In 2004, Henry Cavill was cast by McG ("Charlie's Angels") to play Superman/Clark Kent in his unproduced Superman film, Superman: Flyby. A film that was written by J.J. Abrams ("Star Trek Into Darkness") and would've also starred Robert Downey Jr. as Lex Luthor. This took place two years before Bryan Singer's Superman Returns. What killed McG's Superman: Flyby? McG would later reveal that his fear of flying grounded the production. Warner Bros. wanted the film to shoot in Australia for cost-savings, while McG wanted it to be shot entirely in North America. Which of course would've kept him traveling on a plane. Don't feel too bad for Cavill, it only took him a decade but he finally suited up as Superman for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, and will reprise the role for Batman Vs. Superman.
STORY: Young PRINCE KAL-EL is rocketed to Earth in an effort for Jor-El to allow Kal-El to fufill the prophecy of being the chosen Kryptonian to end a century old Civil War.

On Earth Kal-El is found by the KENTS a kindly couple who's hopes were to be parents. After surviving the years Kal-El now Clark Kent's life is shown through a series of scenes showcasing his life before Superman which leads right up to the moment he meets Lois Lane at a Metropolis College. All the while the young TY-ZOR Cousin to Clark Kent goes from Planet to Planet in search of his Cousin in hopes of killing him and crushing the war. When he arrives to Earth he discovers his Cousin has become SUPERMAN Earth's greatest protector and the two engage in a battle for the Earth it self. - CBM's Robert Garlen

It looks like they kept some things for Superman Returns. Superman: The Movie still remains my favorite Superman film. Hopefully DC can tighty up with the new movies.
dickmastaflex - 1/23/2014, 6:30 PM
Looked pretty sweet
marvel72 - 1/23/2014, 6:30 PM
some very nice concept art.
DelTorite - 1/23/2014, 6:30 PM
And people complain about Man of Steel. This shit would probably have killed both MCU (RDJ as Luthor) and Superman.
Mike89 - 1/23/2014, 6:31 PM
Glad this never happened. McG directing this? the guy who did terminator salvation? Yeeeesh!
M3T4LL0 - 1/23/2014, 6:32 PM
Jor El commits suicide???
MrCBM56 - 1/23/2014, 6:33 PM
I read the script... It was actually pretty good. Although it totally re-imagined Superman's mythos, I was ok with that.
jlabatman - 1/23/2014, 6:33 PM
Damn, this almost happened? RDJ as Lex eh, probably would have been pretty good!
Mike89 - 1/23/2014, 6:33 PM
The concept art is pretty cool though.
Mike89 - 1/23/2014, 6:34 PM
Ill have to admit RDJ as Lex would have been, interesting.
duncboy - 1/23/2014, 6:35 PM
The story sounds absolutely terrible.
Ancar - 1/23/2014, 6:36 PM
"Young price Kal-El", suicide Jor-El, Anakin Skywalker's mother Lara... THAK GOD THIS SHIT NEVER HAPPENED!!!
TheAbaryMan369 - 1/23/2014, 6:37 PM
LOL Robert Downey Jr. as Lex
Ancar - 1/23/2014, 6:38 PM
By the way, I read the script too and it is a piece of [frick]ing shit!

I love Abrams movies but this project was totally wrong:(
Humperdink - 1/23/2014, 6:39 PM
You know as a concept...it doesn't sound all that bad.

I don't like McG as a director, he's a bit derivative and pedestrian when it comes to the art/craft, but the story and concept is sort of interesting and of course reminiscent of what later became Man of Steel.
Superior - 1/23/2014, 6:40 PM
Is the first concept art pic supposed to have the reversed House of El crest on his outfit?
santoanderson - 1/23/2014, 6:44 PM
Not a fan of that shiny rubber suit. Looks like something out of Batman & Robin.
dethpillow - 1/23/2014, 6:46 PM
interesting.... this sounds like some genuinely weird stuff maybe.
i kinda want to search script and read some of it.
dethpillow - 1/23/2014, 6:50 PM
really a horrid name for a Superman movie tho.
Flyby

