TDKR: New (low-Res) Image Of Tom Hardy As Bane; Nolan Reveals New Info On The Character

A new - if familiar looking - pic of Bane has popped up online. Plus, Christopher Nolan reveals a bit more about the character, including why he needs to wear the mask, and that he's the man who "physically breaks Batman"..

With new images and even the first tv spot popping up, it shouldn't be long before promotion for Christopher Nolan's Batman threequel hits full kilter. For now though, here's a new scanned image of Tom Hardy as grumpy ol Bane, doing that thumbs-hooked-in-armor thing he seems to enjoy so much. Also, as you can gather from the txt accompanying the image, Nolan reveals a few more tidbits about the character. He confirms that the mask her wears is not breathing apparatus, but a means for him to receive a constant supply of anesthetic to keep some terrible pain at bay. He also comments on not wanting to compete with the late Heath Ledger's Joker - ”We didn’t want to compete with Heath. We wanted more of a monster – Bane’s the man who physically breaks Batman. It’s an irresistible force versus an immovable object.”..

The image was scanned from Rolling Stone magazine, posted by the lads over at the TDKR FB fan page

it's from rolling stone
Zarog - 5/17/2012, 3:27 PM
Oooooooookaaaaaaay. So he doesn't use Venom (like some of us suspected) and is always in pain? Couldn't you just name him something else since he's not going to have anything to do with his original character?

Man I hope Bane isn't revealed to be a League of Shadow member from Batman Begins. Honestly I want him to have no part with the LOS.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 3:37 PM
Actually the ideal way for this to end, is for the League to realize Batman way of dealing with justice work (think back to Batman not wanting to kill that prisoner), remember Gotham has been prospering for 8 years after the Joker attacks. Perhaps, Miranda Tate is Talia, but she is there watch over Bruce and to aid Batman with the LOS when the time comes, not combat him.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 3:48 PM
How can you not know where I was going deathmetalbrian. I honestly don't know how to make my opinion anymore clear lol.
GiantNerd0720 - 5/17/2012, 3:48 PM
I've said it once and I'll say it again. How..in the [frick]..does..he eat? :P

The pic on the other hand is pretty cool. I like the pics with the coat on better.
OdinsBeard - 5/17/2012, 3:48 PM
we'll bve seeing that mask for the 50 years. instant classic.
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 3:48 PM
No venom? Anesthetic? That sucks bad :(
revloveR - 5/17/2012, 3:50 PM
"director christopher nolan, who created one of the greatest villains in heath ledger's joker"

*rolls eyes so hard he can see his brain*
BIGBMH - 5/17/2012, 3:50 PM
"We didn’t want to compete with Heath... It’s an irresistible force versus an immovable object.”

Isn't the second part of that almost exactly what Heath's Joker said at the end of TDK? Odd way of describing the conflict considering he had just he wanted it to be different.
SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - 5/17/2012, 3:51 PM
What is are the scars along his spine for? I think there will be venom in the movie but Nolan wants to keep it on the hush hush.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 3:51 PM
@Giantnerd

A liquid diet, would be the most sufficient way for him to absorb the nutrients he needs. Actually, for a man that is constantly on the move, that is the best way to acquire the needed sustenance. The nutrients enter your blood stream faster, because your stomach won't need as much time churning it into chyme.
thewolfx - 5/17/2012, 3:53 PM
how does he eat ?
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 3:54 PM
Or a less practical way, would be feeding through an IV.
antonio - 5/17/2012, 3:54 PM
@Soforizo well, with the voice that he has he kind of needs an anesthetic.

On the topic of the pic, Bane looks very cool. Really dig that coat.
GiantNerd0720 - 5/17/2012, 3:54 PM
I mean does he scream in pain while eating his Cheerios?

(wouldn't that be a sight to see?)
antonio - 5/17/2012, 3:55 PM
LMAO @Nail
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 3:56 PM
@SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - Well I hope you're right, but that article is dashing my hopes of Bane having increased strength.
dahamma - 5/17/2012, 3:57 PM
How in the world does he eat
VIRILEMAN - 5/17/2012, 3:57 PM
After the Avengers this movie seems like it's going to be a snore-a-thon. You can't go from Iron Man, the HULK, Thor and Cap fighting aliens to Batman fighting Catwoman...again!
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 3:58 PM
I like the voice, especially in the last trailer.
GiantNerd0720 - 5/17/2012, 3:58 PM
@RFBD Maybe the part over the mouth can be removed temporarily, I really hope they address it at least in some small way.

