We have seen this intense looking fellow before, but never knew what we should be calling him, until now..

Baz, Earth’s NEW Green Lantern, battles The Justice League! Meanwhile, The Guardians begin their final step in the destruction of the Lanterns by releasing the first of the Third Army soldiers!




Baz the Green Lantern. Most of you probably don't find that too funny, but as Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston points out, here in the UK and Ireland Baz or "Bazza" is short for Barry. Just doesn't have a very intimidating ring to it does it?

Not a huge fan of the costume, but it could have been a lot worse. I've been wanting to know more about this character since Free Comic Book Day.

I appreciate that DC hasn't made comments which attempt to sell the character's ethnicity, rather than the character like they have done in the past (or sexuality in the case of Alan Scott). That said, they have still made it a point to showcase his ethnicity in their artwork. I can almost see it now...

"How are people going to know he is a middle easterner if we put this mask on him?"

"WE'LL PUT A TATTOO ON HIS ARM IN ARABIC AND MAKE SURE THAT IT IS PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED ON THE COVER!"

DC never misses an opportunity to out-PC Marvel while trying to sell comics at the expense of a race/group of people. I wish they would just stop. It's OK that he is middle eastern and most likely Muslim, it is NOT OK for you to use it as a controversy/hype tool to sell comics.


I have some predictions. This character's religion has absolutely dick to do with him being a Green Lantern, correct? DC is going to make it a point to showcase that he is a Muslim, and those will be the first images of the next issue that are released to us. He is more than likely going to be praying towards Mecca at a mosque and spot some terrorists doing terrorist things (suicide bombing, shooting, beheading, kidnapping, etc.). There will be a monologue about how much he despises those who give Islam a bad name, and he is going to start/join some struggle against them. It is during this struggle that he will be selected because of his great willpower. This will most likely happen after he has been captured and tortured while refusing to join them/give up his friends/etc. To dial up the PC notch to 11, I am going to say that he protects/befriends a Jew or group of Jews.

Hopefully he'll be introduce just to kill. Not liking this. We don't see enough of the other lanterns in the corps. This is totally un necessary.

And from what I've seen in PREVIEWS he'll also carry a hand gun. Ok, just what every person who can make weaponised constructs with their mind needs. Oh, poor DC they just don't know what to do nowadays.
