10 New Stills From THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Released

Apple have debuted 10 brand new images from the first part of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. They mainly feature close-ups of our heroes - Bilbo, Gandalf and The Dwarves - but there are a couple potentially spoilery action shots too..

By Mark "RorMachine" Cassidy - 9/8/2012

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

Nomis1800 - 9/8/2012, 2:42 AM

Nubase - 9/8/2012, 3:14 AM
@rebellion

The magic will capture you again when you watch the hobbit

Just look at the 3rd pic, that gona be an amazing scene to watch on imax!

this movie had to be made, the only downside was this movie should have be made a lot sooner when del toro was at the helm to direct it but with all the problem of tax in new zealand it delayed shooting by 2 years and del toro made the decision to walk away but he still on board as producer and co writer.
Charlie2094 - 9/8/2012, 3:14 AM
Can't wait! Should be good, everything looks great so far, the video blogs show a great atmosphere on set too which is always a good sign.

@rebellion

The more childlike-simplistic nature of the Hobbit wouldn't work after Lord of the Rings. Hardly "money grabbing either". The Hobbit had to be at least two films. It's written in a much more simplistic nature than lord of the rings and every chapter is somewhere new, couldn't be done in one. Then, considering they can't adapt The Silmarillion, why not include material from the appendices to flesh it out and add more story? I personally, would much rather see this than a standard adaptation of the book.
marvel72 - 9/8/2012, 4:03 AM
can't wait to see this, what's the problem with it being over three films if its a more faithful adaption, you & i can't do anything about it so why worry.

boycott the movie, its still gonna make money without yours.
sameoldthing - 9/8/2012, 4:05 AM
For some reason I just cannot root for Hobbits..I want Orcs or dragons or even just a damn bear to tear into them, eat them & crap them out.
Boyle360 - 9/8/2012, 4:10 AM
The third one is hilarious!!!
"I think this might be shopped."
marvel72 - 9/8/2012, 4:15 AM
i agree with boyle360 the third one doesn't look the same quality photo as the others,it looks photoshopped.

When I 1st saw FOTR in theaters, I was disappointed because I had re-read Tolkien so often that NOTHING would meet my unachievable expectations. Then came the extended versions! PJ told Tolkien's tale HIS way and in some ways it was an improvement (sorry Bombadil) and others not so much (Gothmog). As a trilogy, I hope gaps will be filled similarly to the extended versions, thus making this a more complete tale. It may not be perfect (Nori) but it has potential (PJ).
RorMachine - 9/8/2012, 5:16 AM
What's wrong with Nori?
flannelmandude - 9/8/2012, 5:17 AM
The thing I don't like about this is the dwarve's beards should all be huge! Also Bilbo should be smaller than the dwarves, he's the same size as them in the picture above. I still believe that this movie will kick ass regardless of the flaws I find.
Danbojohnj - 9/8/2012, 5:34 AM
Everything looks great except Kili the model Dwarf with the designer stubble.Sell outs.
OdinsMissingEye - 9/8/2012, 6:33 AM
@flannelmandude

I think the reason behind Bilbo being the same size as the dwarves was so Bilbo could act alongside them in all shots, which should make for a better performance and give the movie a better look, cause as you know in the LOTR in the group wide shots they had to film each character individually then incorporate the shots together, or use the stand-in midget guys.

I agree he should be smaller than the dwarves as we seen the size difference in LOTR when the hobbits have been beside Gimli, but I think that because they wont be using as many stand-ins of those little people in the shots or filming actors separately I can accept it.
Hawksblueyes - 9/8/2012, 6:52 AM
It baffles me how any fan of the book could NOT be stoked for these films. Everything about them looks fantastic to me.
Rowsdower - 9/8/2012, 6:55 AM
"The Hobbit Trilogy" lol
timotey - 9/8/2012, 7:27 AM
@Nubase: God, I'm GLAD that Del Toro didn't direct it. All his creatures look the same, whichever movie of his you take. He wanted to use rubber creatures instead of CGI and tinge everything red and gold. Yuck!
SpideyQuad - 9/8/2012, 7:30 AM
Grif, it's movie(s) so get it straight!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/8/2012, 7:46 AM
Is the third photo concept art? cause that looks fake as hell.
Facade - 9/8/2012, 8:07 AM
@RorMachine...just not diggin' the star hair sculpture. One of the things I thought lent to the credibility of LOTR was the natural, weathered look of their hair. Nothing seemed too clean in that movie (except Legolas and the elves). The yak hair used in this has too much product in it ;D
Morpheus82 - 9/8/2012, 8:29 AM
Wait for the next trailer before you judge the movie!
ComicFan523 - 9/8/2012, 8:39 AM
If these movies are even half as good as the Lord of the Rings they'd still be worth watching. I don't really see any cause for alarm in any of the promotional material they've released so far, although the dwarves do look kinda silly in some of the stills.
grampageezer - 9/8/2012, 8:50 AM
Is that a young Aragorn?
And I think they made Gandalf a little too young looking as compared to his wrinkles in LOTRs which takes place only 50 years in the future of the Hobbit.
After all, if he's supposed to be thousands of years old, how much would his appearance have changed in a measly 50 years?
Probably about as much as how our features have changed since yesterday.
Nomis1800 - 9/8/2012, 9:08 AM
Want in UHQ!
Nomis1800 - 9/8/2012, 9:08 AM
@ImmortalVigilante: you mean, wait for the movie to judge the movie ;)
Bodwulf - 9/8/2012, 10:01 AM
Great Post Ror!
TankD - 9/8/2012, 11:07 AM
Iv been thinking about it and thinking and wondering why this movie doesnt appeal to me at all... THE DWARVES I hate fcuking dwarves. a whole 3 movies without characters in the spotlight like aragorn and legolas we have that fat ass dwarf and and other dwarves with shitty makeup. [frick] this movie.
Ranger14 - 9/8/2012, 11:16 AM
How is this something that it shouldn't be and who the hell has the guideline rulebook as to how a dwarf is supposed to look? Why do people want all the dwarves to look the same? To each their own, but I don't get it.

TankD@ Shitty makeup? Weta is doing the makeup for the Hobbit films and won awards for their makeup work in the LOTR trilogy. Shitty makeup...okay.

You apparently haven't paid attention to the other characters outside of the dwarves that are part of this film and the book, but if you hate dwarves don't watch the movie. Not too difficult to figure that out.
soberchimera - 9/8/2012, 12:18 PM
@ATastyBurger I know right? Seriously, are they adapting every sentence?
Oxbow - 9/8/2012, 12:29 PM
I want to make the 3rd pic into a t-shirt and wear it in the 80's
Facade - 9/8/2012, 12:37 PM
@Stigmartyr...lol, my hair looks a shit mess after a couple of days camping :P

Morpheus82 - 9/8/2012, 12:57 PM
@Nomis1800 I guess you're right!
RexDartEskimoSpy - 9/8/2012, 12:57 PM
More important question: How the hell did Bombur get his fat ass up on that table?
riseofLOGANX36 - 9/8/2012, 9:00 PM
