The first images of Andrew Garfield in his new Spider-Man outfit were met with a bit of a mixed response from fans, and although many have since gotten used to his new look, there are still those who have some problems with it - especially around the feet area. I'm sure you have noticed that Spidey looks to have incorporated a pair of trainers into his red and blue suprehero ensemble, and the reason it looks that way is..he has! While speaking to Total Film the director of The Amazing Spider-Man, Marc Webb, reveals why the suit looks the way it does, and how offers a few details on how Peter Parker went about putting it together..

The all important red-and-blue outfit went through various (re)designs - but crucial to them all, according to Webb, was that they had to look like they were made by one student and his sowing machine.

"His eyes are popped-out lenses from his sunglasses and his feet are threads from shoes. We thought about what material Peter would have access to"

So there you have it. If you were curious as to why Spidey looks the way he does in this movie, it's all part of keeping things a bit more "grounded" I guess. Personally the look has grown on me, but I must admit I preferred the old Raimi design. How bout you guys?

The Raimi design was the best. This is growing on me too though.
JDUKE25 - 4/16/2012, 6:38 AM
It makes sense. Once Peter gets a job with the Bugle maybe he'll be able to get new material, meaning a new suit. I'm just glad the web-shooters are there.

Hate it, looks like a basketball. Just playing, I actually really like the look and idea of it.

yeah because ribbed latex can be purchased at any cash and carry

If you're going for homemade, that suit still doesn't cut it. Should be something more like this.

Still doesn't look homemade in the slightest!!! - the first Raimi design, now that was homemade in style!!!

Although this suit is a grower!!
JDUKE25 - 4/16/2012, 6:46 AM

then maybe something along the lines of this...

darkmetal - 4/16/2012, 6:47 AM
And his costume is made from BASKETBALLS. Yes we get it.
rbfn04 - 4/16/2012, 6:48 AM
How will his feet stick to walls? Also, if they are going for a more "home made" look, a simpler design, like the original costume, would make more sense than all those patterns in his glove...
Jollem - 4/16/2012, 6:48 AM
loved the raimi suits(yes, plural)
love the new suit
looking forward to all future versions of the spider-man
my favorite thing in art classes that i took was seeing everybody's varied take on the same thing
Sparrowsabre7 - 4/16/2012, 6:48 AM
I still think it's pretty advanced to be homemade, here's my design for a more homemade lookin' spidey http://sparrowsabre7.deviantart.com/art/Spider-man-Costume-Concept-2-277268282
fanboy03191 - 4/16/2012, 6:49 AM
I like the suit, but it doesn't look homemade by any means.
Spidey31 - 4/16/2012, 6:50 AM
JDUKE- that second pic is AMAZING
NeoBaggins - 4/16/2012, 6:50 AM
The suit could have looked more like the comic suit more so than the Raimi one. A missed opportunity really. Black webbing and the big white eyes. It still could have looked like he made it which, no one should really care about. I think peoples suspension of disbelief is already turned on for a movie like this.

