMO the best HP film, and Children of Men was amazing, so I'm all for this.
Desrow - 5/19/2014, 10:01 AM
"Children of Men sucked"

QuestiontheAnswer - 5/19/2014, 10:02 AM
And then Gravity. . .
TheRationalNerd - 5/19/2014, 10:03 AM
Gravity was great visually but story wise "especially the ending" I felt like it was a cop out.
ReeferInferno - 5/19/2014, 10:04 AM
I'd love for him to refurn, one of the better directors of the HP franchise.
ALegendaryPanda - 5/19/2014, 10:04 AM
SCREENSHOT! Lol
TheRationalNerd - 5/19/2014, 10:04 AM
I'd rather see this director help work with the next Green Lantern film/reboot.
remembertheking - 5/19/2014, 10:08 AM
YESSSS!!! I HOPE SO. HP POA was my fav of the films. it was done so well. I also like that book the most so maybe biased but hell its ALFONSO CUARON. BEST DIRECTOR!!
MrMartinMarvel - 5/19/2014, 10:08 AM
@ALegendaryPanda
Well done.

MrMartinMarvel - 5/19/2014, 10:09 AM
Anyway, where the [frick] is that new Guardians trailer? The wait is killing me!
yossarian - 5/19/2014, 10:10 AM
I've never seen a HP movie.
Tuuralihn - 5/19/2014, 10:16 AM
Noooo not him. He [frick]ed up the beautiful style that HP had going for it. He made it super gritty and depressing as shit. Please not him!
JatevinM - 5/19/2014, 10:30 AM
Tuuralihn@ You clearly never read a Harry Potter book then because from The Chamber of Secrets on the books get dark, gritty, and sad.
charlie2094 - 5/19/2014, 10:40 AM
Be cool to see, be one way of getting me excited for more "Potter" films...

Fantastic director, and as great as Gravity was, Children of Men remains one of my favorite films to this today side by side with Blade Runner
Robe - 5/19/2014, 11:13 AM
POA was commercially the lowest grossing Harry Potter movie, despite being based on one of the best books. Dull, dark, colourless and depressing with plot points in the screenplay cut to make room for arty bits. He turned Dumbledore into a dirty hippy and the students into Chavs.
PunkRockJesus - 5/19/2014, 11:26 AM
needles94 - 5/19/2014, 11:27 AM
best HP director by far! his style was the most fitting of any of the films. this would be great!
PhilipG - 5/19/2014, 11:29 AM
Smart and wise WB's....Great move.
pickleweasel2 - 5/19/2014, 11:38 AM
Children of Men sucked he said, HA!deadbanana
BlueKnight - 5/19/2014, 11:57 AM
PoA was the best of the HP series and Gravity was one of the best movies of 2013 so I'm happy he is returning to the HP universe, I'd love to see him direct a DC movie, maybe Batman or Flash.
teinen - 5/19/2014, 12:16 PM
Gravity was not overrated, you must have all watched a cam screener and not in IMAX. Best director in the game, you guys are overrated.
MrNiklander - 5/19/2014, 12:42 PM
I liked Prisoner Of Azkaban so I am in
DurtyTalynt - 5/19/2014, 1:53 PM
