Batman 3 Title Revealed, Villain Will NOT be The Riddler!

In an exclusive interview with La Times' Hero Complex, Christopher Nolan reveals the title for the follow up to TDK, the movie won't be in 3D, and that The Riddler won't be the much speculated upon villain..

Well, lets not beat around the bush. The subtitle for Nolan's third Batman will be..

The Dark Knight Rises.

I'm pretty sure I heard someone suggest a very similar title as fan fic once! Anyway, there you go. I for one like it. Speaking to La Times' Geoff Boucher, Nolan added..

“We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones,”

These characters are obviously Batman himself, Alfred, Jim Gordon, Lucious Fox among other possibilities. But could one be Harvey Dent/Two Face? Its unlikely since Nolan has already said that he was dead as a dodo at the end of TDK, but who knows. If Nolan reconsiders, it wouldn't be a huge stretch to make the "funeral" some type of tribute to Dent and have him recover from his fall, all Two Face now of course. And as Boucher rightly points out, Nolan has said in the past that the title The Dark Knight referred as much to Dent as it did Batman. Nolan also said that he has convinced WB to allow him to film in IMAX as was the case with the previous films, and not go the popular 3D route.

Next Boucher asked if it might be possible that the villain would be a new one created just for the movie to which Nolan simply laughed, but didn't confirm or deny. There has been rumor of this before. But one thing Nolan did reveal is that despite many fans believing it was a foregone conclusion that we would see Edward Nigma bother Batman in the next movie, the villain will NOT be The Riddler. This certainly narrows down the possibilities. But really, its almost easier to just go with who we know it won't be at this point rather than speculate. No Riddler, No Mr Freeze, and I'm going to go ahead and assume we can scratch Man-Bat off that list too! With news of Nolan's search for a female lead breaking, and now this, it seems the notoriously tight lipped director is beginning open up a bit. Lets hope more news will follow soon.

The Dark Knight Rises is expected to hit theaters on July 20, 2012.

Hmmmmm I really hoped he wouldn't use "The Dark Knight" again
ScottPilgrim - 10/27/2010, 6:59 AM
Looking at track record Scarecrow only TRULY turns up at the end of 'Batman Begins' and leaves very quickly.

Two-Face turns up towards the end of 'The Dark Knight' and leaves fairly quickly.

SOOOOO What I'm saying is that Two-Face may turn up at the beginning of Batman 3. Even though I'd prefer Two-Face to turn up at the end of the film, so that the public reveal that Harvey Dent is still alive would allow Batman to come out of exile so that Batman can prowl Gotham in the open in Batman 4.
whoa123 - 10/27/2010, 7:03 AM
I actually like the title! But kinda sad that he isn't going to use The Riddler haha
FrankGarret - 10/27/2010, 7:06 AM
Really don't see Nolan creating a villain.
I was expecting something more like Gotham but Rises shall do.

As for the Riddler, I'm okay with that. He could've worked, but with Ledger's death, he could've as easily looked like a Joker surrogate.

And let it not be said that I'm ashamed of self promotion, checkout my Batman III fan cast
Twenty23Three - 10/27/2010, 7:09 AM
I'm glad its official that riddler won't appear now, I had had enough of people going "the guy in TDK is the riddler so he the next villain", utter bullshit. Title is a bit weak for me but I don't care too much about that.
jazzman - 10/27/2010, 7:13 AM
@RorMachine

nice post cant wait for the movie

to me "The Dark Knight Rises" seems like a play on "The Dark Knight Returns" imo

hoping for Black Mask or someone else. The Riddler make sense if his not in the sequel cause The Joker already did things like The Riddler in The Dark Knight.
Denn1s - 10/27/2010, 7:17 AM
no riddler? why?
antonio - 10/27/2010, 7:17 AM
anything "gotham" would have been great but "the dark knight rises" makes sense in the context of the story & trilogy. wow...no riddler. i guess none of us saw that coming, despite heavy speculation. however, i am more stocked than ever to watch this!.
JoshWilding - 10/27/2010, 7:23 AM
Damn, you just beat me to it ROR! :) That's a very interesting choice of title. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and now The Dark Knight Rises. It'll be interesting to see what significance the "Rises" part ends up having. As for the villain, I'd rather they not create one but I'm not too bothered that we wont see The Riddler as we sort of got a little of that character in the Joker IMO.
AlReg - 10/27/2010, 7:25 AM
Glad we won't see Riddler and I like the title it makes me think we see some victory for Batman in one way or another.
CaptainQuirk - 10/27/2010, 7:26 AM
Success!

