"There's nothing scifi about this movie. It's very grounded, very realistic." - Gareth Edwards

Shocktillyoudrop.com and Firstshowing.net are live blogging from Hall H and they have descriptions for the new Godzilla footage. What's important is that director Gareth Edwards stressed that the film would be take itself quite seriously. It was also implied that the teaser won't be put online for quite some time. Bummer!

Silas Lesnick: The footage pans across a city that has been utterly destroyed. We hear a voice over a radio talking about the end of the world. It looks like another giant creature's body is in the wreckage. We hear the classic Godzilla scream. From the smoke, we see something enormous. We're following a camera up Godzilla's back, showing his scales. We see his face, but it's almost a silhouette. It looks a LOT like the classic Godzilla design but with a slightly fatter face.

The narration is from Robert Oppenheimer. "We knew the world would not be the same. Few people laughed. Few people cried. Most were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture. The Bhagavad-Git... takes on his multi-armed form" (This is were we see the other, dead creature)

"And says, 'I am become death. Destroyer of worlds." That's where we see Godzilla's face and the logo

That's the narration in the trailer. It's a Robert Oppenheimer quote about the atomic bomb.

Firstshowing.net Description:
3:10PM - "We just wanted to make a kick ass Godzilla movie..." They unveiled a surprise Godzilla teaser and it looks kind of awesome. Epicly destroyed city, buildings smashed through, shows a curled up Godzilla, and he gets and roars. Crowd goes wild. I'm actually impressed, looks kick ass. "The destroyer of worlds."

3:13PM - "We could talk about it or just see the footage again..." Of course, the crowd cheers and they show it again. Looks just as amazing a second time, gives me chills, looks fantastic and it's barely just a tease with silhouettes of the beasts and a roar.

...................................................................

We see huge black clouds, massive smoke, and slowly it clears away revealing a ruined city. There are hundreds of crashed cars and rubble — buildings are broken in half and people are crawling over the sideways ruins of buildings. Some buildings have had massive chunks torn out of the middle of them, like when a cartoon character runs through a wall.

We see the side of something huge, like a mountain. We only slowly realize it's actually a monster. There is something like lava running down the side of it. And then there are huge CLAWS. The monnster is laying on its side. There is a huge Godzilla scream! Like a massive trumpet sounding!

And then Godzilla is rampaging through the city, trashing buildings with its huge claw. Buildings collapse. THOOM. A giant arm swipes across the city and everything crashes. We see its massive spiky back and then the trademark face. The monster opens its mouth and SCREAMS. - io9.com

The film will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters) based on a script by David Goyer that Max Borenstein has rewritten.

does anybody know why they just don't go ahead and post these comic-con teaser trailers online? seems kinda game-playing dick-ish to say, "well you guys were able to come so [frick] everyone else."
DZ123 - 7/14/2012, 3:56 PM
Um, mentioning Robert Oppenheimer is truly missing the point of Godzilla.
AlexDeLarge87 - 7/14/2012, 3:57 PM
EPIC!:)

Hope it ends up fighting with other monstrous creature.

Hopefully not as bad as the japanese godzilla's since they were pretty bad. Always love the american godzilla even if it was a bit tame. Not sure if a 'fat' godzilla is a good idea. I'm not sure about the iconic godzilla but only if it fits right.
Bigred20 - 7/14/2012, 4:03 PM

Though oppenheimer was instrumental as one of the creators of the atomic bomb, his quote is him basically saying "what have i done, what horror have we unleashed"...sounds perfect for a godzilla film to me.
ClarkWilson91 - 7/14/2012, 4:21 PM
I loved the look of the last one not the movie, kinda sucked, but the look.

I love Godzilla, and I can't wait to see more on this, but...

"There's nothing scifi about this movie. It's very grounded, very realistic."

This line is stupid. I am officially sick and tired of hearing and reading this [frick]ing line about upcoming films. There is little in the way of 'grounding' in regards to a gigantic lizard that spits atomic energy and fights other monsters. The only realism involved MAY come from the average person's reactions upon seeing said gigantic atomic lizard. Give me a revamped 'Destroy all Monsters' with today's tech and get the hell out of the way!
DEADP0000L - 7/14/2012, 6:10 PM
oh shit its Godzilla !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AnonymousGuy - 7/14/2012, 6:25 PM
like that there's the oppenheimer quote. means the filmmakers really know what they're doing and did their homework. part of what made godzilla so scary to the japanese when he debuted was that hiroshima and nagasaki were still really fresh in their minds.
ATrueHero1987 - 7/14/2012, 6:56 PM
How the [frick] can you make a film about a mutated dinosaur "grounded" & "realistic"??smh Anyway, YES to a new film about the King of The Monsters!!
antonio - 7/14/2012, 6:59 PM
So excited!!!!

Winning!

