Marc Webb Wants THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 To Tell More Of The Story Behind Peter's Parents

Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man lived up to it's tagline "The Untold Story" as the final cut of the film left out a huge portion of the story regarding his parent's sudden departure. Today, Webb stated that we'll see more of their story. Yippie?

While participating in a press event for The Amazing Spider-Man's DVD/Blu-ray release, Marc Webb was asked which characters in the Spider-Man universe that he is fond of.

"I like Electro. I'm fascinated by Norman Osborn and the different inflections of him. And Harry. Mary Jane and Gwen are always interesting to me."

No real surprises there, but no matter who or how many villains there are in the sequel Webb wants a villain that will challenge Peter on an emotional level, not just physical.

"What makes villains interesting to me is what they bring out in Peter. What challenges they provide for him. What's great about Marvel and other comics is that often there's a pre-existing relationship... It's not just about the physical conflict he has, but the emotional ones as well."

Early marketing and Marc Webb himself promoted The Amazing Spider-Man as a story that would tell the "untold" story of Peter's parents, but the final cut didn't feature much of that story at all. Seems like Webb will use the sequel to rectify that glaring absence.

"What's exciting about moving forward is that, in the first movie, I had to still honor some of the important elements of the origin story. But I also wanted to redefine the context of it because I'm building a different universe than what we've seen before. A lot of the nuance is quite different. Now, as we're approaching the sequel, it's really exciting because I feel quite liberated. I have a universe that's my own. I don't have an obligation to the origin story. It's pretty fun and exciting and I can dig deeper into the parents."

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film will be released on DVD and Blu-ray November 9th.

Hopefully this means he'll find the guy who killed Uncle Ben, they left out on that part of the story.

Whoopee......

Who cares. I just want to see the death of Gwen Stacy story, Goblin done right, Venom done right, and the Sinister Six. I could care less about anything else.

Short Translation:

Dear Marvel Studios,

After seeing The Avengers, we're really super sorry we didn't get in on the ground level on what you were proposing when you pitched us your expanded universe idea back in the late 90s. Please let us use Peter's parents as a tie to SHIELD as they are in the comics, so that we can get in on your awesomeness and make people think we're all in this together.

Please with sugar on top,

Sony.

P.S.: Pretty please Marvel Studios!!

Sony just being stupid again, there's alot of cuts in the movie, it could be better if they didn't skip the important parts of the movie, hope the sequel won't suck

I didn't think The Amazing Spider-Man was awful or anything, it was decent, but didn't touch Spider-Man 1 or 2 in my opinion.
Electro is iffy as the villain but I'll give the sequel a chance as there is no more ties to Raimi's version which kicked Webbs ass in the origin department.

I think they cut a lot cause they changed their minds on Ratha, originally he was gonna die and was a pivotal character so he had something that contributed to the story but was suppose to die. Ortiz and the other guy writing the sequel probably decided it would be best if they just kept Ratha till the sequel to reveal more about the parents. I wish Webb would write the movies like Nolan did.

What ever. I don't mind this series, I just look at it as a one shot story though. Perhaps Webb can finish up his take with 2 or 3, then let Marvel Studios have it.

So now it's going to be "Amazing Spider-man 2: The still untold story" instead of "Amazing Spider-man 2: Skate or Die!"?

@JDUKE25

Do you realize that Sony and Webb will probably gonna choose the Ultimate version of the Goblin for the new trilogy?

@JP I personally think TASM is a better movie than spider-man 1 but not 2, spider-man 2 is still the best spider-man movie in my opinion. But the sequel has potential as long as electro isn't the only villain I'd really like to see mysterio or kraven get tossed into the mix

Spectacular spiderman was an inspiration for the movie also so wee could see an electro similar to that in the movie

Where are the filmmakers gathering that Marvel's heroes have had prior relationships with their villains before their transformation? Peter knew nothing of Norman Osborn or Max Dillon before they were villains.

@Spideyguy94 I definitely think the sequel is where I'll judge Webb as what I didn't like about the Amazing Spider-Man was mostly due to forcing it to be different from Sam Raimi and it just came up short in my eyes.

Definitely agree on needing another villain. I like those choices, maybe even Chameleon?

Am I the only one who actually enjoyed TASM? It was refreshing to see a Spiderman movie that wasn't focused solely on a terrible love interest.

So in a world where villains like Venom, Doc Ock, Kraven, Carnage, Green Goblin, Kingpin, Hobgoblin and Mysterio, Electro is the enemy...

Not excited at all.

Stupid.

@CaptainCanti
No you weren't. I loved it.

Yeah, telling more of the parents' story is like revealing Wolverine's total back-story... It's just one of those things that shouldn't be explained and the reader (viewer) can fill in those blanks themselves.
I wasn't crazy about TASM but I didn't hate it (except the god-awful soundtrack). One thing I liked was Flash Thompson and Pete's relationship.. That's one thing the Raimi films didn't do was Flash's Spider-man obsession.. More of that would be fun..
Lawliet
Lawliet - 11/1/2012, 8:56 PM
TASM was good but I won't say it was amazing, don't get me wrong I love this new version, because it's more accurate to the comics, but there's alot of flaws they should take care for the sequel. this guy knows what I'm talking about

also, Peter's parents were killed by the Red Skull.. which is neither here nor there , I know. What we know about this new take on it is that Peter's dad worked for Norman Osborn. Norman may have been looking for the key to immortality. Richard Parker may have found it and decided that Norman wasn't fit to have this kind of power so Norman kills Peter's parents..
Seems to be where they're going.

webb doesn't know what the hell he wants. it shows and the franchise is already suffering for it.

its not the worst case scenario, but we are dangerously close to getting to a place where none of this will be memorable, and it will jump around without a straight lineage of storytelling from minute one.

so much potential lost with this one. we need new writers & a new director immediately.

well let's see, is Peter Parker's birth and parent's background IN the comics? if not don't use it in the next or ANY movies. and i hope Sony realizes WITHOUT Avengers cross-overs there's a huge gap in Spidey's time-Lines.albeit there's alot of material to make moviesw with and i hope Sony doesn't get the idea to put Spider-Man and Fantastic 4 together, continuity would dictate further connections so Sony should watch what material they use for Spider-Man and MUST leave out ANY reference to any connection to any other Marvel Heroes and villians connected to Avengers unless they revamp Spider-Man's ENTIRE universe

can they not? we already barely got to see peter in the spider man suit, if they keep exploring his parents, he gets less screen time
