We cover a lot of movies here on CBM that divide our readers, but perhaps none more-so than John Carter. The movie is seen as a "failure" by many because of it's mediocre opening weekend and because it seems unlikely to so much as break even on its huge budget. But the movie's quality was also a dividing issue. Many critics and fans loved it, but just as many thought it was rubbish and a complete waste of talent and cash. Disney and Stanton had high hopes that this would kick start a new franchise, and apparently always envisioned John Carter as a trilogy. This really does seem unlikely unless the movie finds legs - but they had better be strong ones - over the next week or so. There have been lots of theories as to why the movie failed to make much of an impact stateside, but seemed much stronger overseas. Bad marketing and promotion, lack of any big stars etc. These all may have played a part but the important questions for us fans are: was the movie any good, and does it deserve a sequel based on its quality alone? You can read my thoughts Here, now lets have yours..

I saw it on Saturday. I brought my 7 yr old cousin and 8 year old future step son. I felt so bad for having them sit through this movie. They were tossing and turning the whole time till the last 20 minutes when it got interesting.

Everybody kept telling me how crappy that movie was, and my expectations were so low that I actually manage to enjoy the movie on a pulpy B-movie level. But yeah the movie has some serious serious shortcomings. The pacing's all over the place, the acting is so so (that Spy Kid guy and his unacting ass had me in tears he was so bad). I was a little... let's say confused by the stakes at hand. I really don't know what the big deal, the big threat was all about... some blue energy stuff, a wedding to crash, a [frick]ed up Goddess or something... I also didn't care about any of the characters, though the green four-arm creatures were fun and well made, but some plot devices are downright preposterous, like how they all speak english all of the sudden. But one thing I really did love is that dog thingy, that obligatory cute pet sidekick who was actually awesome ^^

My wife and I took my little brother to see it Saturday. For a sci-fi movie that's based on a series written 100 years ago, I'd say it was a damn good movie. All 3 of us enjoyed it and I would definitely see a sequel.

The kid from Spy Kids was the worst part of this otherwise great movie.

Critics are stupid. It's as boring as Mass Effect.

It suffered from uneven pacing as mentioned above and uneven tone (both of which may have been able to fix with editing—not sure). I was surprised the film had these problems in a Stanton film. I don't see any Pixar lineage here.

However, none of those problems make this a terrible experience. The film is still "solid" and true to itself. It has heart and romance. There are a lot of really good things here. Actually, this is sort of how I felt after seeing 'Empire Strikes Back' for the first time—so I imagine repeat viewings clear up the uneven issues. This is not Transformers action (thankfully). This is a blast from the past type of film.

Would love to return to Barsoom in the future.

It was average. Lots of terrible acting (hot or not, Lynne Collins was stiff as a board) but watchable at the very least.

i saw it with my friends opening day! Well-made, if a bit hokey. What do you expect from a 100 year old property though? Woola is a real treat to watch, and the mars scenes are pretty cool. Love the historical embedding, Stanton does a good job of making the post-civil war sets look authentic.

I will be watching it again in theaters with my girlfriend later this week, praise Aries ;-)

it was...OK

great effects and creative action
great sets and locations
the actors were okay, not great but not terrible.

but the story was really hard to follow,at least for me,many times I was like "wait, what? where? who? when? why? what's happening?"

but it was enjoyable, way more watchable than other movies that are considered better (no way this is worst than Star Wars Episodes I and II,judging by the T-meter on Rotten Tomatoes).

Most of the haters are the silly girls that were predicting failure or haven't seen it.
Oh and the people that act as if the 250mil budget came out of their pocket.
The budget shouldn't be a critic's or a fan's concern

I want to see more sequels from this adaptation, if not a trilogy, at least another one.

The reason the movie bombed at the B.O. is LESS about how good or bad was, it's about how POORLY Disney marketed it.

This has been covered on a ton of websites...

You have to remember that, sure, us genre fans know the name John Carter but most people do not. Several people I know didn't even know the movie took place on Mars -- there is ZERO information about that in the commercials. The title says NOTHING (once they cut out "of Mars").

They had a strong supporting cast, which they didn't show to people at all (for actors doing VO's, they could've done a split screen thing like they do in ads for animated movies showing who's doing voices).

Plus, to make matters worse, they've been showing the same spot since the Superbowl. How about giving us some more scenes, more story, more of an understanding of WHO John Carter is, WHY we should care about him, WHERE he is, and WHAT the consequences are of him being there. You know, something some might call an ad campaign.

But they didn't. Disney spent $350M estimated on this movie (including marketing), but they forgot to tell people what the movie was about and who's in it. Astounding.