I mean, who's really gonna sit there and be like "That guy's suit is too complicated for him to make. But the high-tech web shooters and Lizard man are totaly believable."
JillValenfield - 4/16/2012, 6:51 AM
The costume is not that bad, it is a good start, with the right colours and web shooters :)
But compared to the Sam raimis version of spidey, it is not that good. The costume from his version looks like the same from the comics (well, without the web shooters of course)
But I think this is still ok! I like it!
Sparrowsabre7 - 4/16/2012, 6:51 AM
Oh and I actually really like the new suit, not sure if I like it more than Raimi's yet, but it is a hell of a lot more colourful. In SM2 the blue part of the costume was basically black it was so dark.
BooYah - 4/16/2012, 6:55 AM
So how are they going to explain him having all the resources to make web shooters?
rbfn04 - 4/16/2012, 6:57 AM
And, if you're gowing more a more "real world" feel, maybe having glass lenses when you gonna get punched in the face a lot is not a safe idea...
supermarioworldE - 4/16/2012, 6:58 AM
No explanation can excuse how lame that suit looks.
SmellofDuty - 4/16/2012, 7:00 AM
@BooYah- You forget he's basically a genius. He probably gets it from Oscorp or from Dr.Connors.
Spider-Fan - 4/16/2012, 7:02 AM
@BooYah or left over materials from that trunk of junk his father left in the attic and he just puts it together
Godzillafart - 4/16/2012, 7:02 AM
Don't mind the costume, but I would never say it looked home made.
Morpheus82 - 4/16/2012, 7:07 AM
They should redesign the suit for the sequel to make it more like the original from Sam Raimi's trilogy, I love the new one but it could still be much better.
JDUKE25 - 4/16/2012, 7:07 AM
@knossis LMAO!! That last part about the boots had me crackin up
Cassidy75 - 4/16/2012, 7:11 AM
I'm with knossis, the suit in Raimi's Spidey went from sweatshirt and a balaclava to something that looked like a multi-million dollar franchise. Although I must admit Neobaggins is right too, suspension of disbelief should cover the costume...I'm torn, perhaps the context will be the most important part. I said the other week that I thought this had a kick-ass feel to it. It's a gamble, can Spidey be gritty and realistic?
DrRockso - 4/16/2012, 7:13 AM
As long as I can see his junk through his jumpsuit, I'll be happy
peppy - 4/16/2012, 7:29 AM
I actually really dig this look I was a bit apprehensive at first but no I really like it and after reading Marc webbs comments just now I really dig this concept you see with rami
Films they never explained it you know, how did he make such a great looking costume I prefer this than too ramis version of spidey
peppy - 4/16/2012, 7:30 AM
* now*
Shaman - 4/16/2012, 7:32 AM
There is no [frick]ing way that that suit looks even remotely home made. And seriously, would a guy actually make himself garters? Come on.
wepzm77 - 4/16/2012, 7:34 AM
I like how the face looks better than Raimi.. This character is looking more like the comic books. The rest of the costume is cool. I don't hate it.
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/16/2012, 7:39 AM
JDUKE25@ That costume i liked to see on the big screen! [frick]ing awesome!:)
Its gritty and seeing how slack it is it could be made from a jumpsuit if you have the right tools.
And it has the sneaker bottoms too.
Hundred times better than the two movie versions.
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/16/2012, 7:41 AM
JDUKE@ [frick]ing love the eyes too!
KNIGHT3000 - 4/16/2012, 7:44 AM
Garters though?
13echo - 4/16/2012, 7:56 AM
We are suppose to suspend disbelife when it comes to a web spining wall crawlin superhuman teenager and man lizard, but when it come to clothing material and Pete's sewing skills lets be realistic?!!? Talk about underestamateing an audience....
Shaman - 4/16/2012, 8:02 AM
Yeah, i mean if they say his girlfriend made it for him and didn't want him losing his boots in mid air, fine. But why in heteroheaven would a guy... take his blue pants... and sow bright red garters on them. This isn't Northstar, this is MJ/Gwen/Black Cat [frick]in' Petey we're talking about.
superotherside - 4/16/2012, 8:02 AM
It still doesn't look liked he made it himself. They talked about the shoes and the eyes, what about the rest of the suit? How did he make that without being a costume designer? Magic?

Still, the story could be good enough to look over this.
6of13 - 4/16/2012, 8:06 AM
I am with rbfn04. How does his feet stick to walls?
I think it mostly comes down to the texture of the material. It needed to look like something that one could buy at their local sewing/material store.

Unless of course the material is something related to Peter's father. I wonder if this means, that IF Venom appeared in sequels, that it would the non-alien symbiote suit i.e. the suit that Peter's father created?
Ha1frican - 4/16/2012, 8:17 AM
This would look perfect if it was cloth instead of the rubber material it looks like. Also the Raimi suit didn't look even remotely home-made. It was all rubber and latex. How could he possibly have sewed that together?
JonathaNisMagnuM - 4/16/2012, 8:20 AM
The fact of the matter is the costume is classic & shouldnt be messed with. Nothing should be messed w/ the costume unless somethings changed w/ the character. Peter Parker has worn THE SAME style of costume for nearly 50 yrs. I can see that what they wanted costume-wise is to go COMPLETELY different for the Raimi films, but they shouldve known that his version of Spidey's suit is UNTOUCHABLE! The biggest dissapointments w/ the costume I have isnt what most Fanboys have. I dont have a problem whatsoever w/ the texture of the suit. It doesnt look like a damn Basketball! Is it a crazy texture? Yes. Is it regular polyester spandex? nope. But in terms of reality that works, because if Spidey is gettin beat up he needs a material that is durable, that way he's not spending countless hrs sewing the suit back up. I hope it is actually something he may find at OSCORP where he modifies it & gives it the red & blue color. Plus, the way that it looks onscreen(Especially when he's pulling the mask over his head) lets you know its still a stretchy type of material
asm gif
The design of the spider chest & back symbol is actually very cool as well, giving it a skeletal look where the pieces of the spider are apart but still remain together to show the spider.
The Amazing Spider-Man Teaser Poster Pictures, Images and Photos

EPIC WEBSHOOTERS ARE EPIC. NUFF SAID'! What I think makes these things look 100x more badass is that if you see whenever spidey shoots web (up above in the GIF I posted) you see a kind of "air pressure" be released. Similar to as if he was shooting a Gun. That let's you know that these webshooters have some power/pressure when they come out & gettin hit by one could cause TKO. Having said that, I'm not 100% about the red blinkng light that's on the shooters. I mean, if you're trying to work in secrecy you wouldnt want red lights blinking at your offensive weapons.

