Im sure like me, most of you thought it would only be a matter of time before Chris Nolan went to work on another Batman movie. And it may still be the case..but IF it does happen it will most likely not be for a long while after his current project "Inception"..

IGN.com reports that according to Batman-on-Film, it is going to take a herculean effort on the part of Warner Bros. to sell Nolan on doing a third Bat-film, confirming an old rumor that the studio has indeed compiled a short list of replacement candidates...

"The death of Heath Ledger in January of 2008 rocked Mr. Nolan hard. So hard that Chris was convinced that TDK was going to be it for him and Batman on film," according to BoF's source, adding that the Joker was envisioned as the villain in the third film.

The source also informed the site that BoF is "correct in reporting that (Nolan) is developing story ideas with [Jonathan Nolan] and David Goyer, but it will be until AT LEAST 2012 before we see the Caped Crusader back [in theaters]. And that is only an EARLY ESTIMATE at best right now. They are even saying it might not be until 2013."

BoF's source went so far as to say that, as of now, there is no story for Batman 3.

I think i speak for most of us when i say, FRACK!

divo - 6/16/2009, 6:54 PM
Wow, this has actually ruined my life. And you know to be honest I wouldnt mind a reboot, BUT bales still under contract for a third film. Nolans really [frick]ing our assholes right now
itashy - 6/16/2009, 7:11 PM
i thought nolan and warner brothers set up a deal where warner brothers would pay for nolans inception but nolan had to sign for a third batman film...:? i like nolan and his films are good but i think its time for a new director to try his hand at the bat..and maybe mix the inital batman movies with nolans...because i honestly think nolans films are too realistic and takes from that this is a COMIC BOOK...its not supposed to be real...but i respect his vision and enjoy his films
answer - 6/16/2009, 7:12 PM
Bollocks!!!!

I wouldn't mind waiting 10 years for Nolan to feel up for Batman again if I had to. He could do The Dark Knight Returns then!
Osiris - 6/16/2009, 7:14 PM
Wow this sucks I was looking foreword to another batman by at least 2010, this is sad news indeed.
kyle - 6/16/2009, 7:18 PM
i am so effin pist about this, but where can you go with it now? only two questions really remained in last one, and that wouldn't be too great.

zach snyder can now make, the dark knight return's. miller did give him a thumb's up, so it could work out. batman films need to be rated "r", and not pg-13. this could work, and i know some people hated his recent movie. it was actually good, and whoever hates it... didn't understand it; or you're just pist about him being the director.
dxperry - 6/16/2009, 7:20 PM
I think Nolan should make one more Batman just so he can close some of the loose ends he left with TDK. I mean come on he left Joker alive and Batman has villian who killed five people (2 of them cops). Nolan shouldnt wait that long either. He made the best movie of the year, by far! Waiting 4 yrs to make another is Stupid. I hope this is just bullshit.
UltimateSpidey - 6/16/2009, 7:20 PM
i think Johnny would have been a great riddler, crap!
90caliber - 6/16/2009, 7:23 PM
Yessssssssssssssss! Take your time, rework the story and get it right. Obviously they had an idea of where they wanted to go and that's derailed with the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger. So now the best thing to do is be patient. They didn't come with the idea for TDK overnight. And besides I'm still waiting to see the real batcave. That's the only thing I didn't like about the TDK.
RorMachine - 6/16/2009, 7:33 PM
I dont mind waiting either but thats not the problem, since nothing has been set in stone the studio could replace Nolan if he takes too much time, and almost certainly will if he drags his feet until 2013.
TheSoulEater - 6/16/2009, 7:33 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Betty - 6/16/2009, 7:44 PM
How old will Bale be then? 41? I'd have to say a big no for Zach Snyder. How 'bout Bryan Singer? (ducks, shoe goes flipping by head)
stupify_me - 6/16/2009, 7:58 PM
I loved Begins and I loved TDK, but if Depp was cast in the third film I am 100% serious I wouldn't even bother watching it.
Bandrews1 - 6/16/2009, 7:58 PM
Oh god this isn't sounding good.
stupify_me - 6/16/2009, 8:01 PM
kyle dalton Batman does not need to be nor should it be Rated R. Batman is not filled with gore and doesn't need loads of sex or language. This isn't Punisher. Zack Snyder is ok, but should stay away from Batman in my opinion. It's not right for his style.
stupify_me - 6/16/2009, 8:02 PM
Also Betty if it's in 2014 Bale will be 40 when the movie premiers, but would of been 39 while filming. If it's in 2013 he will be 39 when it premiers and 38 while filming.
Betty - 6/16/2009, 8:08 PM
I don't think they should do TDK Returns just yet. He's got to be a regular practicing Batman for a few years before he can return, right?

