PROMETHEUS VFX Breakdown

The Moving Picture Company (MPC) has uploaded a couple brilliant new videos that showcases the elaborate digital effects that they created for Ridley Scott's science-fiction film, Prometheus.

In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. When one side dispatches a team to a distant planet to terraform it for human colonization, the team discovers an indigenous race of bio-mechanoid killers. Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.



Prometheus, is directed by Ridley Scott and stars: Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, and Michael Fassbender. The film will be available on Blu-Ray and DVD October 9th.

The CG in this movie is SO good! I will not be surprised if it is nominated for an Oscar.

I'm not sure those deleted scenes actually add much. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Either version of those scenes feel valid to me.

For example, the theatrical version got across to me that the engineer saw David as an abomination without having an extended dialogue scene about it.

After seeing the axe fight at the end, I agree with Ridley that it seemed a little silly that she could actually injure him in a head-on battle. It maybe would have worked a bit better if, as in the first film, she snuck up on him. I acknowledge that as seen in theaters it feels slightly truncated but I think it was the best decision considering what he had to work with.

Although the CG version of the geologist was way cooler looking, it needed a lot of massaging because it was far from completed.

While watching this VFX reel I was kinda like "Wait....they didn't shoot that on an alien planet?" ;)

Particularly that snake. I mean, while it's in the helmet you subconciously know its CG because there's no other way to do it. But when they first see it there was no indication it was CG. It never occurred to me to question how they did it, I just bought into it. There simply were none of the usual telltales that give it away. CG creatures will havea detatched quality about them that takes them out of that environment, an unusual sheen or movement, etc. Foam latex looks stiff and robotic. Nope, it just looked completely real. Fantastic work.

Ha ha, yeah the engineer just had such a calm, serene and almost curious face when he slowly entered that room and the crazy bitch starts swingin' that axe!

I really saw it as Ridley trying to capture the magic of the first film's ending. The alien was just trying to sleep and the crazy bitch starts steam cooking him! but for some reason it just didn't gel correctly in Prometheus. It just made more narrative sense that he's ready to tear her apart as soon as he comes through that door when...what happens, happens.

Great movie. The haters can suck it, they're just mad they didn't enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Sucks to be them! lol

I don't have the dvd yet, but to those who do, are all those bonus scenes included in the movie now, like what they did for watchmen, or are they just in some deleted scenes section?

I finally saw it this past weekend. I have to admit I was a little disappointed.

It just seemed that the story had no structure. Just seemed like an excuse to have a movie where by the end, everyone dies but one person. It would have been nice to see them break away from that predictable formula and tread some new territory.

Maybe I just overhyped it for myself.

For being such an amazing piece of shit, I have to admit, the fx and every scene in Prometheus was beautiful and fantastic.

I worked on the sandstorm sequence on this film - for the furthest shots we had to render about 9 miles, scale wise, of sand clouds (aprox 100/120 different passes, piled on top of each other). After A LOT of tweaking and optimising, we reached a render time of 32 hours a frame (first 'rough' attempt was 78) using ours and Framestore's render farm. That sequence was started first and finished last.

Prometheus was an AMAZING Film. I loved the story, Loved the Cinematography, loved the acting. Everything I was expecting from the creator of my 2 Favorite SciFi films. Ridley is THE best scifi film maker!

One of the best movies this year! The deleted scenes on bluray were amazing some of which could have been left in.

Prometheus was nothing more than a really pretty wedding cake with little filling.
It was the 'Lucas' effect in full swing.
I expected more from one of my favourite film makers and was left really, really disappointed not from the ambition of scope but the complete lack of common sense from the protaganists.
Saying that, I still love his design eye and hope any sequel to this will address some of the glaring problems of Prometheus.

Understand your opinion, but I would not go as far as comparing Ridley to Lucas just yet. 3 strikes, then you're out. Lucas never really dabbled in the various other genres of (whether good or bad)filmmaking that Scott did over the course of his definately more artistically productive film career.

Remember it states that members of the expedition were not all hired by the same person. Raif(?) Sprawl's character was more hell bent on fame(wanted a tv show more than validation: think auditioning for x-factor versus starting a band, playing shows & trying to make it in a more organic or real way). Not to bothered by the unknown extent of the meds from 2089 that Shaw kept pumping in her, nor the reanimated head or any of the other ridiculous complaints, I look forward to the sequel.

I'm no fan of Lost(pilot only for me) or Lindelof, but from the sound of it, some folks are carrying over their Lost finale beef to this film. I understand if what I here about that show is true, but we shouldn't let that get in the way of Ridley's great sensibility of using scenery and wardrobe to tell things about the characters that over simplified dialogue would just take away from. Sorry, one of the things I love about Scott and his work is that he tells it how he's going to tell it with no exceptions.

This was not meant to scorn any opposition of this film.., I just think it got a bad reputation to some for simply being over hyped. Please make Paradise soon Ridley! Think I'd rather see that over a dip back into the world of Bladerunner(probably my favourite film).