This con is probably the best one so far but we'll see next year
KeithM - 7/14/2012, 9:14 PM
By making it realistically of course. Some of you have no imagination.

beane2099 - 7/14/2012, 9:21 PM
How is using Oppenheimer "missing the point of Godzilla?" It actually hits the nail on the damn head.
DZ123 - 7/14/2012, 9:46 PM
beane: He created the bomb for what he deemed to be a necessary instrument of war. Godzilla's theme has always been about the cessation of war. Not to mention the whole unease of dependance on nuclear energy in society. By incorporating Oppenheimer, it's downplaying the Japanese perspective on the bomb.
Brady1138 - 7/14/2012, 9:55 PM
I want to be in San Diego SOOOOOO bad!
Brady1138 - 7/14/2012, 9:57 PM
Also since they referenced the man with multiple "arms" while showing the dead monster, I'm betting it might be King Ghidorah.
Darkhaven - 7/14/2012, 10:05 PM
@KeithM - 7/14/2012, 9:14 PM

"By making it realistically of course. Some of you have no imagination."

So, elaborate for some of us. Other than the ways I pointed out above, what did you have in mind? Because the last time a 'realistic' take on Godzilla came about, Matthew Broderick was in it.

Long story short: "grounded in realism" is a term that's been thrown around since Batman's revamping, and now it's used the same way "in 3D and IMAX" are used: to appeal to certain people. Every ounce of Godzilla is fantasy; to weaken that bond is to weaken the creation. Do not allow Godzilla '98 to happen again!
antonio - 7/14/2012, 10:38 PM
Yeah, when Edwards means "there is nothing Sci-Fi about this movie", he means that what if this actually happened? How people should deal something this destructive.
Frankie312 - 7/14/2012, 11:00 PM
Hell yea i hope they pull this off good im a huge godzilla fan!
KeithM - 7/14/2012, 11:55 PM
The Realistic Pickers: You're either being deliberately obtuse or way too literal.

Lord of the Rings was made 'realistically'. Game of Thrones was written (and shot) 'realistically'. Chronicle was made 'realistically'

Most modern science fiction and a lot of fantasy fiction is written 'realistically' - not to be confused with 'realism' of course (although I suspect that's what many of you are - deliberately, Sheldon-like - doing?) - in that in all respects, the world, the people in it, their behaviour, the physics of that world and so on are treated as if real.

Alien concepts and beings can then enter that world and be treated 'realistically' without having to assume that everything we know is somehow suspended (like people splitting up to explore a haunted and possibly serial-killer inhabited house, or not questioning why a grown man would run around in tights and a mask).

Magic (myth, sci-fi, whatever) treated 'realistically' means that everything about it follows some kind of logic or rules that make them otherwise consistent with our reality - e.g. if they make things bigger, where does the extra mass come from? Things with mass can't reach or exceed the speed of light (not excluding wormholes and other 'get-arounds'), energy can't be created from nothing, only converted, etc.

In filmic terms, it's even simpler. Shoot it realistically. Act realistically. Light realistically.

What he means by 'nothing sci-fi about it' is that there will be nothing "sci-fi-y" i.e. camp as tits about it.

Seriously, some of you need to learn the art of inferring meaning from the written and/or spoken word, because some of you take everything so literally it borders on autistic. Unless you are autistic. In which case, fair enough.
KeithM - 7/15/2012, 12:21 AM
I can only think of maybe two films that approach superheroes from a 'realism' point of view - Super and Defendor (although both push it at times), although quite a few others have tried to do them 'realistically' - e.g. Nolan's Batman, Watchmen, etc. The difference being Batman couldn't really happen. It's still fantasy. Secret ninja organisations don't exist (not like that at least), most of his tech is pure post-Bondian fantasy and doesn't exist in the real world, he would fall out of the sky, not glide. But they try to approach it 'realistically'...

The clue is in the 'istic' part:

Definition of -ISTIC
: of, relating to, or characteristic of — often in adjectives corresponding to nouns in -ism or nouns in -ist [altruistic]

In other words 'realistic' means that something relates to or is characteristic of something real. But NOT necessarily real itself. A realistic dream can be one that felt real to you. A realistic Godzilla is one that looks, moves and behaves like real... You see now?

I couldn't teach for a living. I'd go postal.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 1:19 AM
@KeithM exactly. The tone of it will be more grounded, not the actual film. Seriously, A lot of people have really taken the word "realistic" out of context since 2005. I'm almost certain that's what Ishiro Honda intended with the 1954 classic.

He thought the original Gojira would be more effective if he could convince the audience it really happened/could happen.
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/15/2012, 2:10 AM
BRING IT [frick]ING ON BITCH. Godzilla will rule once more.
silverdog - 7/15/2012, 5:40 AM
"There's nothing scifi about this movie. It's very grounded, very realistic."

Godzilla facepalm...
beane2099 - 7/15/2012, 7:43 AM
@ DLZ123

I see what you're saying. True, the original point of Godzilla was to demonstrate the horror of nuclear war from the perspective of Japan. They even used footage of victims of the Nagasaki bombing in the first movie. But I always felt in that moment, Oppenheimer's words echoed certain lament at what he had helped to create. When he was talking, he was wiping away tears. That's why I feel it fits.