-So basically, I get that the designers wanted to differentiate from the Raimi costume & the "raised webbing" design that was in the 1st films, so they went completely opposite. If you look close enough the webbing design looks like it's been pressed in, like a cookie cutter, or like it was branded/stenciled in the suit. (see below)
Spider-Man costume Pictures, Images and Photos
& you know what? I don't mind that either, & I actually like that part...WHAT I DONT LIKE IS HOW THE LINES LOOK ACTUALLY MORE LIKE A SQUARE GRID=Tons of squares getting smaller & smaller. NO WEB DESIGN, NO CURVE TO ANY OF THE lines to emulate a web, NOTHIN BUT STRAIGHT LINES RUNNIN PERPENDICULAR TO EACHOTHER!! & to make matters worse, they made so many squares & so many lines running through it doesnt even have the appearance of a spider-web! It looks more like math graph paper! Below is what a web design looks like that is simple
Spider Man 2 Pictures, Images and Photos
Now, when it comes to Spidey & the way he's drawn, I'm old school. John Romita SR's Spider-Man art is the what I think of when I think of Spidey, & while Romita Sr gave us a more larger muscular Spidey, the design of web was very simple & didnt have too many "lines" in the web. (see below)
John Romita Sr Spider-Man Pictures, Images and Photos

Nowadays, & since the early 90's w the rise of McFarlane's version of Spidey & Romita Sr's son, John JR, Spidey's web design has been exaggerated to where he has MANY (ALMOST TOO MANY) lines in the web design (see below)
Spider-Man #12 Pictures, Images and Photos

IMO, Raimi's suit did a good mixture of mixing both classic & new web designs on the 1st film's suits. So if it were I designing the new ASM Spidey, I wouldve gone the other way & done alot LESS Webbing pattern & kept it as simple as possible. Besides, if Peter Parker makes the suit, why in God's name would he sit there & make a web pattern w/ so much detail & attention paid to it?!?

& last the Nike Spidey-Frees....NO. There's no explanation for this. None at all. Why theres silver lining on his shoes & why it looks like he's wearing track cleats at the bottom is beyond me! As a matter of fact, the last time I checked, SUPERHEROES WEAR "BOOTS"...not Sneakers. Now, if Marc Webb was trying to identify w/ younger audiences by having Spidey, then he is wrong in that dept & that dept alone. Now, Because I know this movie will be great STORY/ACTION/ACTING/CGI I'm gonna overlook the costume & simply hope that theyve looked on CBM & my comments so that they can do a bit better of a job in the sequel..Cause we all know Garfield will getting a new suit w/ every Spidey flick he makes. Sorry for not makin it short n sweet, just had to let the Bull out of its Cage
LOL - 4/16/2012, 8:21 AM
It's still the stupidest excuse I've ever read on how the costume is "homemade" ...at least with Raimi's version you can clearly see that the soles of Spidey's feet don't look much like shoes and pretty much look like tight socks. Hell, Raimi's suit looked simpler even with the "embossing" than this overly detailed "leotard" piece of crap. I really do hope the movie is better than the POS costume.
continuezero - 4/16/2012, 8:29 AM
Ah ok I can accept why the eyes are not white now. I was pissed about that at first but I can accept him using sun glass lenses. Still not close to homemade.
JonathaNisMagnuM - 4/16/2012, 8:46 AM
@spanglish look up 2 comments above at what LOL said, the tights & thin material that Raimi had in his version of the Spidey suit allowed Peters ability to stick to walls through his glaves & the tip of the boots. In TASM's new gloves, there's blue/palm mit area where he can get more of a grip on anything he grabs, he wouldnt need that if his spider-wall crawling abilities can do that w/o the glove
Ranger14 - 4/16/2012, 8:50 AM
It must be difficult for him to sew together all those basketball covers. It's tough to push needles through rubber, but maybe his newly enhanced strength makes it easier for him. :-P

ChuckRambo - 4/16/2012, 8:58 AM
I think this direction they are taking with the suit is pretty cool. I mean isn't Spider-man supposed to be easy to relate to? So the making of the whole suit in this movie should draw audiences in even further in my opinion, because they can go 'hey,i can do that.'

I still dig the Raimi suit too though. Also i noticed in some stills from The Amazing Spider-man that you can notice where Peter has coloured the suit, because some of the red has worn off and you can see the blue under it, leading me to think that the whole suit was blue and he sprayed it or something.
JonathaNisMagnuM - 4/16/2012, 10:00 AM
I can also bet money that had the suit not been given those "math graph line" web designs that I was referring/RANTING to on Pg 1, the suit wouldnt have the look that some of ya'll on here dub, "SPALDING SPIDEY" & think it looks like a Basketball
GiantNerd0720 - 4/16/2012, 10:15 AM
@JDUKE That could be one of the coolest pictures I've ever seen. (spidey and daredevil)
NeoBaggins - 4/16/2012, 10:19 AM
Sony is not going to risk a realistic rendition of a Parker-made suit. It MUST have some flare and film appeal to it. I don't like the new suit but it's stylized in it's own right. Only the 70s show and the electric company spider-man can truly showcase a homemade effort. Which is ironic considering for the era's there were made... Parker wouldn't be able to pull that off either.

Suspension of disbelief. Now's the time.

Most realistic and accurate account of how it would REALLY be:

And this, just because.

JonathaNisMagnuM - 4/16/2012, 11:04 AM
@Neo the 3rd Pic YES! extremely accurate but, I gotta say whoever's wearin it isnt fillin the suit superhero status wise...looks like 1.20 soakin wet
