EDITORIAL: Why I Don't Think The "Nolanverse" Should Be Ignored In BATMAN/SUPERMAN

I think most of us agree that it's time for a new take on The Dark Knight -- but does that mean ALL ties to Christopher Nolan's brilliant movies need to be severed? I think fans can "have their cake and eat it too" as it were when it comes to rebooting this character..

With the announcement of a brand new Batman in Ben Affleck, and a continuation of the story and universe established in Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel it's already pretty obvious that Warner Bros. are planning on sweeping Christopher Nolan's previous Bat-flicks under the rug, and rebooting the franchise; BUT, I'm not sure that's the best way to go.

Now don't get me wrong, I think a direct follow up to The Dark Knight Rises would be a big mistake, and I don't even want Ben Affleck to play the same character that Christian Bale did -- but there are ways to give us a new take, new tone, new universe even; without completely disregarding what came before.

Depending on how many Batman regulars will be used in the movie, Zack Snyder's Batman/Superman sequel will undoubtedly bring us a new cast for all of the established characters, and place them in an entirely new setting..and that's great, that's the way to go -- but does he have to completely disregard everything that happened in Nolan's movies? How can Snyder and WB reboot the franchise while maintaining ties to it? Well, it's actually very simple..they just leave it up to us!

Snyder and co. don't have to be a slave to the continuity established in the Nolanverse, they just don't have to completely contradict it either. This won't be a "reboot" in the traditional sense as we're not getting another origin story; Batman will be a "seasoned crimefighter", so who's to say the story can't be set after the events of TDKR..even if no direct association is ever mentioned? And -- if necessary -- a small connection can be made with something as simple as a single line, acting as a nod to the previous movies: Bruce could say "I tried passing on the mantle before, didn't work out so well", for example, but the possibilities are endless of course. Man Of Steel had a fairly similar tone to Nolan's Batman movies anyway, despite introducing actual superpowers, and who's to say that can't continue in Bruce Wayne's new world? Okay so the Dark Knight trilogy was "reality based", and didn't contain any supernatural/super-powered characters..so what! Just because we never saw any, doesn't mean they couldn't have existed.

I understand the need for a new take on Batman, all I'm saying is let's not pretend the previous movies didn't exist when delivering it. After all, just look at James Bond -- every actor brought something completely different to their interpretation of 007, and the movies even mixed up real-world, sci-fi, and supernatural elements while still being seen as "canon". Now if you weren't a fan of Nolan's movies I'm sure you're very happy that all ties will be severed, but if you loved them as much as I do wouldn't you want SOME element of those great stories to carry over? Or at the very least the option to believe that's the case by having it left ambiguous? That's just my take on it, please sound off in the usual place with yours.

SpecialKail - 9/4/2013, 9:18 AM
also, what lax said.
TheWolverine08 - 9/4/2013, 9:18 AM
Eh, disagree. Let the Nolan verse stay in the past.
LAXtremest - 9/4/2013, 9:20 AM
All the editorials trying to win that cash are all about Batman and Nolan.
campblood - 9/4/2013, 9:20 AM
no thanks keep that shit as far away from this as possible

" BANE CAN FEEL NO PAIN SO THAT MEANS HE CAN PUNCH THROUGH LOAD BEARING CONCRETE! "
JorEllinator - 9/4/2013, 9:21 AM
It's over, Ror. I loved it as much as the next guy and I think you could stretch the believability to the point where it can live in MoS continuity but I want a new take on Batman.
JoeMomma29 - 9/4/2013, 9:22 AM
Please leave the Nolan Universe out of this movie, it is time to move forward with a real DCU. We want powers etc....
campblood - 9/4/2013, 9:23 AM
I want clayface!!!
RorMachine - 9/4/2013, 9:24 AM
You can have a new take..you can have both!
IDKwhatToChoose - 9/4/2013, 9:25 AM
^^^ because the Nolan trilogy has such passionate fans. I think they need to just forget about that. If they keep it that means Bane still dies like a b&*&* and Bruce's legs are weak and his body is breaking down. I want the Batman from the comics. I want the bad a$$ ninja flippin detective that is the epitome of what a human can be. I just feel in ALL the previous film incarnations of bats he has been watered down.
RorMachine - 9/4/2013, 9:25 AM
YOU CAN HAVE IT ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!:)
GliderMan - 9/4/2013, 9:27 AM
I COMPLETLEY AGREE!! This is EXACTLY what I've been trying to say!!

You can continue the story so easily while still getting the REALISTIC, badass Batman we all want.

@RorMachine, you the man! :D
supermarioworldE - 9/4/2013, 9:27 AM
I don't like the idea of a full reboot so quickly after the last movie either, but Nolan is done with his batman universe. We gotta move on.
Indy - 9/4/2013, 9:27 AM
leave Nolans Movies alone. All they need to do is keep quality of movie making. They see how it can be done good so try not go backwards.
Christuffer - 9/4/2013, 9:28 AM
They should allude to it. Maybe make a reference to the effect of: "The Joker is just a mad dog." See what I did there?
SpecialKail - 9/4/2013, 9:28 AM
i think nolan unfriended ror on facebook.
blkyank - 9/4/2013, 9:29 AM
Affleck should have the freedom to craft his own unique take on Batman that doesn't have to honor anything Bale did with it.

