Deadline is reporting that fresh-faced Welsh actor Matt Ryan has been cast to play John Constantine in NBC's Constantine television series. The series will based on the Hellblazer comic book series that's published by DC Comics. The character was created by legendary and perpetually-grumpy comic book writer, Alan Moore. Constantine first appeared in Moore's Swamp Thing (vol. 2) #37 (June 1985). Several years later the character would receive his own comic book series, "Hellblazer," written by Jamie Delano. It is the longest running title under DC Comics' edgier venue, Vertigo. The character was the basis for the 2005 Constantine live-action film that was directed by Francis Lawrence ("The Hunger Games") and starred Keanu Reeves ("The Matrix").

His appearance is based on singer-songwriter, Sting, as the artists Stephen R. Bissette and John Totleben made that request based on their love of the rock band, The Police. Constantine has blonde hair, a British accent and is usually wearing a trenchcoat. He's a powerful sorcerer, but prefers to outsmart his opponents instead of relying on his magical gifts. He's a chain smoking, self-destructive, cynical man with a surly exterior. Probably caused from that dark cloud that hangs over him. He's a magnet for the weird and his friends have a habit of getting hurt or worse, dead.

As for the new television show, its described as:
Based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories, the project centers on John Constantine (Ryan), an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of CONSTANTINE defending us against dark forces from beyond. John Constantine is described as a working-lass Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her.

David S. Goyer and The Mentalist executive producer Daniel Cerone wrote the pilot. Neil Marshall ("The Decent") will direct the first episode. A series that will see Mike Ryan as the lead. The Welsh actor has lived in London and America, and his perhaps best known for playing Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Besides providing the voice for Edward he also gave a full motion-capture performance. You might also recognize him as Mick Rawson from the "Criminal Minds" spinoff series, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.

Idk, maybe add a bigger pic of him, in the article. I'd like to know what he looks like. Also, I saw the Constantine movie, and he didn't have an accent. The Keanu is never wrong! Never!!!
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:11 PM

TheRationalNerd - 2/21/2014, 8:23 PM
So will this Constantine character actually tie into the Justice League Dark film or will it just be another Arrow type of show that doesn't connect to the DCCU?
DrunkenNukem - 2/21/2014, 8:23 PM
I like this casting...looking foward to this show...hope to see sargon the sorcerer in this series
staypuffed - 2/21/2014, 8:23 PM
Better than Keanu.
DrunkenNukem - 2/21/2014, 8:24 PM
@TheBlackNerd....Guillermo del Toro said that he was willing to connect the tv show with the dark universe movie (if WB gives the green light to that project)
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 8:24 PM
Edward Kenway as Constantine? Brilliant! I hope he does the scouse accent.
mgeoff88 - 2/21/2014, 8:29 PM
I'm not familiar with this guy, but he looks a lot like Constantine.

@SpectreBlackJack I still to need play Revelations and AC3 before I rent AC4.
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:29 PM
Damn, now I kinda want to go through of ACIV now. But it's late and I don't feel like turning the damn thing on. [frick] the "white people problems" meme, that's what I call BlackJack problems. And I'm dead too. Forgot to mention that.
BatManiac - 2/21/2014, 8:32 PM
Black Flag is the best one in my opinion, and Edward Kenway is my favorite assassin so far, so I'm glad this guy got the role. Its unexpected casting, but I can see Matt Ryan doing a great job.
BatManHeisenberg - 2/21/2014, 8:32 PM
Has the look down, hope he has the chops to match them.
AgentEX - 2/21/2014, 8:32 PM
Into it. So much comic tv coming, I'm never going to have time for anything.
Lonewolf19 - 2/21/2014, 8:34 PM

DrunkenNukem - 2/21/2014, 8:34 PM
damn ..this guy looks more to Kyle Reese than jhon mcclane´s kid...

TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:35 PM
@mgeoff Ah, I see. I won't spoil anything for ya. IMO, Black Flag is the best of the series.
1. AC IV-9/10
2. AC II-9/10
3. AC III-7.5/10
4. AC Brotherhood 7.5/10
5. AC Revalations 7/10

man these are exciting times ahead, we get cap, guardians, spidey and xmen this year with Gotham and Constantine and then we get avengers age of ultron,im indifferent to FF right now, ant man, daredevil, iron fist, jessica jones and luke cage and batman vs superman in 2016!!
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:37 PM
Assassins wise:
Ezio>Edward>Connor>Altiar
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:39 PM
I really want some more info on the Assassins Creed movie. When I think of casting, the one role that is useless but sticks out on my head is Cumberbatch Haythem
ezio619 - 2/21/2014, 8:39 PM
i still need to get aciv black flag...i fail as an assassin
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:45 PM
It's hard not to spoil anything, but I'd say you're over half way through Desmond's story, so finish the games in chronological order.
BlackIceJoe - 2/21/2014, 8:48 PM
I wonder if he will dye his has? I really hope this show does well. I really like the character of Constantine so I want it to do well & be good. I wonder if Swamp Thing will show up or not?

Also if this does well hopefully WB will give Del Toro's Justice League Dark the green Light. Seeing as most likely JL will be filmed back to back with B/S I could see a 2018 version of JLD come out then. I really enjoyed the Hellblazer series so I have high hope that this can be an awesome tv show.
SuperCat - 2/21/2014, 8:50 PM
Don't think I've ever seen him in anything. But I definitely will be checking this show out.
yonny616 - 2/21/2014, 8:50 PM
BalckJack Edward and Connor over Altair? Lol no! Altair is way better that those, Ezio's still my favorite though.
TheRealistStarLord - 2/21/2014, 8:51 PM
DC winning the TV yet again
- Arrow
- The Flash
- Gotham PD

and now
- Constantine

Are they all in the same universe? I know Gotham PD belongs to Fox.... *sighs*
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:52 PM
I think we will see JL in 2017-2018, so HLD might not come until 2020-2021
TheEmptySoulessSpectre - 2/21/2014, 8:56 PM
@Yonny Edward is [frick]ing awesome. Altair is a bore in AC 1. However, I really enjoyed his parts in Revalations. Connor ain't exactly interesting either, but I found the way he was connected to everything and the way he grew in AC III a much more interesting.
JoeMomma29 - 2/21/2014, 8:56 PM
Solid choice!
Nomis - 2/21/2014, 8:58 PM
Who is he?
JasonBlue - 2/21/2014, 8:59 PM
I'll tune in. Loved the movie.
Moohika - 2/21/2014, 9:03 PM
I like this, and I actually didn't hate the Keanu Reeves Constantine movie either.
CaptShipwreck - 2/21/2014, 9:04 PM
The 3rd show of the season to get canceled is this one
JoeMomma29 - 2/21/2014, 9:10 PM
Awwwwwww as usual look at CaptShipwreck getting butt hurt over another DC related show.........
DeathstrokeTerminator - 2/21/2014, 9:11 PM
@CaptShipwreck
Doubt that. If Arrow is the biggest show on a network like the CW and people still watch AOS, then Constantine should be just fine on a huge network like NBC.
ComicsBornAndBred - 2/21/2014, 9:13 PM
He's got the look down. British actors tend to be really good anyway. I'm interested In the show as long as Goyer doesn't write any episodes
