First Clip From PACIFIC RIM Hits

The very first clip from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim debuted on the Tonight Show last night. No Kaiju/Jaeger action just yet, instead we have Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost getting verbal with Charlie Hunnam's character. Check it out after the jump.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim will be released on July 12, 2013.

This movie is going to bomb. Something about Power Rangers and Godzilla and Transformers. Anyway, I'm still I'm going to see it.

Why's Elba talking like that ffs, what's with the exaggeration.

Its got big robots and CGI. Theres always people who cant get enough of big robots and CGI. And if it has CGI buildings collapsing there will be even more people like it.
Cant beat big robots+CGI+buildings falling down! Its so awesome!

According to a Variety article:

"Early tracking for the film is so far disappointing with audiences showing more interest in Sony Pictures’ sequel “Grown Ups 2,” which also opens that weekend. Some are comparing “Pacific Rim” to to Saban’s “Power Rangers” kids franchise or Japanese anime."

Part of the problem seems to be a marketing campaign that focused on revving up the hardcore fans, rather than reaching a broader audience for the $200 million-plus picture, as Variety explains in a separate piece:

"Warner’s marketing strategy has been to rev up core fans first, then expand from there. Del Toro’s appearances at last year’s Comic-Con and this year’s Wondercon, and the action-oriented trailers, have stoked the fanboys.... the film’s marketing must overcome the perception that “Pacific Rim” is “Transformers vs. Godzilla.”"

The commander in chief has to lay the smack down to his underlings. Let them know who's boss.

Big fan of both actors, Hunnam for Sons of Anarchy and Elba for, well, pretty much everything he does. Looking forward to this flick.

Can someone name a great movie Del Toro Directed other than Pan's labyrinth. I didn't think so. And, don't say hellboy just because its a comic book movie, those movies were terrible, the only notable thing being the art direction.
Sitterson - 6/26/2013, 10:19 AM
@darkbeefstakes Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, and Blade 2. Also, if you didn't like Hellboy you don't belong here.

As much as I want this movie to be awesome, and it could very well be. It will be a box office flop just like Guardians of the Galaxy. The only people who will want to go see it are the people who are all on this site. It might do well in the international markets but I don't think it will fare too well in America.
