The New ROBOCOP Will Be "More Human" - We Will See His Eyes This Time

Joel Kinnaman, who will play Murphy/Robocop in the upcoming reboot, revealed a few details to MTV that may upset some fans. It won't be just "jaw action" this time around, Robocop's peepers will be on display..

Fans of Paul Verhoeven's original have been wondering exactly how director José Padilha would go about rebooting the movie, and the character. I think many assumed the new Robocop wouldn't look too different from the big chrome headed lug we all remember. But according to actor Joel Kinnaman, who will take over the role from Peter Weller, we may be in for a suprise (shock?) there..

"'RoboCop' is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece... it's not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes."

Hmm, not sure how well that will go down. In the original movie the character did frequently appear without his helmet on, but only after he was fully aware of his true identity. I wonder how, or if, that side of the story will play a factor in this new version. How do you guys feel about this? For the full interview click the link below.

Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing, Josh Zetumer penned the script and Sony will distribute the MGM film.

But he's always looked shit when you can see his eyes.
DukeAcureds - 3/26/2012, 4:45 PM
This isn't going to be like the Sly Stallone Dredd or the Spawn movie is it?
kurekurcubic - 3/26/2012, 4:52 PM
come on guys, everything the guy said here is sounding great.
ofcourse that robocop will not look the same, and why would it?? we have 4 movies and god knows how many tv shows with that look.its time for something new.
i mean if i wanted to see the old same stuff i would just watch old movies again...so whats the point then??
joel is a great choice and this will be a great movie,im sure
DioFoRio - 3/26/2012, 4:58 PM
but will we see his heart? : (
DioFoRio - 3/26/2012, 4:58 PM
@Grif...bring the bear back mang
ckal - 3/26/2012, 5:00 PM
More human? Do people just say these types of things just to say them? Do they think they sound impressive with this bologna?

Also, this movie will suck, and not because it is a reboot.
leeholland - 3/26/2012, 5:06 PM
He gradually got more human in the first film. His humanity came back to him over time and then we saw more in the last act when he took his helmet off.

Him being an emotionless machine for most of the movie was the whole point of the film in the first place.
CloserPleasures - 3/26/2012, 5:09 PM
are u [frick]ing serious ? there [frick] this movie this is gonna be shit [frick] you his suits gonna look so stupid watch
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 3/26/2012, 5:10 PM
I'm guessing they want him to look like this. I must say, I really do like the design of it.

:P

Stay EPIC, my friends!
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 3/26/2012, 5:12 PM
Or maybe they'll go with the early designs they had for Robocop.

RedFury - 3/26/2012, 5:25 PM
Sounds to me like they're going to go less grungey with this take. He's probably going to be much more polished and stream lined. Rather then the clunky 80's version.
Darth258 - 3/26/2012, 5:25 PM
Why there's always this urge of showing the actor's face (or part of it) messing with a character design!?!

Damn.
Luminus - 3/26/2012, 5:32 PM
New Robocop:

Darth258 - 3/26/2012, 5:33 PM
Anyways, fingers crossed.. but i don't like this "more human" thing..
SpiderBat209 - 3/26/2012, 5:35 PM
I do not agree with this idea. Robocop was portrayed as a machine in the first film until ED209 shot him in the OCP tower. Then when I first saw Murphy's eye through the bullet hole in his visor; I remember thinking: "Oh, shit! He's still human in there!

That was an epic scene, IMO, and this revision just isn't going to work for me from how it sounds. :P
Alvahnomicron - 3/26/2012, 5:36 PM
Eh, I'll give 'em a shot. There were a lotta tweaks to the Fright Night remake, and that turned out enjoyable for me...
Doctorwho22 - 3/26/2012, 5:46 PM
lol I guess we can see what happens
xfan320 - 3/26/2012, 5:54 PM
I will reserve judgement for now too, as well should everybody else.. Robocop had definitely fallen into the cheese factor (watch the robocop tv movies/series) they were all on netflix awhile back.

I'm glad they're reinventing this. I don't want his eyes totally, but I like the idea of making him more 'human' and perhaps bring the story more to his perspective (like the 1st one!) I imagine this film to be like a gritty cop drama with A LOT of tragedy and sadness. And more of a driving force to his picking up the 'robocop' persona and embracing his rebirth as a machine.. I would probably just whack the whole family in a home invasion..ala punisher with a robo exoskeleton

Fingers crossed on a solid design.
Darth258 - 3/26/2012, 5:54 PM
@dragonking555: My thoughts exactly
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/26/2012, 5:54 PM
The actor needs some face time baby!!
Darth258 - 3/26/2012, 5:58 PM
@RidiculousFanBoyDemands: I agree, but just some bits like the old movies, not half the film.
RorMachine - 3/26/2012, 6:06 PM
But see, like Leeholland pointed out, the whole point of the original was that he finds his humanity having been forced to relinquish it and become a machine..if he starts out already "more human" that kinda loses something from the plot imo. But I also agree thsi isn't quite enough to go on yet, I'll wait and see.
souhunter - 3/26/2012, 6:07 PM
What?
titansupes - 3/26/2012, 6:10 PM
Yep, I agree with all you guys.

