Marvel Movie Meltdown: SFX Talks To Kevin Feige

This month's issue of British Sci-Fi mag SFX has a huge special on the upcoming movies from Marvel, including revealing interviews with the cast and crew, as well as thoughts from the characters' original creators. There is also a pretty big reveal from Kevin Feige regarding a certain Green Goliath...

Its a real milestone for CBM's at the moment with a never before attempted multi-cross over series of movies, culminating with The Avengers in 2012. With Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America to hit screens first, fans are wondering how all of these dots will be connected, and which of the great characters/storylines from the comics will be followed or make the final cut. SFX magazine have lots of cool interviews and quotes from the various people involved with bringing these movies to life. I took this interview with Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige as he talks about what we can expect from the upcoming movies..

First he talks about the challenge of putting these stories together on the big screen...

"I get to cheat!" he says. "Because its been done before in comics. We might be changing how the dots connect a little bit, but its that experience of reading comics that we're trying to bring to the movies, for people that have never even opened a comic book before. I've said a million times that the best part of reading a comic is that any character can pop into another characters story. That wasn't possible on-screen until Iron Man."

We already know that with the upcoming movies, we will be introduced to more characters as well as seeing the existing ones gel together. Feige gives his take on how that will happen...

"Its fun now and we are introducing some new characters in these films. But its not about cramming in lots of new people ..thats sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel, adding too many characters"

"My only concern is that when we launch a franchise.. whichever characters franchise that may be, it should stand on its own two feet. With Iron Man being the first one out of the gate, thank goodness thats what happend. Everyone loved it. Its our job to do the same with Thor and Captain America two years from now, so by the time The Avengers comes in 2012 its not just a team super hero movie with a bunch of characters with powers, its three people, four including Hulk , five including Nick Fury-who you have seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time."

Yes, Feige says that The Hulk will definitely be a part of The Avengers. We never really doubted it, but its nice to have it confirmed. Still no word on whether Ed Norton will reprise the role though. All he says is..

"...I think there's a chance, its certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can."

I think its fair to say that most fans are worried about the very fantasy oriented story of Thor , integrating into the sci-fi type world of Iron Man and The Avengers. SFX put those worries to Feige...

"No, [I dont think it will be difficult] because thats what Thor is. We're doing the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Walt Simonson/J Michael Straczynski Thor. We're not doing the blow the dust of the old Norse book in your library Thor. And in the Thor of the Marvel universe there's a race called The Asgardians, and we're linked through this tree of life that we're unaware of. Its real science, but we don't know about it yet. The Thor movie is about teaching people that."

Thats all for now. But if you can, be sure to pick up a copy of this months SFX, there is loads more cool Marvel goodness.

cool interview.
bsprecher - 1/26/2010, 6:42 PM
Yay, Ror! Thanks, bro! Transcribing is a biz-natch, isn't it? I interviewed Feige at SDCC during the round-table with Downey, Johansson and the others and...I didn't have my recorder on! What a rookie!
InTylerWeTrust - 1/26/2010, 6:44 PM
Good to hear that Hulk will be in Avengers. We did sort of figure it, but like you said Ror, confirmation is good.

I just hope Norton comes back.
I - 1/26/2010, 6:46 PM
I kinda knew this was coming. Sweet! Good stuff Ror!
ecksmanfan - 1/26/2010, 6:48 PM
Great stuff! Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
RorMachine - 1/26/2010, 6:55 PM
Cheers guys..and yes Brent/Multi, its a pain in the arse! This wasn't too much though, although I was going to add some more stuff(thoughts from the creators etc), because it wasn't that revealing I didn't bother, maybe 2mo!

Multi, how much we talkin?

Tyler, yeah I guess it wasn't really in any doubt, but you never know how these things play out sometimes. Pity he couldn't confirm Norton's involvement alright.
ATOMbomb - 1/26/2010, 6:58 PM

Minotauro - 1/26/2010, 7:50 PM
@Tyler & Ror - you want Norton back?

Skyh00k - 1/26/2010, 7:59 PM
InTylerWeTrust - 1/26/2010, 8:08 PM
Mino: Yeah...much like everyone else...

