SDCC'11: Tom Hardy Compares Working On The Dark Knight Rises To "Starbucks"

In an interview with Hitfix, Hardy(who will play Bane in TDKR) speaks about the differences in working on something like his latest flick Warrior and Nolan's Batman threequel, as well as CBM/Genre movies in general..

Over the course of the weekend at SDCC Tom Hardy stayed good to his promise of not revealing so much as a dickybird about playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. But while speaking to Hitfix he did go into some detail about what it's like making such a huge budget blockbuster with mass appeal, as opposed to his most recent, critically acclaimed film Warrior..

From Hitfix..

“[Warrior] is like the top end of creating something out of nothing,” Hardy told HitFix in an interview this weekend, saying that the film went through “a million” drafts, took years to edit.

“You deal with something Dark Knight – or ‘Mad Max,’ or ‘Superman’ or ‘Spider-man,’ whatever – it’s like going to work in an airport and going, ‘Hi I’m over here!’ and then everybody goes ‘Oh here’s that, that’s the villain of the piece.’ Then it’s a thousand people going to Duty-Free. Like, [shouting] ‘I AM THE VILLAIN!’ and make a lot of noise. There’s a formula here, you can’t muck around with it. There’s a lot of rules, you’re restrained in many ways as an artist. But then you’re also grateful because of the huge exposure and the paycheck.

Could be construed as a slight against these type of movies but at the same time, he's not wrong. Yet some movies, ironically Christopher Nolan's previous Batman flicks for example, can and do strive to break free of those confines. Does Hardy see the director's final installment as simply more "Duty Free"? Anyway, he continues..

“Or the not-paycheck ‘cause they’re making you a stahhh,” he affects. “Whatever it is, you’re paying an entrance to getting higher exposure. These movies are huge vehicles to make a lot of money… and make a large audience happy. So now you’re at the very top level of trying to bring character work in a boutique way to something that is, y’know, Starbucks.

He is effectively saying that with a hollywood summer blockbuster especially one based on a well known source material it can feel very preordained and constricting. Everything is planned so far in advance, and there is a release date set even b4 you start. In a great one like TDKR/nolans work you try and bring some of that off the cuff art house independent magic to something which in the end regardless of art is still a consumerist package deal.

I didnt mean this to be equally confusing as what he said. lol

@PartyHard

I said he was saying that is the goal, to try and bring that sort of thing to something like nolans work/tdkr.

thats the sort of thing that ends in oscar noms/wins for acting. it wasnt the script/what heath ledger said as the joker that won him the oscar it was the way he said what he said (dying, if you believe that), and that doesnt come from producers business plans, that comes from the same things that would be done on stage or in a little independent film.

These Comments Hardy made are just confusing Babbling & Rambling..

- "it’s like going to work in an airport and going, ‘Hi I’m over here!’ and then everybody goes ‘Oh here’s that, that’s the villain of the piece.’ Then it’s a thousand people going to Duty-Free. Like, [shouting] ‘I AM THE VILLAIN!’ and make a lot of noise -

- “Or the not-paycheck ‘cause they’re making you a stahhh,” he affects" -

Okay soo Im a little lost because of the non-sense way he's talking.. Can someone explain what his point was in a clearer manner??.. Is he implying that playing Bane in TDKR is too simple minded, dumb & lacking any challenge compared to his other films But that its a cash Cow Vehicle so he's willing to deal with the role because of the exposure????

I dont know why Im confused..
forthesakeofnow
forthesakeofnow - 7/25/2011, 7:48 PM
@Shunt

like i said earlier, i think what he is trying to say is that with a film like TDKR which has so much expectation to source material and to live up to what its up agaisnt and the last film, any performance is judged even b4 it has been acted. nothing to do with the character bane as such, just that in a film like warrior/anything that doesnt have as much expectation, your not creating, you are recreating. be that nolan making his version of the batman world or ledger making his version of the joker.

in the end something like TDKR regardless of how good it is, is a consumer product made for money, and the trick is to try and inject some art magic into it.
graveyardtramp
graveyardtramp - 7/25/2011, 7:54 PM
@Shunt I got the impression he was saying that you don't necessarily make a huge amount of cash for being in these big movies, because the exposure you get for your career is payment enough? (ie - "You won't make much money from this film but everyone in the world is gonna go and see it so you will be a big star because of it").

Still, I'm sure Tom is making more $ from TDKR than I'll ever see in my life! As long as he turns in a great performance as Bane he can be as rambling and non-sensical as he likes....

@forthesakeofnow... Lmao, thanks dude.. good thing you understand it more then me because normally I dont have problems understanding people but I read this article real quick while watching TV.. I got sooo confused because of the jumbling words that I tried re-reading it but came way with little to nothing.. I almost got an instant headache reading it because I had to keep backing up and trying to read each sentence again..lol... This was not a good article to read when my mind is already exhausted from a long day.. So I guess what i did get from it was wrong...

Just don't get some of these actors ,how can you possibly be pissed to be in a big budget film like this,and make an enormous amount of money then whine about it.If you don't like your proffesion quit! Nobody's holding a gun to your head.

He's got a point. TDKR is a commercial movie, not an art movie. Some actors have a hard time taking seriously roles in CBMs because they see them just as blockbusters made for making money rather than movies that want to convey a message to the audience about something important to the film makers.

I am concerned about him feeling that about this movie, because for me The Dark Knight somehow was able to accomplish both goals: sent a message to the audience about the dark side of our society and our role in it and also work as a successful blockbuster.
