In a pretty big CBM news week, by far the biggest was the announcement that both Catw..excuse me, Selina Kyle and Bane would be the characters joining Batman, Alfred etc in Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

Both had to be fairly surprising choices. There was a sort of general assumption among most fans(and smug net journalists) that Nolan would never go with a character like Catwoman. Why? I have absolutely no idea! I have always loved her in the comics. Granted, she has been used as simple eye candy and a sex kitten(pun intended) type by certain writers but in general , I have always found her appeal is that she appears this way but there is so much more going on. She represents a love interest for Bruce Wayne yes, but also a potential opponent. And a physical threat should Nolan choose to use her that way. Whatever her role, it's a dynamic that we haven't seen in Nolan's previous Bat movies. Like I alluded to earlier, the press release said Selina Kyle, no mention of Catwoman. But do you really think Nolan is going to introduce that character and not take her to the next level? Especially if this is indeed his last batman flick? We may not see Kyle in a costume but I can almost guarantee you that she will be playing the role of villain as well as love interest in this. There are many ways Nolan could use this character. She has been a hooker, a socialite, a cat burglar, even a hero at times. He may combine elements or come up with his own entirely. As for Anne Hathaway, I think she is a good choice. Not great maybe but only because there are other actresses(even from the reported shortlist) that I would have preferred take on the role, but then I didn't screen test them did I! I had only seen her in Brokeback Mountain prior to her casting but have since watched Love And Other Drugs(purely for research purposes you understand:) and can honestly say this girl has some chops. She almost made the movie half decent. Almost.

Now, Bane is even more surprising and harder to figure into Nolan's world for me. It's clear that we will not be getting the 7 foot tall behemoth from the comics(although I'm sure Hardy will beef up considerably) and I'm fairly certain all trace of the "venom" strength enhancing gimmick will be left out too, though there could well be a nod to it. Bane as a roid freak perhaps? So what incarnation of Bane will we see. Well the character is best known for the story arc Nightfall in which he breaks Batman's back. Aside from that he has no other real standout storylines but has always been a firm fan favorite because of his mixture of brains and brawn. The character's roots lie in South America where he has a particularly hellish upbringing and is forced into a life of crime and punishment by his corrupt father. This much I do expect Nolan to carry over. Making Bane a product of the streets as it where will contrast brilliantly with Bruce Wayne's relatively sheltered and privileged upbringing. Sure he went through a bit of self imposed exile for a while in Batman Begins so he could better understand the criminal way of thinking but it's a far cry from Bane's miserable life(provided they keep that element from the comics of course). Another way Bane could be used ties in with Batman Begins. Many expect that since this is the final part of a trilogy Nolan will go back to earlier plot threads when putting together third film's story. Well Bane was actually affiliated with Rhas Al Ghul and assumed the role of his emissary for a brief time in the comics. That's a possibility. Whatever way he is used, expect Batman to be on the receiving end of a sound beating in this movie! They probably won't take it as far as having Bane break his back, but I'm sure there will be a homage to it at least. After all The Dark Knight needs to be put down before he can rise again. Tom Hardy? No reservations whatsoever. He has proven to be a very capable character actor so whichever way Nolan chooses to bring Bane to the screen I'm sure he won't disappoint.

But what do these characters mean for the overall story? Well, we could speculate all night. All I know is that we should expect the unexpected. Nolan will want to surprise us. I have a feeling that Selina Kyle, Bane and Batman will all be connected a more profound way then the usual type of plot mechanics. The great thing about The Dark Knight was how the 3 principal characters were all so intricately entwined with each other. The Joker and Harvey Dent representing the very best and worst a person could be and Batman stuck right in the middle. Painfully aware that he can never be the "white knight" Dent is, and tortured by the potential to be dragged down to The Joker's level that resides in him.

Anyway, like I said, we could speculate forever. Just my thoughts and suggestions. However these great characters figure into TDKR you can bet we(at least most of us) will not be disappointed.

nuck82 - 1/20/2011, 4:14 PM
it means the batman gets his back broken!!!
LEEE777 - 1/20/2011, 4:17 PM
Nuck @ God I was sooo looking forward to the next Batman movie, not so much anymore, of all the characters, they bring in the worst possible two dammit.

