Variety had previously reported the name of the character that Matthew Modine would be playing, but now we have a bit more to go on. Showbiz 411 report..

Batman's Dark Knight Rises: Matthew Modine is playing Nixon "a politician and a key villain"

It's just in tweet form for now, so no more details are currently known. But we will update if and when we get any more information. Lets assume we won't though, has a Batman villain named Nixon popped up in the comics at any time? Not to my knowledge anyway, but I missed out on a few arcs over the years I'm sure! Also, this makes how many villains exactly? There has been a surge in casting for this movie lately, with some feeling that Nolan may be over stuffing his final Batman film. Hey, In Nolan I/we trust, but it's also a valid concern. What do you think?

Update: Bit of info from Mark V. He has found that there is indeed a character called Nixon in Batman mythology..

Former Two-Face henchman who became one of Harley Quinn's Quinntets.

Nixon (or Nix as Harley liked to call him) was a fairly loyal, if not begrudging, member of Harley's Quinntets. However, he eventually became fed up with Harley's schemes and attempted to kill her and take control of her gang, which he felt could run Gotham without her as their leader. Harley ended up killing him by jamming explosive chewing gum into his gun.

Hmm. I think it's safe enough to assume that this is a different Nixon! But there you go, interesting nonetheless.

The Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freman and Joseph Gordon Levitt and will be released July 20th, 2012.
