First Look At Matt Damon In Neill Blomkamp's ELYSIUM

Sci-fi fans should be anticipating this one quite a bit, since it's being directed by the man responsible for the fantastic District 9. Like that movie, Elysium is expected to combine action with sociopolitical ideas. EW have debuted the first image of Matt Damon as the movie's "hero" Max..

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy "Coordinators," people who can afford bio-genetical engineering, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, built by the Armadyne Corporation, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky ex-con Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Elysium also stars Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura, Sharlto Copley and Alice Braga. It is scheduled to be released on March 1, 2013.

it a lot. That's why I have high hopes for this.

QuietStorm - 7/4/2012, 10:09 AM
I put this on my watch list after rummaging through Matt Damon's IMDB page. Glad it turned out he really is doing this movie. We all know IMDB isn't the most reliable source for upcoming projects.

2013 simply will be a great year, and Elysium could be on the top of it for me.

MovieMann - 7/4/2012, 11:26 AM
@Seejay

After Earth = WTF?

World War Z = Not sounding too good right now

The Last Stand = Can't really judge Yet

The Tomb = I'm guessing you really liked The Expendables (and Schwarzenegger)

Oblivion and Die Hard = Wild Cards, but nothing really to drool over
GLprime2814 - 7/4/2012, 11:37 AM
I'm looking forward to all Scyfy fantasy and comic movies
Seejay - 7/4/2012, 11:39 AM
@MovieMann

Well, true, after reading the synopsis for After Eeart, I am in doubt. But its sci-fi and Will Smith is in it, hoping for the best.

The Last Stand and The Tomb, because they are Arnold s comeback. Expendables 1 was "awfully good".

I am guessing Oblivion and Die Hard will be two fun rides - no more - no less.
thewonderer - 7/4/2012, 11:51 AM
A great director, should be put on a CBM.

Marvels too cheap though, so I'd say DC should

Niell Blomkamp needs to make a Metal Gear Solid movie!!! He would be perfect to make that film!
weaponx123 - 7/4/2012, 6:13 PM
I'm excited to see what Blomkamp does with this film because it has a much larger budget than district 9 which was made for only 30 Million! He is simply one of my favorite up and coming director's right now.....so stoked for Elysium!!!
gasmasquerade - 7/4/2012, 8:40 PM
District 9 ranks in the top 5 of my favorite sci-fi films. This is the first I have heard of this Elysium film but I am now looking forward to it. I like the way the Director builds his plots around divisive social issues.

Give it to Hollywood to extol the virtues of illegal immigration.
Viva la propaganda machine!

soforizo Ask yourself what would superman do?
Would he stereotype, be racist or go after bad guys and help those in need?
dipish!t, this country was made up of immagrants!
UrbanKnight - 7/5/2012, 2:09 AM
Really looking forward for to this btw!
soforizo - 7/5/2012, 9:07 AM
@UrbanKnight

I never ask myself what would a fictional character do? WTF is that?

We already have one of the most generous immigration policies in the f'ing world, so it's not as if we don't allow immigrants. Get your facts straight!
UrbanKnight - 7/6/2012, 12:32 AM
Oh so you just casually like superman but dont really believe in his morals cuz he's fictional!?

How convenient. I rarely speak before thinking, you should try it.

If migrating legally to the United States was as easy as you think, would Mexicans pay thousands of dollars in smuggling fees and risk thir lives to the "coyotes" if the legal way was more convenient?

MOST are desperate to work which is why so many assume fake Social Security numbers (like my parents did AT FIRST) that ensures payroll and Social Security taxes get pulled from their pay like everyone else!

Or some just slang oranges, strawberries and flowers by the freeway.

legal immigration takes years that poor people can’t afford to waste in poverty when a risky trip might be worth it.
Besides the last 2 years illegal immigration has slowed to a near stop!
soforizo - 7/6/2012, 4:24 PM
@UrbanKnight

Superman is my favorite comic book character, but that doesn't mean I blend fiction with reality.

--If migrating legally to the United States was as easy as you think, would Mexicans pay thousands of dollars in smuggling fees and risk thir lives to the "coyotes" if the legal way was more convenient?

Of course it is more “convenient” not to pay and to skip over everybody else waiting in line! It is a reflection of the widespread sentiment found in Mexico, where many obey the laws as long as it benefits them. I know this because I live in Mexico. I also know that many of those who cross illegally are among the poorest in Mexico, which is why the Mex government doesn't give a damn of them leaving, as it’s less people they have to spend money to support and once illegals find jobs in the US, it helps Mexican economy as it is estimated that their immigrants send over $20 billions in American dollars back to their economy every year. Again, very convenient. The Mex government argues for the “plight” of illegal immigrants of Mexican descent, because it benefits them; try researching how they treat South American illegals for a change.