I'd say they could squeeze out at least two more movies before that opus.
StephenStrange - 6/16/2009, 8:09 PM
I expected this.
They have a tough act to follow, and that's really putting it mildly.
I happen to know for a fact that Nolan would almost rather not do another one that make a third and not have it at least be as good as the last one, and personally I understand that.
One could look at it like this: Ledgers performance + humongous box office take + major positive critical acclaim + millions and millions of satisfied fans = the bar got set a little too high.
Hell, I would be reluctant too.
tasteochaos121 - 6/16/2009, 8:30 PM
For Nolan to come back, Depp needs to be Riddler with The Joker coming from a cell in Arkham in the shadows giving hints or something. Then another Arkham outbreak lets the Joker escape, never to be seen again. There ya go.
SHHH - 6/16/2009, 9:03 PM
Nobody should be surprised by this
thegreek - 6/16/2009, 9:26 PM
DAMN IT

samster10001 - 6/16/2009, 9:36 PM
I'm kind of relieved that he might not direct another one but not because I don't like Nolan I love all his work and consider The Dark Knight a masterpiece and think hes one of the most intresting and unique directors we have today. However after seeing The Dark Knight and knowing that Ledger is now dead I just feel like unless they had the Joker another bat film probably won't be as good. Just one of the last things that the Joker says to Batman at the end of the movie about how he felt like they would be doing this for a long time made me so happy when I first heard it until I realized that Ledger was already dead. I don't see anybodyelse in that role now but maybe i'm wrong and maybe Nolan can prove me wrong and possibly either hire another talented actor to play the Joker or bring in a different villain but for my money I still say the Joker will never be topped and Ledger's performance will never be bested.
Shadowelfz - 6/16/2009, 9:44 PM
Ledger did a fantastic performance but, then again, they said the same thing with Jack Nicholsons Joker. They thought no one could top that, and low and behold, Ledger came out of right field and reinvented the character, so who knows, maybe someone will, once again, come out of nowhere and amaze us with yet another interpretation of the Joker. You never know, ya know? ;)
Hellmont - 6/16/2009, 9:44 PM
I would love to see a film where Batman faces off against Bane and Bane Breaks his back and puts him out of commision and allosws Gotham to turn into a complete sewer of a city allowing villians like Clayface, Killer Croc and the Mad Hatter to emerge. We see their origins and wittness their crimes and then Batman makes a comeback with the help of Luscious Fox, Commisioner Gordon and Alfred.Having to flee Gotham to heal his wounds. Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham only to keep up appearances and to strategically locate and takes out these small Batman villans one by one and at the end a big show down between Batman and Bane. A bloody battle to the Death where Batman is a little bit handicapped and has to use all of his intellect and his knowledge of his surroundings to bring down and destroy Bane once and for all.

