It would be [frick]ing awesome if one episode opened with a small flashback to the Targaryen conquest and we saw... BALERION THE BLACK DREAD.

You could call these

Dragaryen(s) after Targaryen
or
Dothrako(s) after Dothraki
or
Waeneryn(s) after Daenerys

These dragons oddly work with only four limbs. Smaug works best with six in my opinion. However, these dragons in GoT are so well done they look real half the damn time.

Smaug would desolate all of them.

Smaug only has four limbs: his legs and wings. It doesn't make sense for dragons to have arms as well as wings because that means they have 6 limbs altogether. Nearly all dragons nowadays are depicted with wings and no arms. It makes the most sense.

That's pretty damn cool. However, SMAUG is still the most fantastic dragon ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragons are supposed to have 4 limbs and 2 wings. That's how they've been traditionally depicted. Lately the trend has been to turn them into wyverns for some reason. Game of Thrones makes it work. Smaug in The Hobbit really didn't. The simple fact is Smaug was completely changed in between the 1st and 2nd movies for some reason, when it would've been better to leave well enough alone. Jackson turned him into a slithering, Japanese-esque wyvern when the real thing (i.e. how he was in the book) would've been so much better.

At least Game of Thrones has the balls to do it's own thing and stick to it. Add the impeccable CGI, practical effects, convincing sets, and on-location shooting, and it's the best thing on TV right now, while giving plenty of movies a run for their money.

Drogon > Smaug

And I'm sure people will whine about how the number of limbs on a dragon isn't a big deal...but then they'll turn around and complain about Spider-Man's suit from the 1st TASM, or Captain America having a blue shield for part of TWS, or his undercover suit, or stupid stuff like that. Point is, the LOTR books are like my comic books, and unnecessary minor or major changes drive me nuts.

For a TV show that looks very very good and "real" in a way.

@Sauron

Given the size of Smaug and how intelligent and cunning he is, the six limbs in total make him look more powerful and grand. With Game of Thrones, the dragons are more animal and therefore it works better for them in my opinion. It depends really. With Smaug six feels right. With the animal like Ennos/Westeros ones, four works more. However, the GoT dragons look like they are really there. [frick]ing amazing visuals and CGI.

@Kyos...it got a rise in anticipation of SauronsBANE1's hate of anything Hobbit...apparently even the best thing from it.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 2/23/2014, 8:45 AM
Completely agree, MAC. Smaug isn't supposed to be as animalistic as, say, the spiders in Mirkwood or the Eagles (the movie Eagles at least. In the books they actually talk and have human characteristics). Smaug's supposed to be smart, devious, greedy, basically every flaw in the human race embodied in a dragon. Making him into a wyvern really takes away from that, IMO.

The dragons in GoT are incredible though. The CGI at the very end of the 1st season was a bit suspect (understandably), but it's gotten better and better since then until the CGI in GoT looks and feels better than most movies. Including the terrible video-game asthetic of The Hobbit movies, IMO.

Don't flatter yourself, Facade, I'd hate on anything in The Hobbit whether or not you happened to comment on the article!

I don't deny that Smaug was the best part of Desolation, don't get me wrong. It's just so fitting that even the best part of the movie had so many flaws in it as well, IMO. Same thing with the best part of the first movie: the riddles in the dark with Gollum. Both instances were good, but could've been SO much better.