This is the first thing that has been said about this new version that I'm just not on board with.
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 3/26/2012, 6:22 PM
I can't agree with you guys more. The entire point of the visor, then losing it during the movie was to show the character in a new light, a more human light. Poor idea, just another Hollywood buck f**k.
GUNSMITH - 3/26/2012, 7:21 PM
YOU NEED THE BLACK VISOR IT SETS THE MOOD, THE BAD ASS NESS...YOU EXPOSE TOO MUCH "HUMAN" YOU LOOSE THE NEAR INDESTRUCTIBILITY FEEL, HE HAS TO HAVE THE EMOTIONLESS SOLDIER THING TO HIS SWAGGER... VENTURE INTO THE "HUMANITY" OF ROBO WHEN HE TAKES THE HELMET OFF..

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 3/26/2012, 7:21 PM
@ironman53 -
:P
AUSSYACE - 3/26/2012, 7:24 PM
Lets just hope the costume looks better than the first and not another shitty design...
GUNSMITH - 3/26/2012, 7:24 PM
I'LL SAY THIS TO EVERYONE RIGHT NOW..ROBOCOP, YOU CAN SEE HIS EYES..EVERYONE WILL AUTOMATICALLY SAY "OH ...FAIL." GUARANTEED RESPONSE. THERES SOME THINGS YOU JUST SHOULD NOT CHANGE. TMNT ALIENS OR AMERICANIZING AKIRA, OR MAKING GOKU A HIGHSCHOOL STUDENT..
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/26/2012, 7:26 PM
Well its official. This movie will suck
optimus69 - 3/26/2012, 7:35 PM
could b alot like snake eyes viser
eleven59 - 3/26/2012, 7:35 PM
So you can see his eyes?? That makes him more human?? That's why they recast Jason- just to see his eyes! /sigh
GUNSMITH - 3/26/2012, 7:56 PM
WE CAN DO THIS NOW ROBO IS IN THE FUTURE SO IT BETTER BE AWESOME, BUT NOT SO FAR BEYOND WHERE IT BECOMES NOT BELIEVABLE.
SLK - 3/26/2012, 8:19 PM
Kinnaman is a shitty choice for Alex Murphy. He's just absolutely not suitable for the type, that this part requires. He has a type of kind of a cabin boy or apprentice, no offense to him, this type is also needful, but this part requires an actor with a type of a mature old hand.
Apacalypse - 3/26/2012, 8:27 PM
I'll reserve judgement until i see the design. This guy is a pretty good actor. This movie could be good. I want to at least see a trailer before I form an opinion.
Shadowelfz - 3/26/2012, 8:37 PM
Of course. Robots are not human looking enough and, according to polls, people like looking at things that look human. Whatever lost any interest I may have had to see this movie.
OdinsBeard - 3/26/2012, 8:40 PM
Seems like a good idea. Help it separate itself from iron man.
Bandrews1 - 3/26/2012, 8:49 PM
Oh good god.
GreyChaos13Zero - 3/26/2012, 8:52 PM
I'm gonna have too agree with @GUNSMITH's first comment, what are they thinking

thewolfx - 3/26/2012, 9:14 PM
@gunsmith

thats wtf im talkin bout!

fuc kwhat this guy is sayin .. a more human robo

[frick] that

i want my robo to be scary to point u hardly recognize hi mas being a person

thats untill hes not in arrest scumbag mode
Floke - 3/26/2012, 10:04 PM
Well... At least he's not from an alien race.
Wasn't the whole point of covering the eyes, to make him less human and more of a cold, calculating, emotionless machine in the first place? Same reason Arnie have shades in Terminator. It is hard to not show emotions at all when your eyes are shown. Especially for Joel. He has not been in Hollywod long enough to be dead inside. Untill then he has to use acting skills..
poop23 - 3/26/2012, 10:07 PM
More badass when you don't see his eyes
darkmetal - 3/26/2012, 10:34 PM
We've had many "Cyborg" stories in film + TV. We've had many super hero movies. Plenty of CGI. This movie is already old, outdated, and nothing new, and its not even filmed yet. They should look at previous 90's rehashes and see, yesterdays flops, will be todays flops. They can redesign him and give him new attachments, but its still just old news.
Fabius - 3/27/2012, 3:06 AM
The first one was just powerfull movie, acting, FX, script...So do another reboot (again) will be very hard.
He has some ideas, ok, now show us some concept art from the studio. Prefer to see this. And I don't want Robocop shoot guy with no blood. It's not RoboTeletubies ! Rated R;
ACira - 3/27/2012, 3:31 AM
The original suit was awesome at the time, and I remember seeing bits of the film as a kid and thinking 'Jesus that's cool'

But it doesn't look very 'state of the art' any more, it hasn't aged all that well. So as long as this redesign retains the overall feel of the original, and the new version looks cool, I couldn't care less if his eyes are visible or not. I mean, it's not like he's being turned into an alien or anything!
GUNSMITH - 3/27/2012, 3:50 AM
IF IT LOOKS MORE HUMAN WE MIGHT BE LOOKING AT A I ROBOT OR UNIVERSAL SOLDIER RIP OFF.
GUNSMITH - 3/27/2012, 4:02 AM
mlauzon - 3/27/2012, 4:59 AM
First, Bay screwing with TMNT, and now Padilha screwing with RoboCop's look!
BmanHall - 3/27/2012, 8:27 AM
@ Dionysios: I don't know why but your first comment cracked me up. =D
SLK - 3/27/2012, 9:53 AM
@knossis, very well said, man. Pitty those guys seem to not understand that RoboCop was more than meets the eye.
