Cthulhu is that you?
Wildaniel - 12/26/2012, 10:43 AM
It would have been great too see Bane wear some of these in a flashback!
TheRedSkull - 12/26/2012, 10:47 AM
To be honest, I could do a lot better with drawing those concepts...some look they've been sketched by 3 year olds
hope420 - 12/26/2012, 10:52 AM
So awesome that they let children do designs for em.
unknownfacts - 12/26/2012, 10:52 AM
Morale of the story is they gave us the best Bane mask possible but had alot bad ideas in mind.
0bstreperous - 12/26/2012, 10:53 AM
I swear I wanted to like this movie and thought Maggie gyllenhall would be the worst casting choice Nolan could make

When this gets snubbed at the Oscars all those paid for reviews can suck it
TankD - 12/26/2012, 10:53 AM
This movie makes me lose faith in humanity.
sosa4693 - 12/26/2012, 10:55 AM

Darthkostis - 12/26/2012, 10:55 AM

hope420 - 12/26/2012, 11:02 AM
What's with the sex mask that has a glory hole for the mouth???
Shamo - 12/26/2012, 11:03 AM
yet we still ended up with a shit mask.
DarthBooty - 12/26/2012, 11:22 AM
What did they do, pay a sheet-ton of money to a kid in high school for costume "design"?? Alot of these remind of crap I would doodle in my binder when I was bored in class...damn
rbfn04 - 12/26/2012, 11:24 AM
A lot of these (most) are not exactly concepts but very early ideas...
GammaRage - 12/26/2012, 11:24 AM
After all of the concept designing, they chose goatse....
DarthBooty - 12/26/2012, 11:25 AM
The third mask on the top row reminds me of Mr. Bill from SNL,"OH NOOOOOOOOO!"
Newbus - 12/26/2012, 11:34 AM
The first one looks like my avatar.
Tomontherun99 - 12/26/2012, 11:42 AM
I don't think you people know the difference between preliminary sketches and actual concept art. Pretty much every movie design starts with crappy scribbles like this. The whole reason they exist is to give a rough look at what they want the design to look like, what doesn't work and what they'll develop into actual concept art, usually computer renders, marquettes or kickass paintings.
RobertGarlen - 12/26/2012, 11:48 AM
that is some sexy S&M gear.
opusrandy - 12/26/2012, 12:11 PM
I have to say, I am baffled by some of the comments on this article complaining about the quality of the artwork. Since none of you can probably draw a straight line or clearly write your own name, I'll explain something to you about concept art. It is exactly that, a CONCEPT. The point of concept art is to start by brainstorming. Does anyone know what brainstorming is? I'll tell you. That image up top with all the different masks on it, is the results of idea brainstorming. Some of you won't get that though because your nor creative or smart, but I just felt the need to let that out. If the artists took the time to make some sort of spectacular piece everytime someone wanted a brainstorm session of concepts, the artists would not get anywhere...
opusrandy - 12/26/2012, 12:13 PM
the pictures might be bad quality, because they don't need a good quality image to get their idea across, they need to create an image that represents exactly that... the IDEA. Once the idea is solidified, better concept art can be created with more detail based off the idea. This article is showing how many IDEAS were created before the final product... it is not meant to showcase the quality of the artwork. I feel better now.
opusrandy - 12/26/2012, 12:16 PM
tomontherun99, I just saw your comment, well put
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 12/26/2012, 12:24 PM
That is the worst concept art I've ever seen.
Supes17 - 12/26/2012, 12:36 PM
DAFUQ is this shit?
Supes17 - 12/26/2012, 12:37 PM
"The concept 'artists' have my permission to die."
ABLEE337 - 12/26/2012, 1:07 PM
Seriously?
EmoSpidey - 12/26/2012, 1:09 PM
Still don't like Bane from TDKR. IMO, he is a made up character that was given the name Bane. There was nothing about him, outside of the name, that would identify him as Bane. I understand that certain liberties have to be taken when adapting comics to film, but this one did not make sense to me. I love Batman Begins and the Dark Knight and I won't say that I hate the Dark Knight Rises, but I was very disappointed. Chris Nolan got lazy (or overly confident) on this one.
fettastic - 12/26/2012, 1:13 PM
@DangerStranger, after sorting through all these various degrees of shit, you come in and blow them all away with how Bane is supposed to look. If that's who was actually in the damn film it would have been [frick]ing spectacular!