Catwoman seems like a definite now....

Talulah Riley - Selina Kyle

....and I reckon Black Mask will be the other, he's completely relevant to the gangster/mob storyline.

Tom Hardy - Roman Sionis
antonio - 10/27/2010, 7:31 AM
marion cotillard for catwoman if catwoman will be the lead female charecter! thumbs up if you agree.
CorndogBurglar - 10/27/2010, 7:34 AM
THANK GOD NO RIDDLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Black Mask and Catwoman all the way!
AverageCitizen99 - 10/27/2010, 7:36 AM
Awesome job Ror! :)

Don't worry JoshW, there's always next time buddy! I was surprised by the title. I was expecting something along the lines of a title from the comics but I guess I can try and get used to it.
Blanc - 10/27/2010, 7:37 AM
I'm for Black Mask and Catwoman, especially since in the comics Catwoman kills the Blackmask.

For the film, I think they can have that flirty relationship between Batman and Catwoman. He could try to get her on the right side of the law, but if it ends with her killing Black Mask, Batman has to make the choice of catching her or letting her go.

I think that's how you end it. Just my opinion.
antonio - 10/27/2010, 7:37 AM
my villain choices now, considering no riddler are:
Black Mask
DeadShot
CatWoman
RorMachine - 10/27/2010, 7:37 AM
haha, I told you Nolan would have more sense than to use The Fiddler! 10 times more excited for this now.
JaySchluffy - 10/27/2010, 7:37 AM
Glad theres no Riddler, bit miffed at the name though. So weve just change "Batman Something" in the title to "The Dark Knight Something"

Might as well have called the first one The Dark Knight Begins...
thedon786 - 10/27/2010, 7:37 AM
good title
marvel72 - 10/27/2010, 7:39 AM
i can live with "the dark knight rises",that saves "the dark knight returns" title for when zack snyder decides to make it.

as for the villain thank f*ck its not the riddler, give us someone new.

any of these will do.

1.black mask
2.deadshot
3.deathstroke
4.harley quinn
5.bane
6.killer croc
7.hush
tazmaniak - 10/27/2010, 7:39 AM
What about Talia?I like Catwoman, but she's just a thief. She not that much of a villain.

Talia is much more evil than Catwoman, she's actually a better fighter than Selina.Hell, she probably went through the same training as Bruce. She would have inherited Ra's empire.Maybe she wants some revenge.
Frogman - 10/27/2010, 7:41 AM
Ventriloquist and Kiteman! woooooo!! :P I'm kidding BUT
Ventriloquist would actually be such an easy cameo.

Personally I don't care who they use but I'd prefer it to be a character from the comics (i don't mind characters like Gambol but not the main villain being made up)
ninjacarm - 10/27/2010, 7:42 AM
I like the title. And good, no Riddler, we saw an incarnation of him in Batman Forever, let's see some new villains, but Catwoman is warranted, would like to see her in Nolan's Batman universe.
RorMachine - 10/27/2010, 7:42 AM
I also like that the title is TDKR. That can't be an accident. Could we see some story elements creep in?
Dickel - 10/27/2010, 7:43 AM
Sounds good. Go Imax
ninjacarm - 10/27/2010, 7:44 AM
I'll call it now:

Lizzy Caplan as Selina Kyle / Catwoman.
CaptainQuirk - 10/27/2010, 7:44 AM
@SuperArgo

The Joker won't feature, Nolan has already said so.
antonio - 10/27/2010, 7:46 AM
imax would pwnd the shit outta 3d anyday!

