In this six-minute segment from The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition you can view a few of the actors that auditioned for the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins. Chris Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas provide commentary as Cillian Murphy and Eion Bailey's screen tests are shown. Cillian, didn't seem like a good fit for Batman, but his Bruce Wayne was so impressive that Nolan recommended him for the role of Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow. While, Bailey, Once Upon A Time's Pinocchio, seems out of place as Bruce Wayne, but fills the Batsuit quite well. Luckily, Nolan chose Christian Bale ("The Prestige") for the part, and the rest is history. Now, we're stuck with Ben Affleck ("Argo"), so, yeah.

Eion Bailey Audition - 2:05 & Cillian Murphy Audition - 6:23

Cillian Murphy - Batman/Bruce Wayne

Eion Bailey - Batman/Bruce Wayne

Batman Begins: Explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

The Dark Knight: The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

The Dark Knight Rises: It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Awesome video.1st guy was awful! Christian Bale was definitely the best choice.N Yea wasn't feeling Cillian as Bruce or Bats.
40oz - 9/25/2013, 10:47 AM
Bales voice did sound the best out of those 3.
CherryBomb - 9/25/2013, 10:48 AM
Atleast Eion has a bit of a stubble going on.
That's what I like on my BatMEN.
Not Batboys.
MrReese - 9/25/2013, 10:50 AM
@Gusto We don't need reassurance we all know whats up. XD
Boyle360 - 9/25/2013, 10:50 AM
Cillian's was good. He doesn't really suit the part, but from what I saw he made a great effort. His Batman voice was good too!
MrReese - 9/25/2013, 10:56 AM
@CherryBomb Bruce is a playboy there's no need 4 the stubble. Also his Bat voice was the same as his original Bruce voice.I'm glad Chris had the decency in changing it...throat cancer or not.His "Swear 2 me!" line came out better outta Christian's voice.
SKOne - 9/25/2013, 11:00 AM
It's funny, I never knew Eion Bailey auditioned for Batman Begins. Ever since I saw him on Once Upon A Time, I thought he would make a great Batman.
Ryden - 9/25/2013, 11:05 AM
Out of the three Bale was the best. It;s funny because Eon Bailey actually looks the best in the batsuit I think, but he just didn't bother to differ Batman from Bruce Wayne.
supermarioworldE - 9/25/2013, 11:15 AM
I love how reserved (and subtly crazy) Cilian came off in the part. Like a Batman/Scarecrow hybrid.
HughJasol - 9/25/2013, 11:17 AM
Bale was the right actor for the job. Best CBM Trilogy.
soforizo - 9/25/2013, 11:20 AM
Cillian Murphy would've been too wacky, but his voice was better than Bale's. Then again Bale sounded better here than in the actual movie.
Zordan - 9/25/2013, 11:26 AM
cillian is better that i thought but too skinny
DarthBooty - 9/25/2013, 11:34 AM
While watching Cillian's performance as Batman all I could look at were his lips! Damn!
DJRock93 - 9/25/2013, 11:41 AM
@mantinium there is no need for yelling
megabatfan - 9/25/2013, 11:44 AM
Lol, i'm lovin this fact s#!t. Fact.
MsDarkPhoenix - 9/25/2013, 11:49 AM
Bale's 'swear to me' is AWESOME!!!! He was the right choice for Bruce and Batman.
typicalfanboy - 9/25/2013, 11:57 AM
Bales test wasnt as over the top as what we saw in begins.
ChanchoMcGrady - 9/25/2013, 11:59 AM
I actually liked Cillian's Batman voice, but he didn't look right for the role. Bale did end up being the best (including the voice), but I am super glad that they kept Cillian on as Scarecrow; he was perfect for that role. I wish he'd had more of a part to play in the sequels.
ndwwrestler2 - 9/25/2013, 12:01 PM
Whoa. Cillian sounds very intimidating as Batman. Bale was probably the right choice, but I don't think anybody would've complained about Cillian's Batman.
JediPhilosopher - 9/25/2013, 12:01 PM
@Ryden I agree. Eon Bailey did look the best for the part. I have to wonder why they pass up an actor rather than work with him more.
gmoney0505 - 9/25/2013, 12:08 PM
Looks and acting are too separate things and time is a factor. Bale nailed it. His swear to me delivery sold it and his presence as Bruce Wayne was spot on. HE was the best for the part. Gave Cillian the second best as his voice was great for Bats. The other guy was just terrible. Cillian gave a great performance in which he got Scarecrow out of it and he was a blast to watch in all of them especially the courtroom scenes for me.
JediPhilosopher - 9/25/2013, 12:09 PM
Different priorities than me..
TheWolverine08 - 9/25/2013, 12:17 PM
Love this scene.
JediPhilosopher - 9/25/2013, 12:18 PM
There's something weird about Eion Bailey's face. Maybe I wouldn't have chosen him.
JediPhilosopher - 9/25/2013, 12:22 PM
@gmoney0505 Christian Bale may be the best you can imagine for the part. But I've never seen anyone in the part yet who came close to really representing Batman on the screen.
OrsonRandall - 9/25/2013, 12:27 PM
Murphy is currently badass in Peaky Blinders check it out.