An I like BANE but only wanna see the real BANE not something that looks likes BANE, but rather not see him ever again on the big screen after Batman&Robin, so many better villains (and unused villains) out there... Hardy's a perfect DEADSHOT I tell ya!

: P

Hell I'd even take HUGO [frick]ing STRANGE now lol!

WolvieCBM - 1/20/2011, 4:21 PM
Great write up ROR! Love the casting choices for both characters. Also I am pretty sure we will se another villain in the film, a MAIN villain. Just a thought! :)
LEEE777 - 1/20/2011, 4:28 PM
BLACK MASK

Damn.
Cumulactus - 1/20/2011, 4:31 PM
It means it's going to FREAKING RAWK!!
marvel72 - 1/20/2011, 4:32 PM
i actually like the idea of "bane" & "catwoman" being in the film,i would of preffered "black mask" & "deadshot",but these two will do.

i'm just greatful its not "talia al ghul",one of the most boring characters in the "batman" universe.

"hush" would of been pretty cool as well.
Angelus - 1/20/2011, 4:32 PM
Regular steroids would be just a bit... slow.

Why wouldn't venom be used? More out there things than Venom have been in the Nolan films (most notably Batman Begins).
RorMachine - 1/20/2011, 4:39 PM
More out there than a drug that dramatically and immediately enhances your strength and visually swells your body tissue? I think not!
xBlaze96x - 1/20/2011, 4:39 PM
LEEE77@ Just Wait Man...It's Nolan I Think He Will Surprise Us..They Weren't What I was expecting though..i would have liked the riddler or hugo.
Kaedus - 1/20/2011, 4:41 PM
I agree with Leee, there are so many awesome unused villains out there. We've all seen Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman, and Bane before. Maybe wouldn't have minded if they'd had Catwoman in the Dark Knight and Two-Face as a proper villain in this one (similar to the Long Halloween and Dark Victory).
Still would've preferred to see Black Mask and Hush on the big screen. Now that would have kicked ass. Or Killer Croc (like how he is in Brian Azzarello's Joker to tie in with the "realistic world").
Xandera - 1/20/2011, 4:48 PM
Great editorial Ror!

I say we trust in Nolan's ability to deliver...
I wanted something other than what has been presented much like everyone else...
but I'm sure Nolan will make a great Batman movie and shock us all at the same time...

Guys, check out the Sixth Sub-chapter of WHITE FIRE... Sanctuary!

"White Fire"

RorMachine - 1/20/2011, 4:49 PM
Yeah I'm sure he could, I just don't think he will. I don't think he will focus on that element of his character. Remember from the press release, he said he is looking forward to showing us a new interpretation of Bane.
RockNRollCC - 1/20/2011, 4:50 PM
I have some very big ideas for TDKR, that could look and work really well!

If i weren't so lazy, i'd post my whole idea in Fan Fic, but here's a brief summary:

-Hugo Strange working with cops in beginning to catch Batman, evolving into the crazed Professor he is.
-Bane, a muscle bound, yet intelligent killer, breaks out of prison (or Arkham), and is secretly working with Strange to kill Batman. CAMEOS AND REFERENCES(possibly): Deadshot, Black Mask, even Deathstroke, assassins looking to be hired, but are turned down (unfortunately).
-Selina Kyle as the love interest, with Bruce finding out that she's Catwoman later on in the film. I don't want Catwoman as the goody hero, or a straight up villain. I want to see her as the antihero, maybe something Robin Hood-esk, idk.
-Bane breaking Batman's back, and Strange stealing all of Bruce's tech. Then, an epic climax on Wayne tower (Bane and Strange, as Batman, VS Batman and Catwoman.) Villains are defeated. Batman is cleared of all charges, with the public now seeing that Strange was the one, posing as Batman, who killed the cops that Dent killed. Strange is incarcerated, along with Bane, in Arkham.
-Batman accepts the resonsibility of being Gotham's protector. He gives himself time to heal.
-Months later, the city is filled with crime. Then, from atop a building, Batman watches over the city (ala '89 Batman ending), ready to take on Gotham once more.
FIN.