I could also wait for Nolan to make another Batman film.
GUNSMITH - 6/16/2009, 9:47 PM
THE TRUTH OF WHAT KIND OF ARTIST NOLAN IS IS THIS IS A DIRECTOR THAT GOES BY WHAT HE FEELS AND WHAT HE IS PASSIONETTE ABOUT.THE MOVIE WAS AWSOME BECAUSE IT FELT RIGHT, HE COULD SEE IT DO WELL AND IT MADE SENSE..I KNOW WE ALL WANT ANOTHER ONE, HELL I WANT TO SEE ANOTHER MORE THAN ANYONE, BY NOLAN, BUT I DONT THINK HE LOOKS AT NUMBERS OR MONEY THAT THE MOVIE GENERATES AT ALL, HE'S A STORY TELLER, A STORY TRANSLATER..I HONESTLLY WOULDNT WANNA SEE A FILM HE WAS PRESSURED TO DO, ITS NOT AN ASSEMBLY LINE DEAL WHERE ITS A ROBOTIC DEMAND TO MAKE ANOTHER AND ANOTHER, IF HE MAKES ANOTHER ONE, IT WILL BE DONE RIGHT,AND IF NOT DONE BETTER, WONT BE MADE BY HIM AT ALL..WHY ALL 3RD FILMS ARE NOT AS GREAT IS BECAUSE THEYRE PUSHED OUT..NOT FOR STORY'S SAKE, BUT FOR THE DOLLAR.
ryanjdrf1992 - 6/16/2009, 10:20 PM
GET THE HELL OVER YOURSELVES. would you rather have a third film or have the series just end WELL. BOTH GOOD MOVIES. however it will not be THAT long. It will be about the same amount of time as between Begins and TDK enough time for him to make one film. it will be only about 3 years. if it is any longer certin cast members may be getting to old in my opinion, so they will have to change cast if they find out Nolan can't direct. I would rather have a returning CAST that is still at good ages then a returning DIRECTOR and a cast that is all to old. but thats just me. and it should be your opinion to if you know whats good for you.
thwhtGuardian - 6/16/2009, 10:34 PM
"if you know whats good for you"

that kills me. I do however agree, if another suitable director came up to the plate, and the principles returned I wouldn't be pissed off about losing nolan. Maybe he could just write and produce, that be acceptable.
007440 - 6/16/2009, 10:38 PM
-___- The thing is that the criticism may affect the third film and bury Batman again if the Joker replacement fails..

People need to pick between Joker or the full Batman franchise. What is more important?!

Ledger made a masterpiece of a performance as the Joker but as much and we loved him in the film and his death is unfortunate, the show must go on. IMO

If anyone, it would be Johnny Depp, He could nail the role of the Joker, I believe. All he needs to do is study the Ledger character well and he could pull it off.
GUNSMITH - 6/16/2009, 10:47 PM
I AGREE TOTALLY, DEPP CAN PLAY THE JOKER..HEATH MADE AN AWSOME JOKER, IT ACTUALLY TOOK ME BY SUPRISE, ONE OF THOSE "OH WOW, I NEVER THOUGHT OF THE JOKER THAT WAY, AND ITS COOL"THINGS...BUT NOW THIK ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NOLAN, HE WAS BROKEN UP ABOUT LEDGER, SO MUCH SO WE WERE GIVEN THE MOST CRAPPIEST OF DVD EXTRAS EVER GIVEN TO AN AUDIENCE AND FANS WHO REALLY WANTED TO SEE THE BEHIND THE SCENES STUFF...I DONT THINK HE WILL REPLACE HEATH WITH ANY OTHER ACTOR, EVEN THOUGH DEPP IS PRETTY GOOD..KINDA LIKE DIRECTOR PROYAS WITH BRANDON LEE'S CROW..HE WONT EVER DO ANOTHER ONE BECAUSE HE WANTS BRANDON LEE TO OWN IT..JUST LIKE NOLAN PROBABLLY FEELS WITH HEATH AND THE JOKER.
Tobuttica - 6/16/2009, 10:53 PM
It'll happen. WB would be stupid not to have Nolan back. I can wait 4 years to have another awesome installment of Batman. After all, we did wait 13 years after Batman Returns for another great installment of Batman. If Nolan doesn't want to do it, let some other awesomely talented director take it on as long as it's not Joel Shumacher, or McG, or .....(list goes on for a while)....or Bryan Singer. Let Darren Aronofsky have a shot. His original Batman story was deemed too violent, but maybe WB is ready for it. Who knows. As long as there are no Robins, Bat-nipples, Alicia Silverstone, or a retarded Bane, I'll be okay. Or maybe I won't. Dammit.
HarrisonBergeron - 6/16/2009, 11:25 PM
Hasn't Nolan said that he won't work his movies into the DC Universe? That alone is enough for me to say good riddance.