prototype87 - 10/27/2010, 7:48 AM
LEEE777 - 10/27/2010, 7:48 AM

Shaman - 10/27/2010, 7:49 AM
Well, i'm "okay" with them not using Riddler. However, what i think would suck as an ending to his trilogy would be to have Killer Croc as the main villain. No matter if this is Nolan we're talking about, i would see it as cartooning his highly realistic filmverse. The speculated addition of Catwoman wouldn't make things more epic either IMHO. And what the hell, lets throw in an anti-climactic mob film with Penguin and Black Mask, in the bonfire of ideas as well while we're at it. Riddler would have been a huge cerebral twist magnet that would have ended the trilogy perfectly, especially after we saw what Nolan did with Inception.

So here's hoping that they go back to their brilliant roots, in the same vein as their SUPERIOR first film; Batman Begins, by giving Scarecrow a bigger part and introducing Talia to follow in her father's footsteps.
Bronemeister - 10/27/2010, 7:49 AM
Awesome
LEEE777 - 10/27/2010, 7:50 AM
ROR @ LOVE the new AVATAR btw, so you! : D
DCfan89 - 10/27/2010, 7:50 AM
None of this has been the best news to me. But I'm sure I'll open up to it all.
antonio - 10/27/2010, 7:51 AM
also forgot to mention,though i like the title,it seems kinda.....uninspired & predictable.
jazzman - 10/27/2010, 7:51 AM
@RorMachine

most likely lol

its good that Nolan never called it The Dark knight Returns cause people would thought of the comic with the same title that would be false representation like X-Men First Class lol.

@LEEE777

Nolan should cast Guy Pearce it been a longtine that they never worked together
antonio - 10/27/2010, 7:52 AM
@leee777, yes!!!!!! hardy for deadshot! i think my top bm choices are: guy pearce or leonardo dicaprio.
BigChief16 - 10/27/2010, 7:53 AM
I don't care what the title is as long as it kicks ass!!!
Gusto - 10/27/2010, 7:53 AM
I was hoping it was gonna be called The Dark Knight: NUTPUNCH.
AlReg - 10/27/2010, 7:53 AM
@SuperArgo

I've seen that premise online for many fans and the problem is that Riddler is not a zodiac type killer at all I think another villain can cause some more suspense for the audience as they won't be as familiar to the character.

It's also funny people can judge a movie based on the name alone.
2Challa - 10/27/2010, 7:55 AM
I pray The Dark Knight Rises is not the subtitle. So weak so uncreative. I know Nolan didnt name the movie something stupid like that.
Rhys - 10/27/2010, 7:58 AM
HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!! NO RIDDLER!!!!!!!!!!!
2Challa - 10/27/2010, 8:01 AM
I dont beleave anything written bout this movie whole heartedly yet. Since when has Nolan let news leak in preproduction ever.
balegirlbrazil - 10/27/2010, 8:01 AM
After The Riddler, the next one will be out of the movie is Catwoman! Copy this!
DCfan89 - 10/27/2010, 8:03 AM
I'm skeptic of this as well
Hawksblueyes - 10/27/2010, 8:03 AM
Great stuff RoR. I don't have any concerns about this movie.
juggy4711 - 10/27/2010, 8:04 AM
I think the title is weak.
2Challa - 10/27/2010, 8:05 AM
After The Riddler, the next one will be out of the movie is Catwoman! Copy this!

Copied by not agreed with by Hush2010
Watcher - 10/27/2010, 8:06 AM
lol @ Gusto

This is all very interesting. It seems like only yesterday that Nolan was like "I have NOTHING to say. There are NO plans. There is NO script. We have NOT chosen a villian."

Now we have a title. Interesting. Evidently there's quite a lot going on behind the scenes.
AlReg - 10/27/2010, 8:06 AM
@Hush2010

This news came from Nolan himself on the La Times Herocomplex blog this is real news.

@Juggernaut

Nolan never said that he said his brother is working on the script they have an idea and that was mostly it.