@LEEE dude, stop with all the bitching and moaning! If anything, IRON MAN III is the next "Spider Man 3, X3, and Superman 3."

Christopher Nolan knows what he's doing.
SHHH - 1/20/2011, 4:53 PM
This will be very interesting.. Never thought nolan would touch Bane... Bane is more than a Dumbass Wrestler.. Not only a Real Physical threat but also a master strategist.. Nolan and Company know thier sh#t..

I think were going to see a adapt of the knightfall saga with catwoman in the place of azrael
Frogman - 1/20/2011, 4:54 PM
@LEEE: stop whining, yeah? :P
phoe1 - 1/20/2011, 4:59 PM

i m really curious how the character dynamics will play out in TDKR...i always liked the idea of seeing bane in the nolanverse.
dickmastaflex - 1/20/2011, 4:59 PM
i think he is going to combine hugo strange and bane into one character, and leave catwomen in the middle between good and bad
AlexDeLarge87 - 1/20/2011, 5:00 PM
BANE IS WIN!(Thou Bardem would have been better choice for the role). Catwoman is just... ok (i would have preferred Talia). Hugo Strange as the third villain (played by Ralph Fiennes or Hardy like he should be).

RockNRollCC@ Great ideas!
Hawksblueyes - 1/20/2011, 5:01 PM
Great write up Ror.

You're right, he did say he wanted to show us a different interpretation of Bane but if he was meaning "as opposed to what we saw from Bane in the last film he was in"" then that could mean anything.

I have to laugh at people that think the movie is going to suck because their choice for villain isn't in the movie. Chris Nolan knows what he is doing. The movie will be fine. Stop hating it before you know anything about it.
BruceWayneNewton - 1/20/2011, 5:04 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if when dealing with the option of Superman having a CGI costume, producer Nolan thought that it might work for a Batman villain. I am thinking that Nolan can see the difference in height between the 5'9" Hardy and the 7' Bane. I won't lose my faith in him just yet. The man did bring us the two best cbms of all time.
theHuch - 1/20/2011, 5:08 PM
I like the idea of Bane breaking out some of the more dangerous villains from Arkham. We could get mini scenes of Batman tracking down villains and stopping them, as Bane looks on. So Batman is getting tracked down, he's tracking other members of his rogue's gallery, and Bane and the League of Shadows are waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
dickmastaflex - 1/20/2011, 5:11 PM
i think his choose of villains is fine, how can anyone complain
rostheiceman - 1/20/2011, 5:17 PM
Huch, you could be right plus it would give nolen the chance to put the bigger names in his rogue's gallery without having a back story for each one. cut scenes are the best
GreenHalJordan - 1/20/2011, 5:19 PM
^^^^^^^^^^
i agree. however i think there were many more he could have chosen. just not my best choice i guess.
Shunt - 1/20/2011, 5:24 PM
WOW.. This photoshop photo is almost exactly how I want the New catwoman to look.. I want the More High Tech Cat burglar Catwoman for this film.. This is great work who ever did that

Photobucket

The Only thing I hope is that the Cat mask still covers around her eyes like the Pfeiffer mask.. Just so when catwoman removes the Night Vision Googles, her Identity will still be concealed.. I want to see at least 2 scenes in the movie where she has the top part of the suit unzipped to show some cleavage(sorry, but i have a compulsive breast fetish)haha. also One more thing i would like to see is for the suit to be dark Purple, the darkest purple purple can get. with some black details like the gloves, harness straps, belt, etc.etc. I think it should be purple just to pull away from the constant black attire that has become associated with Batman.. make her stand out from batman alittle bit.. or have 2 suits, one purple ,one black, that would be awesome..

