Ledger nominated for Golden Globe

Dark Knight star recieves posthumous nomination, although The Dark Knight was mysteriously missing in action...
The Golden Globe nominations have been announced and although The Dark Knight had been hotly tipped for numerous noms, it only recieved one, Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledgers turn as The Joker.

Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose on Academy Awards nominations day last Jan. 22.

“Heath was a friend of mine,” said actor Terrence Howard(Iron Man), a presenter at the nominations ceremony. “He gave his all in that film. I think he will win in that category. He’ll also get an Oscar.”

i agree..but im not sure about the posthumous thing..i mean ..not to sound disrespectful here but, the guys dead! being nominated is fine but should he actually win over others that are , yknow..living?

If his performance is better than "living nominees," then, yes, he should win over them.

I really don't understand your mindset in asking that question.

Well i doubt his performance will be bettered, but wel see. as for my mindset? so the whole "im not sure if a dead guy should win an oscar" didnt cover that for you?

like i already said, i dont mean to be disrespectful, and it was a powerhouse performance..but im not totally sold on the posthumous thing..its a bit creepy if you ask me. sure the man should be honoured for his work and tribute should be paid to him, but im not sure an oscar should be given to someone who cant collect it due to being no longer of this earth! BUT, obviously being the fan of his acting that i am part of me would love to see the recognition..maybe being nominated is enough tho. its worth debating i guess

How darest thou. No, really though, he SHOULD recieve the Golden Globe and an Oscar, his performance was phenomenal. Heath Ledger was great.

maybe so. like i say, im not sure how i fell about it really. i do know that if he wins ill be pretty damn happy about it one way or the other

I agree the nomination is enough, he is dead whether we like it or not. May the best contender win.

I meant I don't understand why you would think that maybe he shouldn't win because of his death.

No offense. It's just that the idea of a posthumous acting award (as long as it is deserved) doesn't bother me nor would I have ever even thought it would bother anyone.

I was just trying to understand where you're coming from.

Awards go to the person who performed best, we saw TDK, we liked TDK, this means his performance was completed, and it was completed well. That is all that should matter regarding who is nominated or wins.

Haven't looked to see who else is up for the award, so I can't say whether I think he is the best or not.

You know it really sucks that Heath will be the last live action joker for now. Sure his performance was incredible but I would really like to see a Mark Hamill style joker on the silver screen.

Ledger will compete against Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for their roles in war comedy Tropic Thunder, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt, and Ralph Fiennes for The Duchess.

This will be a tough one...

Some awards do have a "no posthumous nominations" rule, such as the Nobel Prize. Can't win THAT one if you're dead.

Should Ledger win regardless? I haven't seen any of the other movies so i'll sit out on that debate :P

Where the hell is the Gary Oldman nomination? Underrated much? There's not an ounce of Gary that took this as a "Genre film" and just played up the part. He played a Gordon so real that no one even talks about it because it so perfectly worked.

And Heath SHOULD win both. His joker was terrifying and perfect. Charlie Chaplin & Charlie Manson can eat their heart out...

Hey SuperFlyinPwers, I totally agree with you. Mark Hamill is my favorite Joker, I absolutely loved his interpretation, and it would be awesome to see someone take that interpretation to the big screen.

Heath's performance was great, but I simply didn't like the interpretation as much. He played up being psychotic obviously, but there was a certain suavity and unpredictable gentlemanlike nature in all the other Jokers i've seen that Heath totally let go of in order to pursue the anarchist, pschyotic, sickness of the Joker. Nicholson really played the mysterious suavity up, but threw the S at the gruesome, sick, tongue-lolling that Heath emphasized. Hamill, within the kid/cartoon limitations he was presented with, mixed up the two most brilliantly. I actually loved it so much that I personally wrote him fanmail and received his autograph via mail. Totally off-topic, sorry. Back to the subject...

So in my views:

Yes, I think Heath did a phenomenal job as an actor.

No, I didn't like his Joker.

Yes, Gary Oldman should get something because he was amazing. My midnight showing crowd cheered when Gordon came back to life.

No, I don't think Heath should get a 'material' award if he's dead (or immaterial), it should be given to someone who will benefit from the honor (such as it furthering their career or upping their salary).

but yes, he should be honored somehow for his abilities and tragic death.

I've no doubt this subject will become big if he gets an oscar nomination, and the fans will not be the only people discussing it. Probably the Academy, the other nominated actors, etc will give their piece because they will become directly affected by the outcome.