Multi: I have a feeling he'll come back, he's probably going to be offered a hefty sum of $$$, but there is something in the back of my mind that tells me he might not, since he doesn't seem to be one of those mainstream blockbuster actors. But I did say that before he was cast in TIH...
Hawksblueyes - 1/26/2010, 8:11 PM
Ror: Awsome find. I think the biggest news here is not the Hulk. We were all aware of that, he's mentioned it before. The big news is NO ULTIMATE THOR.

We're doing the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Walt Simonson/J Michael Straczynski Thor.

That made my day!!!!!
Ugh - 1/26/2010, 8:13 PM
Makes me think of why they casted unknowns for some of the heavy hitters. Keep the budget from ballooning up and having the talent overshadow the movie.
Hawksblueyes - 1/26/2010, 8:23 PM
Multi: I think I just wiped a genuine tear of joy from my eyes.;)
JoshWilding - 1/26/2010, 8:29 PM
"...its three people, four including Hulk , five including Nick Fury-who you have seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time."

Huh, I wonder if that means no Hawkeye/Giant Man/Wasp!? That would be a real pity but I can understand them wanting to save characters like that (so they could introduce them properly) for future Avengers movies!
RorMachine - 1/26/2010, 8:30 PM
Hawks, I didn't think he ever flat out said it..I remember him being asked about it in interviews and saying something like

"Hulk appears in the Avengers comics"..and stuff, but I could be mistaken..anyway, now we know for sure...sure:)

Yeah the Thor news is great, although, don't be surprised if a few Ultimate elements creep in to earth bound Thor( I hope they do anyway)
airbeyonder18 - 1/26/2010, 8:32 PM
Yea for Hulk!
Hawksblueyes - 1/26/2010, 8:36 PM
Ror: I hope they don't, as far as the way he looks and the way he acts. His appeal to me through the years has been the fact that he is a God and people don't exactly know how to take him.

He doesn't have to fit in.

Now I would like to see a little of the Ultimates in that no one believes he is actualy Thor until something huge happens. They all think he's nuts.
RorMachine - 1/26/2010, 8:44 PM
Well, I hope the look is a mix of Ultimate and classic when he gets to earth. I mean, cmon, movies ain't comics, if he's flying around with full red cape, winged helmet Viking regalia its gonna look a bit silly..and if you don't believe me check out The Incredible Hulk Returns Tv movie. I also like the is he a god/or is he a lunatic thing from The Ultimates, so a bit of a nod to that would be nice.
InTylerWeTrust - 1/26/2010, 8:46 PM
Josh: That sucks. Hawkeye and Hank should definitely be in there, more so than Wasp. I hope they reconsider that and include them, I mean, what a cock tease with the rumor about Hawkeye being in Thor and played by Jeremy Renner.
JoshWilding - 1/26/2010, 8:58 PM
TYLER: I agree! I mean, I could almost cope without Wasp/Giant Man (but as they're original Avengers it would be really disappointing) but after all the buzz about Hawkeye, it would be even worse if he wasnt included!

I guess that even if the movie is as long as 2 1/2 hours, they have to deal with uniting the main three and having to explain the origins of characters like Hank Pym might take too long - saying that though, The Ultimates introduced Hank and Jan pretty quickly so the movie really could do the same!

I know Favreau said sometime ago that he wasnt using Iron Man 2 as a prologue to The Avengers (not his exact words but something like it) but I would've thought it was the perfect movie to introduce a character like Hank!

MULTI: Yeah, that makes a lot more sense and it eliminates having to include a long winded origin story for Hawkeye - as long as the character retains his regular 616 personality then I'd be more than happy to see the Ultimate version!

UHawk
InTylerWeTrust - 1/26/2010, 9:00 PM
Multi: I don't mind Hawkeye being an agent for Fury, just so long as he keeps his 616 cocky sense of humor. Otherwise, he's just SHIELD Agent # 3. He should be a secondary character in Avengers IMO, then get expanded in a sequel, like you said. But he deserves to be in the first one too.
Hawksblueyes - 1/26/2010, 9:03 PM
Multi: My point exactly. All I want from The Ultimates is the fact that people don't believe he is who he says at first.

As for Hawkeye as long as he has the 616 personality I don't care what they do with him. His smart ass personality is classic. And he will be introduced soon, I'm sure of it. Renners denial sure sounded like he simply revealed too much too soon.

I still say if they can make Spider Man and Supermans costumes look good on screen, they can make just about any costume look good.