Bale and Nolan walked away from Batman, maybe the fans of their version of the character should follow that example too.
GliderMan - 9/4/2013, 9:30 AM
Also, I wouldn't consider it "Nolan Universe"... all you're doing is letting the story progress.

GliderMan - 9/4/2013, 9:32 AM
You wouldn't be dependent on any previous take of the character. Hell, just reboot like you normally would, but continue the story from the previous film.

THREE YEARS is to dadgum soon for full-on reboot. It was released just over a year ago for crying out loud!
SpecialKail - 9/4/2013, 9:33 AM
its not a spinoff its a standalone.

its also called world building and good storytelling.

a throw away line isnt good storytelling. lets say they use the line "i tried passing the mantle once, it didnt work out so well."

well what happened? i want to know.

did john blake become jason todd? murdered by the joker.

id watch that.

If you're really heartset on having it tie to nolanverse, you'd have affleck be Batman III.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/4/2013, 9:34 AM
No more Nolan Universe. Anything similar would just seem like it is copying it.
SpecialKail - 9/4/2013, 9:34 AM
its not a reboot, its earth two!
Dev7 - 9/4/2013, 9:35 AM
I was right! This Batfleck will suffer many more editorials.
SpecialKail - 9/4/2013, 9:36 AM
if you really want nolanverse to be canon, then do flashpoint. there you go. it all happened, but its different now.
JoJo1982 - 9/4/2013, 9:36 AM
The only thing from nolanverse the future movies should have is it's serious tone. That's the 1 thing I feel marvel movies are starting to go overboard with and with Superman/aliens now in the picture, the whole keep it reality based has been thrown out the window(which is good).
malreyn - 9/4/2013, 9:37 AM
Disagree.

The Nolan films showed a fairly limited Batman. It worked for two out of three movies (IMO) within the context of those stories/that universe. Even implying that there's a connection between the previous and next puts a ball and chain around the ankle of the next Batman.
GliderMan - 9/4/2013, 9:37 AM
Hey guys, please go check out my idea for a Justice League movie. It was written before Batman/Superman was announced, so obviously it will have to be changed accordingly.

Thanks!
Ranger14 - 9/4/2013, 9:38 AM
An article over adding a single line to a film to tie it into the Nolanverse? Mmmmkay....I guess that wasn't worth the read. :-p
wcwpoet - 9/4/2013, 9:38 AM
No sorry it just wouldn't make sense to me. The Nolan Batverse just wouldn't fit into the Man Of Steel universe. But fine even if you wanted to go that route, Batman struggled to take down Bane, how could he even remotely stack up to this version of Superman. Even now I kind of question it seeing how Snyder did the fights in MoS which were great, but the kryptonian speed already makes it a lopsided miss-match.
Jer3miah - 9/4/2013, 9:39 AM
@IDKwhattochoose
Yeah, because WB casting Affleck is exactly how we are going to get a ninja flipping Batman from the comics. Exactly why they blew off Scott Adkins, the only one who could.
TYLERWINN - 9/4/2013, 9:39 AM
Wow who cares?
charlie2094 - 9/4/2013, 9:40 AM
I think this might confuse general audiences too much. I think it's a fine idea, but it just means the likes of Bane, Ra's, Joker etc have all been used...think a reboot is best, but keep a similar tone and such from the Nolan films. Don't say too much about Batman himself in MOS2, so he could play like Nolan's Batman, but leave it to a new solo Bat-film to establish who he really is...
GliderMan - 9/4/2013, 9:42 AM
Guys, it's not about the Nolan universe!! You can do the 'reboot' however you want, the Batman in Batman/Superman doesn't even have to act in any way like the Batman in TDK trilogy.

Do Batman like the badass he is. Just continue the story.
malreyn - 9/4/2013, 9:46 AM
I guess Jer3miah has never heard of stunt doubles or extensive combat and gymnastic training on the part of the lead actors before the movie gets filmed...
NBAfanaddict - 9/4/2013, 9:47 AM
Josh vs Ror:

FIGHT!

If they wanted, Batman/Superman could have a little "Hulk-The Incredible Hulk" type connection to the Nolanverse. Not explicitly saying its connected, and giving clear indications it's difference, but maybe a small nod. If they wanted too. I personally have no real opinion on the matter.
Jaspion - 9/4/2013, 9:48 AM
@GliderMan We all want??

I want a fantasy Batman, but taken seriously.
GliderMan - 9/4/2013, 9:50 AM
@Jaspion you can do that too.
JoJo1982 - 9/4/2013, 9:51 AM
wcwpoet - 9/4/2013, 9:38 AM

Even now I kind of question it seeing how Snyder did the fights in MoS which were great, but the kryptonian speed already makes it a lopsided miss-match.

Yeah, that one time i think Synder could've used what he is known for in those parts and that is "slow mo action scenes". It could've played well in man of steel
SoundWave - 9/4/2013, 9:51 AM
No no no! Nolanverse MUST BE ignored!
We need new origin, new Jocker, new Bane with VENOM in "mexican wrestrel" mask, not thus adfull stupid muzzle looks like underpants. New Batman, new stories, RED HOOD Jocker begining, and etc. NO to NOlanverse. All new! Fantastic Batman in Fantastic new Movieverse!!!
