Bryan Singer's Battlestar Galactica Gets a Scriptwriter

Things seem to be moving forward quite quickly with this, as hot on the heels of the news that a BSG movie would be Singer's next project after Jack The Giant Killer Deadline report that John Orloff is on board to write it..

According to Deadline Universal Pictures is closing a deal with John Orloff to write Battlestar Galactica for Bryan Singer to direct. Orloff has previously scripted Anonymous and Legend Of The Guardians among others. At the very least, he's a fan..

“I have wanted to write this movie since I was 12 years old, and built a Galactica model from scratch out of balsa wood, cardboard, old model parts and LEDs. I love BSG, and I would pass on the job rather than frak it up.”

That "Frak" suggests that Orloff is a fan of the recent reboot of the tv show so could that influence his take on the mythology? Both he and Singer, who has been trying to get this project off the ground for 10 years, are clearly passionate about this but it still begs the question: After such a successful rebooting of the old tv show what exactly is the point? Will these guys use the same characters, setting, story? If so what will be the tone? Guess we will find out. How do you CBMers feel about this?

"All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again". So... why not? BSG was one of the best TV shows in the last years, so I am really looking forward to another direction of the brand.

I personally would love to see a continuation of the original show, but Omitting Galactica 1980 altogether. That’s the only premise that would make sense since the SciFi channel reboot was so successful. Reinventing it again wouldn’t make much sense at all, and it would be way too confusing. Richard Hatch is a great actor and he would be perfect as Commander Apollo, stepping in to fill the shoes of his late father Commander Adoma.

@Tea well, weren't there like 12 colonies like the tribes of Isreal? I think thats where Singer is going with this...

I'd like to see a movie that takes place after the ending of nuBSG. Sure it wouldn't be too 'sci-fi' but great nonetheless. Or mabe in the same canon except in the 'present day' Earth (watch the finale I don't want to give spoilers)

@HelaGood

If you look at original BSG, it's actually based on Mormonism. Like, that's a fact. So it's sort of based on the 12 tribes, but with Mormon stuff too. For instance, the "Lords of Kobol" are based on the "Lords of Kolob" from Mormonism (see what they did ther lol).

But anyway, I hate that this is being made, as I feel it is a cheap attempt to reboot and cash in on a franchise that already had one of the best reboots ever made. The 2000's BSG show wasn't perfect, but it's still one of the best scifi shows ever made, if not the best. Ronald D. Moore's BSG is how the franchise is enough, we don't need a reboot movie of the original show -_-

Got the box set of the re-incarnated show. Best TV show in a long while.
I was in 100% hate mode when I read Singer was involved, but after reading his quotes, he seems to really care about BSG, so I'll be cautiously optimist for now.
But I give thee far warning Singer, if thou dost violate my generous fidelity in thee, thou shalt suffer fanboy wrath unlike the world hath ever known!

singer doesnt care about any property he is attached to.. he just uses it to carry out his own personal agenda.

Y'know, the saddest part of this is that it's just plain LAZY.Did Singer loose MvQuarrie's phone number? There are plenty of people here on CBM who could write something more original.

I'm not feeling it. The reboot series was too good. Too, too good. Cyclic time or not, this is a bad idea. At the very least, an equal amount of time between the 70's series and the reboot should pass before anyone tries to touch this property.

And for Fracks sake make Starbuck a dude! Since Singer is involved, then there is an 85% chance that it will be a dude, since he is into dudes. Just saying!

I hope it's a follow up to BSG Classic as was originally planned years ago. It went as far as being in pre-production with sets and full scale Vipers being built. I believe both Hatch and Benedict were attached to that production before the plug was pulled. I know a lot of people loved the re-imagined series, but It never grew on me. It lost all the charm and optimism of the original. I couldn't root for anyone because there were no likable characters. Here's hopping for a new BSG that fans of both shows will like.

If its a reboot, frak it. The show was good enough.

Bring on BSG: blood and chrome.

BSG is my favorite show of all time, the ending was fantastic, really a mind bender.

My dad grew up on the original and so I watched it. it was a fun show and I love the intro to it, but its nothing compared to the new one. They took the story in a great direction. The religious themes were excellent, the eastern theme of samsara was really fitting. My favorite Artificial-Intelligence sci-fi for sure. I loved the inclusion of the classic cylon's.

Sorry I nerd out on BSG too much.
