Evan Goldberg Explains His Vision For PREACHER

While speaking to Collider, Goldberg discusses his plans to bring (along with Seth Rogen) Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's gloriously messed up comic series to the small screen for an AMC tv show. The plan is to be as faithful to the comic as possible, but they'll "need to change some stuff".

After several attempts to adapt Garth Ennis' controversial comic series for the big screen, fans were delighted to hear that we'd actually be getting an AMC tv show instead. A while back it was announced that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg would pen the script for the project, with Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin on board as executive producer and showrunner. Now Goldberg speaks to Collider about how they plan to tackle the adaptation, assuring that while they intend to stick as closely to the source material as possible, a few things will have to be altered.

“We just had a meeting with AMC and Garth Ennis, who’s the writer, and we all kind of seemed to agree that we’re gonna stay as true to the comic as we can. We need to change some stuff but we’re not gonna change much, I hope. We’re just gonna do a little more of the preamble instead of doing flashbacks and restructure how we dole out the information a little, but we’re gonna [do the] same characters, same story, same ending. We’re gonna try to stick to Preacher as best we can. We’re making it with Sam Catlin who did Breaking Bad, and so he might tell me I’m wrong about all of this and that the real way to do it is different because he’s much smarter and better at all this than I am. But we’re gonna try to stick to what it is as best we can.”

Great news I'm sure you'll agree. Goldberg also comments on the decision to adapt Preacher as a tv show instead of a movie, and suggests that the love triangle (though that's a strange thing to call it in my opinion) between Jesse Custer, Tulip and Cassidy will be the focus. "It’s too big; you can’t do that in a movie. It’s just too big. You’ve gotta learn the characters, it’s all about a love triangle and you need to grow with them and see the woman swayed one way or the other, and in a movie you just can’t accomplish all that.” More at the link below.

Been waiting for this, one of my favorite stories up there with Sandman
WorstUserNameEver - 3/9/2014, 2:49 PM
Preacher is up there with Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns as seminal moments in comic books at the end of the last century.
marvel72 - 3/9/2014, 2:49 PM
this & constantine are the only dc shows i'm interested in,i'll watch a few episodes of the flash but i'm not expecting much from cw.

sandman would work better as a tv show than a movie.
GliderMan - 3/9/2014, 2:52 PM
Sounds extremely blasphemous.
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 2:56 PM
there's so much going on in preacher that obviously things will be trimmed down. i would really like them to spend some time with jesse growing up with his fricked-up "family". i'm hoping the saint of killers part won't be scrapped, but i can see where they would choose not to include it. the relationship and everything between jesse, tulip, and cassidy is the heart of the story, so i'm hoping everything there stays relatively the same
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 2:57 PM
oh, and a bill hicks cameo

RorMachine - 3/9/2014, 2:58 PM
GliderMan, yeah...and then some! If you're in any way religious I'd skip it...unless you're very open minded of course ..but they don't tend to go hand in hand do they?:)
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:03 PM
yeah, there's some sensitive quasi-religious stuff. but there's also a whole lot more going on. vampires. vietnam. john wayne, kurt cobain. orgies. sex detectives. a dude with a butthole for a face. voodoo. cannibals
Growler - 3/9/2014, 3:05 PM
Preacher is my favourite comic-book story in over 40 years of reading them and I'll cheerfully admit that when I first heard that Rogen and Goldberg were onboard, I was more than a little sceptical. However, the more I hear about their vision for the project, the more optimistic I become.

It makes perfect sense to tidy up the timeline a little as the series is all over the place at times with flashbacks and origins.

Bring on Jesus DeSade!
Comedian03 - 3/9/2014, 3:05 PM
Never read any of the source material, but the premise sounds really cool.

Plus Seth Rogen being involved definitely peaks my interest. I think the guys a lot more talented then people give him credit for.
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:09 PM
I loved every aspect of this story but I feel like JESSE still needs to be the focus. I don't need a never ending drama will they wont they thing. I wanna see the meat man. Twisted shit like that. The bend religious stuff. The surreal western aspects. The love triangle is prolly the only aspect of the story they could go a lil lighter on in my opinion. Outta everything?

dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:11 PM
Arse face needs to be done horrendous justice
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:13 PM
it's not really JUST a love triangle thing. it's friendship through [frick]ed-up, normal human things between people. respect. friendship. trust. not so much a rom-com. that's selling it short
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:13 PM
The horror, gore, perversion, western vibe needs to be unsullied to be a true adaption. I honestly don't know if it can be done.
leftcoastpunk - 3/9/2014, 3:15 PM
@Ror- I don't remember it being so much along the way. The ending is about as blasphemous as you can get, and did make me pretty squeamish, but the story as a whole is done so well and I can see where he's coming from with it so I accept it for what it is.
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:17 PM
That's what I'm saying outta everything? Boiling it down to a love triangle is an odd statement
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:19 PM
no no, not boiling it down. but it is the heart of the story. it was an awesome ride, but if you remember the ending...yeah, there's where it hits
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:21 PM
The story of JESSE and the WORD are the main aspects but I'm glad the characters will stay the same but as I said I wanna see more before I get fully behind it but I am hopeful
MatTaylorX - 3/9/2014, 3:23 PM
Amazing story. Really hope they do it justice. But I will always believe that this should have been done with HBO.
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:25 PM
the angel/demon baby is the starting premise of the story, yes

what the story is really all about:

dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:28 PM
Eh that's any story there will be the romantic aspect. And of curse I get the love triangle doesn't mean I want the focus on that. I want them to push the envelope with the CONTENT of the stories
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:28 PM
All the horror, gore, perversion etc!
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:29 PM
Don't make it PC it's not supposed to be
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:34 PM
If it's made to focus on the characters more than the stories actual content they're nurturing the story really
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:35 PM
oh, yeah. fer sure. all that stuff is really great, too. but there's a reason why this picture is on the cover of the last trade

dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:36 PM
Will his head still be cut like a cock?
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:37 PM
the story's actual content includes the characters
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:37 PM
These kind of things bc then it stops being unique and becomes episodic and mundane. Like a lot of tv that is geared toward mass appeal. It can't criticize Catholicism as much.
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:38 PM
wub :)
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:38 PM
The inbred messiah?
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:43 PM
when the mutant guy wanted herr starr to wipe (wub) him :)
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:47 PM
Just the shear [frick]ing aspect that an inbred messiah is there! He is an actual concept that is seen, that he is in the story. That crap doesn't get thrown out or presupposed. I don't care if tulip still has her tumultuous past or if her and Cassidy become drug addicts holed up for a year? The story is the surrealness without that it's not itself
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:48 PM
Arse face has to be hideous. Not just there for a few minutes
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:49 PM
Without him it ceases being PREACHER and he's a small aspect
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:51 PM
there's real, emotional weight with the friendship-and sometimes not so friendly friendship-of the 3. the story is a fun ride with bang, bang, shoot-em ups and stuff. i'm not saying i wouldn't like to see that stuff, because...[frick] yeah, i would. with the update, you will see that goldberg and i are of the same mindset. it really is the heart of the story
dellamorte1872 - 3/9/2014, 3:51 PM
I'm glad they're keeping this and that. But I wanna make sure they're keeping everything not just snippets
Jollem - 3/9/2014, 3:52 PM
if "inbred messiah" isn't a selling point...i don't know what is :)