Has anyone read "Enemies & Allies" it is a regular novel by Kevin J. Anderson that just came out? I think that using that outline could work well for merging the Nolan-verse with the DCU.
samster10001 - 6/16/2009, 11:29 PM
Actually the thing that I think may bury the film is not the Joker replacement but the possibility that they wont even have the joker in the new one because Ledger died. They really should'nt have killed off two face and made him the main villian in the new one or brought him back along with someone new playing the joker and have the two of them going all out with batman and each other. I was really hoping for something like that in The Dark Knight and kind of felt like that ending was kind of weak. And Johnny Depps not a bad actor but I'm not so sure he'd make a great joker. He might end up playing it like an evil version of Jack Sparrow.
lilej2 - 6/16/2009, 11:29 PM
i'm sick of hearing about how Nolan might not do another Batman film, you made one of the best comic book movies EVER and you don't wanna make a sequel as planned?! i'm at the point where i want Burton and Schumacher back
LEEE777 - 6/16/2009, 11:58 PM

Damn, this is the post i want lol! : D
THEHAWK - 6/17/2009, 12:00 AM
I wrote a story a while back for Batman 3 with a lesser known villain, and I woundn't mind them going that direction. give Batman a proper challenge for his detective skills. Check it out and let me know what you think, its pretty good if I say so myself ;)

If Nolan DOESN'T return, then WB will more than likely assign Zack Snyder (WATCHMEN) to step up to the franchise.

Truthfully, it wouldn't bother me at all if Nolan didn't come back. Try and see this from his point of view: He probably made the definitive film of his career. Sadly, the lives of two dear friends of his were lost. (Heath Ledger & Conway Wickliffe.)

These men weren't just co-workers to him; just like our co-workers are like extended family to us. So if he chooses to sit this one out, it's understandable.

He's taking his time with other projects, cause he needs a break. If in time he decides to come back and do a BATMAN film after Snyder or whom ever, WB will be MORE than happy to let him return.

My Pics:

1. JOHNNY DEPP or CRISPIN GLOVER for RIDDLER

2. BRITNEY MURPHY for HARLEY QUINN

3. JODY LYNN O'KEEFE for CATWOMAN

4. DANIEL DAY LEWIS for THE JOKER (Hey, you never know!) :)

And for the record: They may have had a funeral for Harvey Dent at the end of TDK, but they never did say they had one for TWO-FACE. ;)

TheMyth - 6/17/2009, 1:10 AM
Nolan is an asshole. He makessome good movies, but he is an asshole.
ub3r - 6/17/2009, 1:17 AM
this breaks my heart.
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 6/17/2009, 2:30 AM
@teabag - I'm with you with the pedestal thing, not just the movie but Heaths performance too. Don't get me wrong, the movie and Heath were near perfection. This "he re-invented the character" talk is bollocks. What Heath did was bring us the Joker we all think of in our heads onto screen.

I'm not too worried at this stage. A third film is a shoe-in and WB would be stupid not to have a short list of replacement directors in mind at this stage, it's just good business sense. That doesn't mean Nolan won't be back. Nolan ISN'T the only director who can do a good job of Batman but I would like to see him back. The wait isn't too long, one or two Bale tirades and we'll all be back in theaters before you know it.

One thing I would like when the 3rd does come to us - Everyone forget TDK! Judge this film on it's own merits.
