Nicholas Winding Refn Says He Was "Born To Make" Wonder Woman

While speaking to The Playlist the Drive director once again lobbies for Wonder Woman, but also seems to back track slightly on wanting Christina Hendricks in the role..

We sure are giving this guy and his Wonder Woman fetish a lot of coverage considering he isn't even attached to the movie in any way shape or form, but if there is a possibility we could see it happen with the incredibly talented and original Refn at the helm we will keep on plugging away with his thoughts on the matter.

The latest come from an interview with The Playlist. Refn reiterates his interest, adding that he feels he was "born" to make the movie. His Drive star Christina Hendricks has been said to be his number one choice too, but this time he says he doesn't necessarily want her for the role..

“I would love to make ‘Wonder Woman,’ ” Refn declares enthusiastically. “I would be the best at making ‘Wonder Woman.’ I was born to make ‘Wonder Woman.’ To do a movie about a universe where women are more powerful then men—this appeals to me very much.” When asked about the rumors about Christina Hendricks being his number one choice, Refn chooses his words a bit more carefully, paused and then said, “I don’t know if I want her per se, but I think she’s the perfect type.”

As we already know, Refn isn't even a comic book fan, he just has a big thing for this character. Is there a possibility we could see him direct a male superhero movie at any point? Doesn't seem likely. Refn reckons he has already made his superhero movie and it's Drive..

“He (Ryan Gosling's Driver) transforms himself into a superhero, which is a man of conflict. Because he has impulses that he can’t deny. The movie’s about a man who’s half man and half machine. Those two elements have to emerge, but in the movie they are separated until everything starts to merge in his life. At the end of the film he’s now both things. He does it for the right reasons, the violence is justified, but it’s heightened.” Refn further claimed his goal was to make this story “mythological.”

I have seen Drive and it is most definitely not a superhero movie, but I do get what Refn is saying. Hell Driver even "masks up" at one point. Anyway Refn's Wonder Woman, yes? No? Maybe?

the1egend1ives - 9/16/2011, 10:12 AM
Who is his guy again?
LMB10 - 9/16/2011, 10:13 AM
Thats right, you take back every statement you said about wanting to cast her as Wonder Woman, and go and cry in the corner where you belong for even thinking of casting her.
LMB10 - 9/16/2011, 10:14 AM
:P
BmanHall - 9/16/2011, 10:29 AM
Jeez, what's up with this guys fixation for WW?
Greengo - 9/16/2011, 10:30 AM
This seems vaguely familiar -_-
DarthTesla - 9/16/2011, 10:31 AM
Gail Simone to write the screenplay, Jon Favreau to direct.

OR just wait a few years and actually get Joss Whedon to do the whole thing himself.
BlueScarab - 9/16/2011, 10:31 AM
@Bmanhall well its fap fap fap fap fap hes thinking off. why not let him do something whit ww we need to see more of her. and when she eventually makes it into jl movie
canadianturd - 9/16/2011, 10:34 AM
This guy is a bad ass director! It is funny how he's sort of eating his words now.
Greengo - 9/16/2011, 10:35 AM
True dat Trudy
nailbiter111 - 9/16/2011, 10:38 AM
he'll be an awesome choice!
RorMachine - 9/16/2011, 10:41 AM
Go watch Valhalla Rising..hell go watch any one of his movies and tell me you don't wanna see what this guy could do with Wonder Woman.

Now where is Teabag, you don't get any better set ups that that!
AC1 - 9/16/2011, 10:41 AM
This guy doesnt seem to know the first thing about the character. He bases his knowledge off the 70s TV show, and wants Christina Hendricks to play her. She's hot as hell and a great actress, but she's no Wonder Woman. In the same way that Jon Hamm is a great actor but is not the type for, let's say Spiderman.

And he was 'Born to make this film'? Seems a bit pretentious to me. How can you be born to make a film about a character you only know in essence but have never read any of the original stories about?
Hell I've never read Wonder Woman but even I know there's a big difference between the comics and the TV show!

It's admirable that he is passionate about directing a film about a strong lead woman who isnt over-sexualized but is simply a hero. It's great he wants to make a film that could inspire his daughter to grow into a strong woman. But to take a property as iconic as WW and probably [frick] it up due to a lack of actual knowledge about it, and probably piss off millions of her fans (as well as the majority of the DC readership, who've been skrewed over multiple times by shoddy films such as Batman & Robin, Superman Returns and Green Lantern) seems like a stupid idea.

He should just make an original film. In fact, enough film-makers have had the opportunity to write comics (Like Joss Whedon) so why not write a mini-series about an original female superhero for a company like Image or Dark Horse?

Or does he just have a WW fetish?
AC1 - 9/16/2011, 10:43 AM
Having said that, I'd be fine with him directing if he did some serious research into the character. Like if he read as many comics as he could get his hands on, to get a true feel for the character. Dont just base it on a TV show which was loosely based on the comic.

But I still say no to Christina as WW.
NOLANITE - 9/16/2011, 10:47 AM
Christina Hendricks cheated on him so he's eating up his words. Or she didn't give good enough head. Anywho on the lighter brighter side of things, I think he would do a good enough job...well better than what Martin Campbell did with the green garbage movie. What's it called again?!
BuckySoldier - 9/16/2011, 10:53 AM
I do think he would be a good choice. Definitely prefer Whedon over him. But seeing Drive this weekend so well see what I think after that. I think it's hilarious him back tracking on casting Christina Hendricks. I picture a Michela Quattrocicocche type would be perfect for WW.
elcaballerooscuro92 - 9/16/2011, 10:54 AM
that's funny cause i was born to do the actress who plays wonderwomen if you know what i mean
Talontd - 9/16/2011, 10:56 AM
As long as it's NOT starring CHRISTINA HENDRICKS...HELL YEA!!!!