I will laugh if it's through an IV.
RorMachine - 5/17/2012, 3:58 PM
GiantNerd0720, lol. I;m sure it will be explained how he eats, or perhaps there are other drips in the mask feeding him sustenance as well as anesthetic.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 3:59 PM
Is anyone else stoked that for this filmed they used A Tale Of Two Cities as its model. I love that book, and it's themes fit brilliantly into Nolan's universe.
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 3:59 PM
@VIRILEMAN

Ummm this movie will be anything but a snore-a-thon. It's a different kind of movie. Why would you want all your CBM's too look the same? Now THAT would be boring.
dahamma - 5/17/2012, 4:00 PM
@GIantNerd, oh didn't read your comment didn't mean to repeat but really!! and I bet his breath is Kickin! lol

Nah but sadly I accepted that this is Nolan's Bane, not the real one.
LoudNoises - 5/17/2012, 4:01 PM
The fact that they reveal that the removal of his mask cause him excuciating pain almost implies that we will see his mask removed at some point in the movie. He can probably take off when wants to eat, but it's just not very pleasant to do so. Or like @RFBD mentioned, it could just be a liquid diet. But I highly doubt the eating issue will be addressed in the movie. Seems far to trivial a thing to require a mundane sequence where we see Bane taking a quick break to have a cheesebuger, lol.
dahamma - 5/17/2012, 4:01 PM
He looks better without the overcoat, menacing actually
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 4:02 PM
@GiantNerd

I don't really care if they address it, we could all figure something out in our minds as to how he eats. Also, anesthetic doesn't just wear off. There's a come down time for every drug to lose its effectiveness. Essentially he could take the mask off, eat and have no problem as long as he doesn't take forever. Plus who's to say the pain is in his mouth? It could be located in his lungs, diaphragm, heart etc. He could chew just find, and the discomfort could be in peristalsis.
SmellofDuty - 5/17/2012, 4:03 PM
That's a great pic! And I think the scar on his neck is more than meets the eyes. And venom would be awesome but it'll be awesome anyways am I right?
JonasWepeel - 5/17/2012, 4:03 PM
Why can't Batman get the mask off of Bane?

Looking forward to TDKR, just wondered if there was a reason.
antonio - 5/17/2012, 4:03 PM
@DeathMetalBrian

TheTaskmaster - 5/17/2012, 4:05 PM
I'm sorry but that's not Bane.
antonio - 5/17/2012, 4:05 PM
@Jonas that's what I wondered. Since Bane is pretty much Batman's doppleganger in this film, it's going to take A LOT in order for Bats to get that mask off.
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 4:05 PM
BTW, all gas anesthetics have a certain amount of time that they last on the body before its effects start wearing off. So it's not like Bane couldn't take his mask off, its more that he couldn't last a long time without it.

I suppose the inability to feel pain allows Bane to tolerate a lot of punches without pain, but I'm hoping it also increases his strength.
GiantNerd0720 - 5/17/2012, 4:08 PM
@dahamma lol. It's all good. I'm sure we're not the only people wondering.

You had me rolling with the horrible breath comment. Good work my man. :P
antonio - 5/17/2012, 4:08 PM
@TheTaskmaster there's always Batman and Robin.

Sortis - 5/17/2012, 4:08 PM
Yeahhhh thats not Bane
TheTaskmaster - 5/17/2012, 4:09 PM
@antonio that version was terrible too but they at least tried to make the source material work.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/17/2012, 4:11 PM
soforizo

What, I'm hoping (warning I'm about to get really nerdy here) is that the gas not only aids in alleviation the pain, but also stimulates the adrenal gland (more importantly the regulation of epinephrine). Perhaps when all those shots you see of him with his hands under hit pits (like the one below)

is actually him releasing a steroid that stimulates that gland before he fights. If that were the case, it could explain why he is so strong, and doesn't respond to pain. The pain killer could be on all the time (similar to those on an oxygen mask) but when he needs that extra kick, he stimulates the the gas for his gland. Perhaps he could refer to it as his venom or something.
GiantNerd0720 - 5/17/2012, 4:11 PM
I guess it would take a while to wear off. I think they'll probably just go with that.
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 4:12 PM
@antonio, if this gas doesn't work similar to the venom, then this version of Bane will be as imperfect as Schumacher's Bane.
Minotauro - 5/17/2012, 4:12 PM
The mask must have a relation to venom. Nolan just covering up the facts as usual.
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 5/17/2012, 4:12 PM
The tears of hate are glorious. Must be interesting to live a life where such trivial things cause you such great pain. Maybe it is you who needs that mask? lol
MJPETTY7 - 5/17/2012, 4:12 PM
The anesthetic is obviously a reference to his Venom from the comics... Also, there have been MANY time where Bane hasn't used Venom at all, so this is nothing new, it's just something that a lot of you guys haven't seen because you don't really read the comics. Nuff said.
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 4:13 PM
@RidiculousFanBoyDemands,

I'm starting to hold out hope for that too. I want him to be physically imposing. At least we know for sure that Nolan nailed Bane's intelligence.