Instead we got....well......just look at that stupid thing.
birdfists - 12/26/2012, 1:30 PM
I think some of these were pretty good.
Name - 12/26/2012, 2:18 PM
Some of you are ignoring the logic behind rough sketches as initial designs simply to sound funny. Im sure if you try really hard you could produce better artwork than some of these that obviously took a few minutes.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 12/26/2012, 2:21 PM
Glad they did what they did after seeing those...
Jollem - 12/26/2012, 2:30 PM
all those little heads and stuff were probably done quick and simple. they're just supposed to give the impression of what they are going for. i don't think they were supposed to be considered masterful works of art

i like the random batman head in there :)
Vital - 12/26/2012, 2:34 PM
Nolan and that design lady drew these, but these are mostly Nolan, he even said so in the extras when I watched TDKR bluray.
nerdman81 - 12/26/2012, 2:39 PM
These look like crap! Too bad the one they used in the final product wasn't any better! Y'know I was thinking they didn't even need to make Bane turn into some HUGE, hulking guy, but at least could've used some sort of steroid that pumps into him making him stronger instead of the inhaled Bayer pain reliever he had! I would have been more apt to accept that than what we were given. Bane would've been easy as hell to translate to the more realistic approach Nolan was going for. Just call the steroid Venom. BOOM! Not so hard. Still couldn't accept the "Batman" though, but woulda made it so much easier to swallow. Sigh
santoanderson - 12/26/2012, 2:41 PM
I think as soon as you take away those lucha-libre lines and colors, you end up with a gimp mask. Just imagine, The Dark Knight Rises could've been Batman vs the Gimp from Pulp Fiction.
ravennpilot - 12/26/2012, 2:43 PM
There was interesting things happening there. It looked as if they wanted something "evil" or "back alley" for the final design. The one sculpted piece looks awesome but I guess that wasn't the look.
NillaSoul - 12/26/2012, 2:56 PM
Only thing missing was SandPeople of Tatooine.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 12/26/2012, 3:10 PM
What could've been....

I could've forgave it if they hadn't figuratively castrated Bane by taking away 50% of his formidability...

Venom:

Not a beer gut:

DTor91 - 12/26/2012, 3:18 PM
@opusrandy

Exactly. I completely agree with what you said. Most concepts start off as scribbled silhouettes. But want to see more baffling comments? Look up any article that has the name John Romita, Jr. in it. You will see some of the most outlandish comments on this site ever.
DTor91 - 12/26/2012, 3:20 PM
@TheGambitFreak

A person who puts on muscle naturally without going for tone but simply mass will look the way Tom Hardy did. That's not a beer gut. You'd have to hire to a straight up 'roid user for the Bane of the comics.
Jollem - 12/26/2012, 3:45 PM
bane was awesome in tdkr!
AlexDeLarge87 - 12/26/2012, 3:54 PM
Damn! If only Dwayne Johnson would have the acting skills of Oldman, Freeman, Caine, Hardy and Bale. He would have been fantastic Bane. He looks alot like the character from comics.
DTor91 - 12/26/2012, 3:54 PM
@Jollem

Agreed. Much better than the Bane in the comics, whom after his debut was dumbed down to just the big, strong archetype.
LOL - 12/26/2012, 3:56 PM
The beer gut statement isn't true. That is NOT true beer gut but an excess of gaining muscle mass in a VERY short time. This is how Christian Bale looked BEFORE Nolan had him slim down a tad for the Batman Begins movie because he got too big to fit into the costume. Hardy beefed up fast, but didn't tone it enough. He could've done better but not within the time the production warranted, so in the end he looked a little more on the fat side than on the muscle side of things.

Any case, I hated Bane in TDKR... he was still someone's Henchman. He was a glorified Ubu with a breather mask.
Bigred20 - 12/26/2012, 4:10 PM
These look like jokes
INFO - 12/26/2012, 4:22 PM
AWSOME.
jimoakley666 - 12/26/2012, 4:33 PM
Those skills...
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 12/26/2012, 4:37 PM
I know this. I'm just saying, you're going to be playing a character known by most as a Brute. Why would you not go for a lean look, where you could see your muscle definition as opposed to having the appearance of a protruding stomach? It's hilarious!

And yes, the Rock would've been SO much better.

I mean, compared to Hardy's previous film, Warrior, he looks so pathetic in TDKR. He lost all of his definition. He needs some advice from Hemsworth and Grillo.

Even I look more like Bane with a goddamn $20 dollar lucha mask for Pete Sake!

Then again. Maybe it was not Hardy's fault. I could see Nolan telling him to just workout here and there. I mean, the guy didn't even use venom for Bane, SMH.
marvel72 - 12/26/2012, 4:49 PM
out that page of twelve bane heads, number nine is the best.

@ thegambitfreak

that is exactly how bane should of look.