Photobucket

ANYWAYS, I LOVE THAT PICTURE OF ANNE IN THE SUIT.. WHO EVER DID THAT PHOTOSHOP OR IF ONE OF YOU MASTER PHOTOSHOPPERS ON THIS SITE HAS THE TIME, CAN YOU PHOTOSHOP THAT SAME PHOTO BUT WITH (A MASK COVERING AROUND HER EYES, BUT WITH THE GOOGLES STILL SITTING ABOVE HER EYES, AND CAN YOU MAKE THE SUIT DARK PURPLE WITH BLACK DETAILED ACCESSORIES.. PLEASE.. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT..
jonbat2 - 1/20/2011, 5:26 PM
As usual ROR an excellent Artical. Here is a Thought What if bane is sent By Ra's to Destroy Wayne and for all? And What if Kyle is there to pick up the Pieces? Hey in one reality they Had a Daughter The Huntress. So why Not? Any way Nolan if this is his Last BatMan Film Will In my Opinion Leave us all going WOW!!!!! That was on Heck Of A Ride:)
GAC - 1/20/2011, 5:26 PM
Excellent editorial Ror! Very well written. Great insight. I am hoping there is room in Nolan's realistic Batman universe to include a Bane that resembles the comic character in stature and look. I pictured Hardy bulking up to play the pre-venomed Bane and the use of CGI to portray Bane all venomed-up.

I can't imagine this will actually be the last Batman movie. If this movie does any type of box office similar to The Dark Knight, WB will not let the franchise die. They will drive truckloads of cash to Nolan's house to direct a fourth movie and he'll accept. He'll take time away from the franchise but he'll be back.
luckylu - 1/20/2011, 5:27 PM
i hate catwoman. i would rather have robin
fanboy76 - 1/20/2011, 5:31 PM
Awesome editorial ROR. I think Nolans choices for Kyle and Bane are solid. I also agree with you that we probably wont see venom as we know it from the comic books. It'll prob be some experimental performance enhancer or steroid. Maybe even something like a super soldier serum or some form of nano-med developed by Wayne enterprises to heal wounded soldiers, considering most of Bats gear he uses is Mil Spec stuff that never left the research and development phase. IMO They could even tie it in as an experimental or prototype formula created by Wayne Enterprises which was stolen and used by Bane to murder and kill his adversaries. That would loop Bats and Bane together, explain "Venom" and create the conflict between them. I will say this for Nolan is that hes done a good job of keeping the Bat franchise fairly grounded in realism. The hallucinogenic drug from the first movie even though the means to disperse it are fairly unrealistic seemed plausible. Also the fact that with the right training, equipment and desire a normal man could become a superhero. He makes you want to believe the stuff in his Bat franchise is possible.
phoe1 - 1/20/2011, 5:34 PM
i think TDKR has to reconnect with storylines from the previous movies.

maybe BANE could be RAS' son?? coming to Gotham to redeem his father's death. along comes a weird mix of talia (his sister) whos alter ego is seilna kyle?

maybe too much mixin up of the original characters though.....bane could simply be a henchman of RAS and talias ex lover or so.

P.S.

and you spell it ARTICLE, ARTICLE not "artical"
TruePunishment - 1/20/2011, 5:39 PM
Bane is listed at only 6'3" after venom injection.
RorMachine - 1/20/2011, 5:39 PM
Cheers guys. Naji, could well be, the pic was posted on my Twitter feed today.

Damn, one thing I forgot to include was that bane also finds out Batman's secret identity in the comics. That could well factor in and there could also be room for a bit of Hugo Strange type behavior.

Thanks Tabs, but why not post? I don't get ya..

beckala63 - 1/20/2011, 5:43 PM
I don't understand why people don't like Catwoman. I think she is a fascinating character. She's not a good guy, but she is by no means evil or a villain. In most of the books I've read she ends up helping Batman save the day. At the same time, she's not exactly a hero because she generally makes sure there is something in it for her. I think her ambiguous morality makes her a very interesting character, not to mention I love her sassy and sarcastic attitude! With Nolan writing and directing, I am thrilled that she will get a chance to redeem herself on the big screen.
Shunt - 1/20/2011, 5:44 PM
Hey RorMachine, did you make that Catwoman Photoshop of Anne?? sorry I didnt read the article yet becuase once i saw the Picture I had to comment on it asap, thats how awesome that pic looks..
