Is This Our First Look At The "Great Goblin" From THE HOBBIT?

Check out a couple of images that are rumored to be our first visual of some Goblins from Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. The main pic is said to be the grotesque Chief - or "Great" - Goblin, played by Barry Humphries. Possible spoilers ahead..

Quite the looker eh? The images popped up over at a French Tolkien site (via One Ring.net), and seem to be taken from some type of card set. There is also the following description of the Chief Goblin and his minions from the upcoming movie. (translated)..

"The Goblin King is a huge, grotesquely bloated monster, that in the years of his tyrannical rule over the miserable inhabitants of the Goblin town, grew fat and flabby. The Goblin town is a collection of skew-whiff ramshackle huts deep in the caves of the Misty Mountains. He commands a bunch of foul, polluted, with scars and ulcers studded goblins.

Basically, they are bandits, they live by what they can pick up from passengers on the passes through the mountains. The Goblin King and his followers manage to capture Bilbo and the dwarves. The Goblin King is more wily and smarter than it seems. He takes pleasure in torturing his prisoners — he almost succeeds to finish off Thorin Oakenshield and his companions."

It looks like the mark of del Toro. It very much fits his films' aesthetic.

LoudNoises - 9/3/2012, 8:44 PM
@imnotahero

Lol. I thought the same thing when I first saw it. Very Del Toro-ish. Reminds me of that troll lady who eats cats in Hell Boy 2. Cool stuff though, I'm diggin it.
LoudNoises - 9/3/2012, 8:47 PM
@angus666

I missed your comment about looking like the troll lady from Hell Boy. You beat me to the punch!

Really looking forward to the new creature designs for this movie. One of the many positive things about the lotr movies.
Maximus101 - 9/3/2012, 8:53 PM
Looks like yossarian!
fettastic - 9/3/2012, 8:58 PM
Why don't these goblins look like the goblins from the mines of Moria? Seems like a plothole.
angus666 - 9/3/2012, 9:04 PM
@LoudNoises Great minds mate...
REDSTORM - 9/3/2012, 9:11 PM

Ironfran - 9/4/2012, 2:31 AM
I can't wait for this!!! I prefer the Hobbit over the lord of the rings, I fund it a way more adventurous. this waiting is killing me!!!!!
TheJoker1986 - 9/4/2012, 3:14 AM
looks great.

Facade - 9/4/2012, 5:25 AM
Similar to Moria orcs from FOTR (as expected). Should be [frick]ing epic!
Facade - 9/4/2012, 5:27 AM
@fettastic because they're underground dwellers of the Misty Mountain ;p
grampageezer - 9/4/2012, 7:05 AM
Looks like your average everyday Peter Jackson Goblin similar to those depicted in the mines of Moria and not what I pictured the "Great Goblin" to appear like.
Wouldn't, in a Goblin society, the biggest, strongest and smartest Goblin rise to the top as leader through sheer brute force over the others?
But I'm sure Jackson won't disappoint us.

Actually it looks more like a Guillermo del Toro design.
Fogs - 9/4/2012, 8:02 AM
Holy crap!

Fogs - 9/4/2012, 8:03 AM
I mean, it's awesome! Not cartoony as I imagined him when I read the Hobbit as a teen.
SpideyQuad - 9/4/2012, 8:04 AM
I'm fasinated with the differances between goblin's and orc's.

At one point I thought they were the same, but I think someone, maybe Jackson, stated differently.

Orc's are tortured Elf's who suffered under Melkor.
PapaMidnight - 9/4/2012, 8:48 AM
I like it, but... seems like a person with some genetic anomaly. I think they would have more... hum... fantastical appearance?
Too Orc-ish IMO.
ComfortablyNumb - 9/4/2012, 9:46 AM
Actually it looks more goblin than orc to me. The eyes and ears scream goblin.
GrayMatter - 9/4/2012, 6:25 PM
Hmmm.... I dunno. Jury's still out for me till I see him in action. He looks too.....flabby. He needs to be a strong fighter-type. But then again this is mostly just of his head.
soaponapope - 9/4/2012, 9:57 PM
EXCELLENT.
comicb00kguy - 9/5/2012, 10:07 AM
They kind of look more "gross for the sake of being gross" than truly frightening.
jumpingJellybeans - 9/5/2012, 11:47 PM
Dammit. I clicked on it because I thought it said Green Goblin and my instincts to be a dumbass kicked in.