--MOST are desperate to work which is why so many assume fake Social Security numbers (like my parents did AT FIRST) that ensures payroll and Social Security taxes get pulled from their pay like everyone else!

“Fake”? How about stolen or borrowed for money? Back when I was in the States I had plenty of friends who paid for stolen SS numbers, it’s not only Mexicans because I have friends from other countries that’ve done it too. More to the point about taxes, many of my friends received MORE money in tax refunds that they EVER paid in! The trick was to claim many dependents by shoddy paperwork. One of my friends managed to claim 7 freaking dependents when he actually had no kids! So come tax time, even though we were paid the same rate and I’m American, he would actually get a lot more money back than he EVER paid in. It’s a net positive. It’s really ridiculous. So for many this whole “paying taxes” crap is pure BS; the financial and safety incentives of using a stolen or borrowed SS number as an illegal is better than working without one. It is estimated that illegals receive about $4.2 billion dollars ANUALLY with that child credit gimmick. I don’t know about your particular case, but it’s sure great to ‘pay taxes’, when you end up receiving more money back than you paid in.

I could also talk about health care, because I once helped translate for an illegal friend who had a bill in excesses of $21,000 forgiven by a Catholic hospital without paying a dime. Granted I don’t know how widespread cases like his are, but it does suggest that it isn’t a net positive.

Btw, I didn’t used to be against illegal immigration, until I moved to Mexico and have seen the opportunistic mindset of many and the how daily life is down here –which also happens in other poorer countries--; that mindset allows corruption to prosper and is certainly one of the reasons why things don’t improve much down here.

-- legal immigration takes years that poor people can’t afford to waste in poverty when a risky trip might be worth it . Besides the last 2 years illegal immigration has slowed to a near stop!

First off, when we talk about the poor in Mexico, it is not as if they're to the level of Africa’s poor. The government here does give aid to their poor, maybe not a lot, but they've got it better than many others. Anyways, if it's really an issue of given preference due to poverty, then less bring boatloads of Africans and Indians instead; there are plenty of other South Americans worst off too.

No country wants to have mass importation of poverty, neither should the United States. But I suspect that as soon as our economy improves the flow of illegal immigrants will increase (however accurate any census of illegal immigrants is).

Finally, even if your parents came to the States illegally, you shouldn’t be in favor of illegal immigration. You can’t seriously think that a country can withstand an indefinite flow of poor illegal immigrants, without eventually lowering the standard of living for the rest of the population. It not only increases competition for jobs among other Hispanics in the States -- which let's be honest, most aren't picking cherries--, it also increases the burden on social services.

"Superman is my favorite comic book character, but that doesn't mean I blend fiction with reality."

Art immitates life immitates art. figuratively of course.

While others are waiting in line these people RISK THEIR LIVES because they are desprate!
Yes Mexico has ALWAYS suffered from corrupion which is what happens when a country has a revolution and is left to be run by the previously oppressed that had been denied a good education (was talking to my dad about this not too long ago).
The reason our economy is crumbling is because AMERICAN corporations closed most domestic factories in the 80s, relocated to foreign countries to increase their profit motive. Mexicans ARE the scapegoat! So its the poor peoples fault right? Not the multi-generational rich greedy and corrupt?(LEX)

Damn my parents were duped then cuz they payed taxes and didnt get sh!t back!
Of course there are illegal activities you can indulge in, such as ur friends have.
But think about what the CEO's get away with when their combined net worth is larger than 95% of the entire US population!!! Wake up! They have brainwashed americans against the wrong group of people. A large but poor group of people! THEY are taking our money not illegal immigrant!

Africa's poor are across the atlantic man! mexico is just south of us. As u "living" there should know.
Where have you been? Central/south americans are here in large numbers as well. Im in LA.

So u must think most mexicans are good for nothing? Unskilled, unprofessional? Like all races, their is a criminal MINORITY, its not enough to condem the entire nationality!
With time they will assimilate.

What we should really worry about is those CEO's taking over OUR government and bleed us dry!
They are the ones taking OUR jobs!!!

Mexico has a larger middle class that us now!! The large influx is over
UrbanKnight - 7/6/2012, 11:03 PM
Who/what are they gonna blame it on next!?
UrbanKnight - 7/6/2012, 11:06 PM
How can the minority of the population cause problems for the majority of the population!!! Wake up! Does that make sense? Do the math. Its the opposite!