super unbelievably bad name for Superman movie.
dethpillow - 1/23/2014, 6:58 PM
also here's an interesting little bit from Abrams about it... http://screenrant.com/jj-abrams-superman-flyby-man-steel/ and i like the way he talks about Clark kent being like this persona of shame, guilt, fear and repression that became necessary and his parents instilling this fear of his own self into him, also necessary. but that's the idea of Clark Kent that I got from the first two movies, was like this mask of submission, and Superman as being the opposite of domination and him having a real complex and creating these two personas to act it out, sort of. neither one being the real Kal-El. MOS, I guess kind of tried to touch on this about his powers, but Abrams is talking about in a more direct and personal way and I seems in the short bit he speaks about it to get something pretty fundamental about Superman's character, and something that didn't come across all that well in MOS. interesting stuff, i really wanna read this now.
Prime - 1/23/2014, 7:01 PM
Plot seems pretty awful...
Arrowhead77 - 1/23/2014, 7:01 PM
For the best, I am sure....MoS suit much better than Flyby suit!
SpiderJerusalem - 1/23/2014, 7:03 PM
Waiting for bald photoshop of RDJ
sonokrypton - 1/23/2014, 7:13 PM
Judging by the first pic, we missed our shot of seeing Bizzaro on the big screen...
SuperCat - 1/23/2014, 7:15 PM
Is that Bizzaro in the first one? The "s" is reversed.
yonny616 - 1/23/2014, 7:15 PM
Jor-El commiting suicide?!
yonny616 - 1/23/2014, 7:17 PM
Why does the second picture SCREAM Star Wars to me?
SuperCat - 1/23/2014, 7:18 PM
@ Berserk

I see you noticed it too!
NeoBaggins - 1/23/2014, 7:22 PM
"Jor-El in a Kryptonian prison, moments before he commits suicide"

Dick Chowder.
ScorpioRisin - 1/23/2014, 7:45 PM
Sounds shit. Glad it didn't happen.
ChillBill66 - 1/23/2014, 7:48 PM
This would have meant no Iron Man...

Superman: Flyby, kinda ironic seeing as McG is a p**** who's scared to fly. Seriously? Not trying to be too harsh but dude they woulda paid you well for this movie. Take some sleeping pills before the flight and grow up...
Nemeres - 1/23/2014, 7:57 PM

I love seeing stuff from this project. I think that with some reworking, that 1st JJ Abrams draft could have been the ultimate crowd-pleasing Superman flick. Sigh.
MiIIes - 1/23/2014, 8:09 PM
Very nice.
GUNSMITH - 1/23/2014, 8:23 PM
FLY BY...WHAT A HORRIBLE TITLE
mgeoff88 - 1/23/2014, 8:25 PM
Jor-El committing suicide... Get the [frick] out of here! Jor-El would never go out like that!

@yoss "He must have seen Superman Returns."*fixed ;)
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 1/23/2014, 8:40 PM
Singer filmed some of the best action scenes in Superman Returns.
The plane rescue
The bullet to the eye
Saving Metropolis and
The boat rescue

Too bad the rest of the film couldn't live up to it.
BlackIceJoe - 1/23/2014, 8:45 PM
Man this sounds just bad. No other word then bad really says how bad it sounds. Also in the last picture is the city on a mountain or just the view that makes it look like that?
supermarioworldE - 1/23/2014, 8:48 PM
That concept art is gorgeous. I love the Daily Planet and those Krypton designs.

Maybe one day we'll get a perfect Superman movie.
MightyZeus - 1/23/2014, 8:53 PM
The concept art looks amazing. I especially love Metropolis.

Although i'm glad we have a fantastic Superman movie called "Man of Steel".
antoineflemming - 1/23/2014, 9:09 PM
So, this seems like Abrams all over it. Why? Because it's kinda like Star Wars. Look at what he did to Star Trek. Glad this never got made.

supermariworldE You really think that looks good, and that this is an example of a perfect Superman? Ok, you believe that....

@all the people talking about Bizarro, maybe the pic is flipped