I think this one would not only look good, but be intimidating as all Hell.

JoshWilding - 1/26/2010, 9:15 PM
MULTI: I'd have no problem with that - I just dont want to see him turn into what Jeph Loeb did with the character! (a crappier version of Bullseye) I always liked Millar's characterization of Ultimate Hawkeye so I'd even be happy with that personality as long as he at least has a shred of the regular Clint's humour and cockiness!

And yeah, I couldnt agree with you more about Renner! I saw The Hurt Locker for the first time last week and everything about the guys just screams Hawkeye! Plus, he looks the part even in the original costume!

hawks

(good job I cant enter that art competition because thats about as far as my artistic skill go, lol!)
InTylerWeTrust - 1/26/2010, 9:30 PM
I do like the idea of Hawkeye being a member of Fury's squad of agents, it's a good way to give him a set-up that could easily be expanded at a later point. I have no problem with that. I would only have a problem if he didn't keep his trademark cockiness, because then he just becomes random SHIELD agent # 3, like I said.

But hell yes to Renner as Hawkeye. I've watched The Hurt Locker about 4 times since I bought the DVD, and each time I've gotten more convinced that Renner should be Barton. He is an excellent dramatic actor, but can also play the like-able smartasses perfectly, and Clint is basically a like-able smartass. Renner deserves a big breakthrough into the mainstream with a role in Avengers. I absolutely love the scene in THL when he's trying to get the bomb off the guy who is pleading with the soldiers, and Renner just keeps shouting "I can't do it! I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" That scene gave me chills with the intensity of the scene and the intensity of Renner's performance.

Renner for Hawkeye :)

JoshWilding - 1/26/2010, 9:35 PM
MULTI: As much as I enjoyed Avatar, if that movie beats The Hurt Locker for Best Picture at the Oscars (providing they're both nominated) it'll be a sad day for cinema! :)

Its funny you should say that about him playing Steve because after seeing his performance in that movie, I also though that he'd more than likely make an excellent Captain America!

If Marvel have the sense to sign him up as Hawkeye though, they'll have an actor in their hands talented enough to give them a whole new franchise (I'd be more than happy to see a solo Hawkeye movie!) And you're right - the last thing we need is for Fox to mis-cast him in some terrible cameo role in whatever awful X-Men related movie they churn out next!

TYLER: Once again, I completely agree! Man, that scene you mention should be enough to get Renner nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars!
JoshWilding - 1/26/2010, 9:41 PM
It would also be great if they were to introduce Carol Danvers in The Avengers - even a small cameo of a character like that would be brilliant! (as long as she's played by the stunning Yvonne Strahovski!)

Ms.Marvel2
nxwmxn - 1/26/2010, 10:06 PM
I'm slightly worried about Thor, I think Ben Foster would have been a better pick to play Loki...I really hope they can pull it off, Thor is either going to be amazing, or its going to Daredevil its way to the 5.99 bin.
MrSuperheromoviefan - 1/26/2010, 10:35 PM
I haven't read in this nothing about Giant Man or Wasp. Are they going to put them in the Avengers movie?
SciFiNut - 1/26/2010, 10:55 PM
Awesome news. Here's to hoping Norton comes back as Banner - I enjoyed THE INCREDIBLE HULK as much as I did Iron Man!
Darantino - 1/27/2010, 1:29 AM
Hulk happy!
Joker08 - 1/27/2010, 1:57 AM
Okay, so if it's official - and Norton's back, I want Brad Pitt for Cap... While I think there may be better choices, I don't think he's bad; in fact I think he'd be great. But my main motives in choosing him are rooted in selfish nostalgia, I really just want a Fight Club reunion.

I know I'm alone here, I just want to see Tyler and the Narrator together once more :)
Joker08 - 1/27/2010, 2:56 AM
@Kes: Seriously? Do you know who off hand?
1chris2 - 1/27/2010, 3:31 AM
great news. i hope to see another hulk sequel as well, with the leader in it.
MisterFixit - 1/27/2010, 5:24 AM
1chris2@ and you @All about the Hulk sequel he also said he thinks there is a possibilty "that would be post-Avengers". And about the others marvel future projects he said: "I love Doctor Strange. Ant-Man is like Whiplash - one of those chracters where you're like, 'Really?' that we've got a fun story with. I've always wanted to do something with Black Panther. I think what Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction have done with Iron Fist lately is great, and the Iron Fist mythology opens up a whole other part to us. I'd love to break into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe even more- it's kind of there in 'Thor.' J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' got me jonesing to do that. It's what I grew up on - 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars.' I want to do a big space epic. And we've got them in Marvel."
LuckyKyd - 1/27/2010, 10:22 AM
This is a great article consisting of even greater news. Really sounds like Feige knows where he is going with this, could not be more confident about the future movies of Marvel Entertainment, when he is supervising.