Eion Bailey looked far better than Bale in the suit, but really seemed weak speaking the lines.

Bale ended up being the weakest link in Nolan's trilogy, and one of the worst casting decisions in recent CBM. Admittedly, Batman is a hard role to cast.
bestintheworld - 9/25/2013, 12:37 PM
@godzillafart

I'm having trouble understanding the dozens of comments you've made on Bale as Batman. Did you or did you not like him in the role?
GodzillaKart - 9/25/2013, 12:46 PM
@bestintheworld: Ahhhh. Sarcasm, I presume? Regardless, I'll clarify.

Although the Nolan trilogy did some amazing things, the actual character of Batman was amazingly bad for a number of reasons.

First, Bale was a terrible choice. He is not at all physically intimidating, not in small part to his freakishly tiny jaw. He is a great actor in the right roles, but does not seem to be effective at playing a benevolent character. He was convincing as Bruce playing douche bag Bruce, but not the real Bruce, and he was terrible as Batman. He also seems to have a problem with standing around with his mouth hanging open. When he was wearing the mask, he looked like a little kid in scuba goggles, talking funny because he couldn’t breath out of his nose, which, sadly, exaggerated his mouth hanging open.

The writing and directing of the character was bad too. Batman is supposed to be an extraordinary human. If he is not written to be smart, and not choreographed to be a skilled fighter, all the gadgets in the world can’t convince you he is a bad ass. Very non-compelling take on the character.

Nolan’s films are unique in that most everything surrounding the weak lead was strong. (Although I will never understand why Gotham morphed into Chicago between BB and TDK).

I think when people say they want the "Arkham" version of the character, I think they mean they want a brilliant detective, master of stealth, expert strategian, and world class hand to hand combatant.

Does that clear things up? If not, I could go on. :)
SpectacularJoShFest - 9/25/2013, 12:53 PM
Wow, Cillian Murphy was AWESOME as Batman too...but that other guy... Eion's "Swear to me" was weak as [frick] and his Bruce Wayne was shit also.

Batman Begins is an amazing movie. And I don't remember who said this but it's true, whoever thinks Batman Begins and TDK are in the same universe is delusional.
Highflyer - 9/25/2013, 12:59 PM
Cillian is an AWESOME scarecrow!
Vanquisher - 9/25/2013, 1:10 PM
Without question, Bale was the best of all the Batmans (or Batmen) and the best casting choice. It's just a shame that the Nolan Universe set the beginning and formed the end of his story. It would have been nice to see Batman develop into the crabby superhero he would eventually be. Other than that...Christian Bale was perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Ryguy88 - 9/25/2013, 1:13 PM
Eion Bailey really looked good in the part but he didn't act well in it. Cillian Murphy is a great actor but he had no business trying out. It'll be tough to ever top Bale as the all around best Batman.
BatManHeisenberg - 9/25/2013, 1:24 PM
No offense Mantinium, but you make DC fans look worse then Marvel extremists. Try not to hate on Marvel calling them weird names or whatever.... With the amount of times I have seen you in the hall of shame, you could get banned. And it is just a recommendation, but maybe not do all capitols? Just kinda bothers me, but your choice, man.
GodzillaKart - 9/25/2013, 1:31 PM
