TOYS: Rejected STAR WARS Merchandise Concept Designs
Yes, they actually rejected stuff! And ironically a lot of it is cooler than some of the junk they did produce under the licence. Have a look at some unused design sketches..

You might think Lucas a co approve everything that is put in front of them, after all given the amount of Star Wars merchandise out there why wouldn't you? But it seems they do have limits. However, far from being the completely over the top designs and ideas you might expect, a lot of this stuff is actually pretty awesome! I know I would definitely be sitting in a Jabba bean bag chair right now if I could be..
Incidentally, they did eventually make some Han Solo in Carbonite ice-cube trays. I know because I have some. The designs showed up first over at
Action Figure Insider
. Well which of these would take your fancy, and which ones are you glad never saw the light of day?

Some of this stuff doesn't suck. I think the sun shields are pretty clever and I might even buy a desk lamp.
The rings would probably sell pretty well too.

The Han in carbonite fridge would be cool for the down stairs game room.

I don't mind good merchandise if it goes along with good movies, but you're right. He made it more about what he could market than the actual story.

Those are all really cool. Love the flashlight and sun shields the most. I'd pay for 'em all except for the Death Star basketball hoop.

Why were some of these rejected? The mini fridge, wet bar, lightsaber flashlight, sun shields, inflatable chairs, the lamp, hell even the pencil holder are all awesome and could've definitely sold!

I like the bespin lamp, the sun shields and the bantha slippers.
The popsicle mold is funny also, but I'm not licking han solo.

I was expecting the "My Little Bantha" line or endless Jar Jar Binks themed concepts. Most of these are not that bad.

Damnit, I want that Jabba bean bag! I could have my wife dress in the princes Leia Costume and...HAHA
The Yoda backpack is actually sold at Disney World in the Star Wars gift shop. I almost bought one, but thought that a 36 year old man would look kind of silly walking around town with it!

The Death Star Pop a Shot game is designed wrong. The ramp should look like the Death Star trench and there should be a hole that represents the ventillation shaft that you throw the ball into

The Han Solo Popsicle mold, Millennium Falcon sun shield, Yoda backpack, and Lightsaber flashlight are all real! (And there's even an R2 Pepsi dispenser that looks a lot that potable wet bar.)

I may make the R2-D2 wetbar. Always wanted to build R2. The R2 builders club would be a great thing to base plans off of.