Can't wait to see DRIVE...
NorrinRaddical - 9/16/2011, 10:57 AM
@ror you said it! worriers GO SEE VALHALLA RISING...or Bronson...(maybe the Pusher trilogy)....and tell me you don't want to see him helm this. i can't wait for Drive, and hope Logan's Run does good just so he can take a crack at this. a lot of folks don't want to give the right director's the right credit (writers too of course) but you know it's why movies like Batman Begins are better than Ghost Rider. regarding casting, i think Hendricks is overhyped, but lovely, however if there's one thing Nolan and Ledger taught me, it's have some faith and wait & see
DioFoRio - 9/16/2011, 10:58 AM
he looks like J.J. Abrhams
CaptainTall - 9/16/2011, 11:01 AM
... hm.

Well I've recently seen Bronson. I haven't seen any other movies of his I don't think, but all in all the movie was absolutely great.

BUT.... I don't think his style is on a large enough scale for a WW movie.

So... if it works, let him. If not... that would suck.
Greengo - 9/16/2011, 11:02 AM
Ok @ROR. Challenge accepted.
NorrinRaddical - 9/16/2011, 11:02 AM
ACira i appreciate your points and concerns, but where i think he'll succeed is treating her like the last great untapped ICON of comics. Superman is elevated to the point of symbology and mythology, unlike iron man or green lantern, and Wonder Woman is that level too. i think that is what Refn will continue to do while staking new territory as well. elevate and perpetuate the power. also, on a minor note, Brannaugh wasn't a Thor buff nor was Favreau on Iron Man much, but you know everyone is going to do their hardcore research. nicholas cage has a ghost rider tattoo and son named kal-el and that man is walking garbage to the super heror (and film) world in my eyes. in these situations, heart in the right place loses to the thought into the art
TyrannicalOverlord - 9/16/2011, 11:02 AM
He sounds like he enjoys being on the receiving end of SMBD. Wonder if he still lives with mommy.
pepe - 9/16/2011, 11:09 AM
Who tha hell is this guy?
gaikinger - 9/16/2011, 11:09 AM
If you were born to make WonderWoman then you better watch the trailer for Haywire because Gina Carano is the only choice.
Jordanstine - 9/16/2011, 11:12 AM
So he doesn't read the books?

He's just a big fan of Wonder Woman and her sexy looks which is why he wants to make and direct a WW movie?

Um... I wouldn't trust this pervert director.
gaikinger - 9/16/2011, 11:15 AM
Valhalla Rising was a trip. Go for it. Also...i want my director fixated, posessed, passionate, and focussed on his projects. AGAIN....WATCH THE TRAILER FOR HAYWIRE AND SEE WHO THE NO BRAINER FOR WONERWOMAN IS!!!
Ghostfire - 9/16/2011, 11:17 AM
@Ror
He'll do a good job, and I know what you mean VR was great, but he just sounds so desperate almost with a child like desperation to get a shot at it.

Although I like Christina Hendricks, she's not right for the part. WW needs to be done, but treated with respect and integrity, she isn't your run of the mill heroine. In my opinion, a live action WW film has taken way too long.
gaikinger - 9/16/2011, 11:17 AM
Maybe he saw that great cartoon that just came out a lil while back. Between what i saw of her on Superfriens...Linda Carter...and that, its all i know about her and i dig it baby YEAH!!
gaikinger - 9/16/2011, 11:19 AM
I'd say let Zack Snyder do it but....hes busy.
StrangerX - 9/16/2011, 11:27 AM
Sooooo..I guess he really wants to make Wonder Woman. I say let him do it just as long as he reads more comics and catch up on the mythos> He should probably look back at the old school Clash of the Titans films and Cleopatra movie to get a feel for the Epic scale.
revloveR - 9/16/2011, 11:36 AM
CapA - 9/16/2011, 11:46 AM
Refn, ok. Hendricks, no way.
DarrkEvil - 9/16/2011, 11:57 AM
I like the enthusiasm of this guy ! okay, now I'm getting interested about a wonder woman movie. Well, make it happen DC !!!
cole33 - 9/16/2011, 12:12 PM
Him thinking Hendricks would be perfect for Wonder Woman, is exactly why he's not the guy who should do the flick.

Wonder woman is not a voluptuous curve bombshell with bambi eyes.

Can we just get a good actress without an overly soft face, and has a hard body, and is athletic? Wonder Woman is not a Maxim magazine model.

Wonder Woman needs a certain intensity about her, she needs to have the ability for intimidation. Just make the animated version into a flick.
gaikinger - 9/16/2011, 12:23 PM
is anyone listening....GINA CARANO!
jazzman - 9/16/2011, 12:24 PM
Nicholas Winding Refn is a solid director but his first choice for the role actress Christina Hendricks is stupid. Christina Hendricks is sexy as hell but her for the role of Wonder Woman is wrong.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY

dont be silly a man can director a Wonder Woman movie. geez look at the iconic female character Ellen Ripley from Alien movies played by Sigourney Weaver. a male director made a female character to be kick-ass.
jazzman - 9/16/2011, 12:27 PM
@gaikinger

not a good actress
Thegoddamnrobin - 9/16/2011, 12:32 PM
If he's born to make WW...so what's with Christopher Nolan?..the father of BATMAN??....n who the hell is this guy anyway??