Oh and HELL YES to Renner as Hawkeye, he would hang everybody out to dry and hit bullseye with his performance.
JLAvenger23 - 1/27/2010, 12:06 PM
Great news!! As I read in other early article here about the Hulk in Avengers movie,I hope they don't blow it, he is not a villain really, just misunderstood like many of Marvel characters. But for now let's sit and wiat, I expect they make a great job with this material, u can see they're trying to!!

Excelsior!!
Joker08 - 1/27/2010, 12:40 PM
@teabag: It's not about what he looks like in that pic - because I'm sure he wouldn't look like that in the movie. That's a pic of him from Inglorious Basterds and not much has been changed from his clothes - I just wanted to find something to show that he still has it and that he isn't too old (unless, obviously, they really want someone young). The point is, I just want a FC reunion one way or another :)
dancingmonkey08 - 1/27/2010, 2:21 PM
Nice one, Ror! I absolutely love SFX magazine and their articles are always brilliant so I will definetly be buying the next edition if its all about the Marvel movies

@Josh @ InTylerWeTrust
Damn right! We need to see Hank & Janet in the Avengers. In every version of the Avengers origins, they are always founding members! Why not in the movies too!? They should introduce them as scientists who came up with the Pym particles who use them to be superheroes and this would also be a way to test with the public if they will be popular or not for their own individual movie!

Although, no offence to you guys but Hawkeye would be one too many characters, leave him for a sequel. There is not one comic where he was a founding member of the Avengers. My idea was have a movie which shows Clint Barton's life from orphan who joins the circus to being trained by Swordsman & Trickshot to eventually being beaten up and forced to flee by them when he refuses to commit a crime. Without a purpose, Clint watches a news report about the events of the Avengers and this motivates him to use to his skills to fight crime. But he gets into trouble over it and is perceived to be a criminal by the public which he tries to overcome. But then he discovers Swordsman & Trickshot are planning a huge crime which endanger lives and he has to prevent it. Then when he beats his old mentors, the Avengers offer him a place on the team which means he could be in a Avengers sequel. It would be too early to stick him into the first Avengers movie. The Hawkeye movie could look at how a normal person becomes a superhero by being motivated by other real superheroes in their world. BTW, awesome idea Josh to having Hawkeye as a mixture of the 616 & Ultimate Hawkeye. That would be brilliant and the perfect characterisation for Hawkeye in a movie. Maybe in an individual movie, he could wear his 616 costume as a proper superhero and then wear his Ultimate one, when he is working with the Avengers
CorndogBurglar - 1/27/2010, 3:05 PM
@ ror

i don't know man, the fact that they mention Hulk separate from the other three makes me wonder. they mention him, but they mention him in the capacity of Nick Fury also. so that makes me wonder if he'll be a full blown field member, or a side character.

although, i have no doubt that he'll be there, and then either get controlled by someone, or just outright go on a rampage. i'm certain the avengers will have to fight hulk. its happened that way in both the 616 universe and ultimate universe!
ngu13 - 1/27/2010, 7:05 PM
after avengers to keep the hulk going they should do a live planet hulk ..i just watched the cartoon film its ggreat ,, they could do alot with the hulk then ... we all want to see hulk smash big time ...
Pym - 1/28/2010, 12:42 AM
"Errrbody who want 2 see me in this film saaaay hooooooo!"

(( Hoooooo! ))

Pym OUT.
Wonderwes - 1/28/2010, 2:10 PM
He just says that those 5 you've seen before are coming together. He never says they are the only ones.

I wouldn't be surprised at a Black Panther, after the cartoon series seems to have some success. Vision might need too much background. Pym and Hawkeye would be awesome.

Gotta have some chicks as well. Warbird, Scarlet Witch, or Wasp, at the very least...
