Thom Schillinger is a 3D conceptual designer for the entertainment industry, creating advertising material and logos for popular television shows and for Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. We've recently featured his logo and poster designs for The Dark Knight Rises, X-Men 2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Now, take a look at his work on the advertising campaign for 2003's Daredevil.

"The logo with the interlocked double "D"s was essential as well as a stylized version of the comic name. I experimented with leather, steel, and glass in the logos, as well as doing some ultra high contrast 3D logos that feel almost 2D. I also hid a bit of braille into the rivets in a few ideas playing on the main characters skills as a blind superhero. They all spell out Daredevil." - Thom Schillinger

"These were early on in my 3D logo building days a decade back and we explored about a dozen conceptual directions. Today I have a both the 'bug' or little corner icon double D, as well as a full one sheet teaser logo with a full 3D field background done for the premiere." - Thom Schillinger

"A series of 3D illustrations that I did for Art Director Josiah Ludovico at BLT. His idea was to do a variety of stylized buildings that together form the two D's in the Daredevil Icon with the Double D's. I did a variety of designs, and angles with cross-crossed D's, and parallel ones, and some floating in the clouds.

Some were very cartoon-ish and stylized, and some were more realistic. These realistic passes did go the final round, but were passed by for the finals by the client." - Thom Schillinger

Daredevil (2003) was written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson. The cast included: Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios, Colin Farrell as Bullseye, Michael Clarke Duncan as Wilson Fisk / The Kingpin, Jon Favreau as Franklin 'Foggy' Nelson, Scott Terra as Young Matt, Ellen Pompeo as Karen Page and Joe Pantoliano as Ben Urich. The film earned $179 million at the worldwide box office, against a budget of $78 million.

couple good ones in there, from an artistic point of view
NoJobBOB - 2/27/2013, 9:03 PM
I actually thought the movie was good. NOT GREAT but Underrated at least.

One of those logos look like the one DC used prior to the nu52.

It's kind of sad that Affleck (and quite a few other people) look back on this as an embarrassing disappointment. It was a good popcorn flick. It was fun. Not high art. It may have been more satisfying to have it go a darker route, but this is what we got. Plus the onscreen chemistry between Affleck and Garner was insane!

TheRedHood - the director's cut really does make the movie better.
skidz - 2/27/2013, 9:14 PM
@TheRedHood: It was an improvement in a lot of ways.

Never thought the movie deserved as much crap as it got. I don't like most of the designs, but I really dig the one that looks like it's part of the leather of the costume.

Honestly, my main complaint with this movie was the music. Evanescence is awful.
Wingding - 2/27/2013, 9:32 PM
Heh, I do love me some high contrast double "D"s ;)

I actually enjoyed Daredevil, despite Affleck's miscasting and some spotty CGI here and there. Gets WAY more hate than it deserves. If I remember correctly, it even got better critical reviews than Spider-man 2 did at the time.

The directors cut as we all know was much better and is better than TDKR, ASM, Iron Man 2, both FF's, X-3, Superman Returns, and is somewhat close to Captain America.

They came sooo close to hitting it big with that film. But they went through too much of DD's history in one film. They didnt have much left for a sequel.

It's been 10 years...where's the reboot?!?!

I agree. The director's cut made for a faaaar less painful viewing experience. Still wasn't a fan of Affleck as DD. Matt Damon would have been better. Hopefully, they'll give this property another chance as I believe Daredevil is one of those characters that could really break out with the right film.

My biggest defense of DD was that I thought Ben Affleck did a good job as the lead. That and MCD was awesome. But thats a given cause he was awesome in everything.

It still makes me sad. :[

The director is mostly to blame for his glossy, music-video direction. The action scenes are ok, but the fight scenes between DD & Elektra just don't have the intensity. My one major gripe with the movie is actually Jennifer Garner, which is not to say she did a bad job, she was fine. But you can tell, just from looking at her that deep down, she's really, really nice.
DudeGuyMan - 2/28/2013, 5:16 AM
DD = Boobs

Jennifer Garner is a [foo foo]

I actually like the second one of the first batch. The second and third batches all contain better-made logos, but most of them fit better for a drink product.
Jolt17 - 2/28/2013, 5:38 AM
I like how he experimented with the yellow and Braille, though. However, I've always been rooting for the concept of Braille alphabets as the main feature in the logo.

Me A Decade Ago:
Ben Affleck is a joke! He'll never have a career again!

Me Now:
Ben Affleck is one of my favorite directors of this generation! I'm so happy that Argo won!

Director's Cut is one of my favorite comic films. Daredevil needs a reboot. Or Marvel should use him in the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series as a street-level superhero along with Heroes for Hire and the Punisher. So much potential, so many obscure villians and Daredevil's comic book run over the last decade has been nothing short of amazing. There are hundreds of stories that could easily be adapted to the big/small screen.
DrDoom - 2/28/2013, 9:18 AM
Cool logos.

I thought Affleck did a good job. The film's issues weren't his fault, and MCD was immaculate as Kingpin. Still hoping for a reboot featuring Mr. Fear.
nrocket3 - 2/28/2013, 11:12 AM
My favorite CBM of all time 2003 Daredevil.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 2/28/2013, 12:19 PM
Some of those are awesome. Some suck.
