Evangeline Lilly Describes Her Character Tauriel In THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG
The former Lost actress chats to Total Film about playing a non-Tolkiien character in Peter Jackson's second Hobbit flick, Tauriel the Elf -- who Lilly says is supposed to be a "ruthless, deadly killer". Read on for more..
Evangeline Lilly will be playing the only major character (that we know of anyway) in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy that was created just for the movies. Some purists were a little annoyed by this, but let's be honest, the more female characters in Tolkien's testosterone fueled Middle Earth the better -- and it doesn't hurt that she's being played by someone the caliber of Lilly. Speaking to Total Film the Canadian actress spoke a little about "young" Tauriel, and from the sounds of things we'll be in for a much grittier she-elf than either Cate Blanchett's Galadriel or Liv Tyler's Arwen.
“She’s a very, very young elf, she’s only 600 years old, unlike Legolas who’s like, 1,900 years old and Thranduil who’s about 3,000 years old. She doesn’t have quite the wisdom and pose that those two boys do; she’s a little more... gritty. A little more spontaneous, passionate perhaps. To play this character I need to have a certain amount of grace,” said Lilly. “But I’m also supposed to be an absolutely ruthless, deadly killer."
