Fans have been crying out for a MAX take on Wolverine for a long time now - after all, if any character qualifies for the more mature imprint it's surely the Mutant berserker. Well this October we will finally be getting a new ongoing MAX series from writer Jason Starr, with art from Connor Willumson and Roland Boschi as well as covers by Jock. Speaking to CBR, Starr reveals a little of what we can expect from Wolverine MAX..

"I definitely looked for a realistic version of Wolverine and not a superhero version. I wanted a down to earth guy who could function in the real world. I wanted to give him a back story that really explains how he's been able to do that for centuries -- to integrate into society. To me, that's what those stories have -- a kind of realistic bent where this stuff could actually be happening. My main story line is about a robbery even though it will include some elements like his claws, healing factor, etc. But you would believe this could all happen in the real world. I really wanted that."

Wolverine certainly lends himself to a gritty approach, but "real world"? A lot of fans don't like it when their favorite characters are taken out of their usual comic-book-reality settings so it will be interesting to see how this is received. I believe in the real world Wolverine would be screwed if he ever had to go thru a metal detector .
KaneVonDoom - 9/11/2012, 10:36 AM

get'er done
ComfortablyNumb - 9/11/2012, 10:50 AM
X1 was too real world??

Yeah, cause getting thrown off the Statue of Liberty and using your fictional metal claws to hook in and spin around one of the spikes on the crown is so practical.
Theunderdog - 9/11/2012, 11:02 AM
X1 too realistic??? It supposed to be unrealistic that what all superhero movie are about escapism and imagination
DioFoRio - 9/11/2012, 11:09 AM

DioFoRio - 9/11/2012, 11:14 AM
I'd be scared to spank it. Or wipe. Healing factor or not.

I really don't understand when people say the x-men movies had a realistic tone. Really.

I don't know about the Garth Ennis idea, I love the guy, but I don't think he cares too much for Wolverine, The X-Men or really any well established hero that he can't write into a complete, soulless ultra-violent murder machine.

Screw the "real world" scenario for comic book movies..it's pure bullshit!
I want the outlandish, impossible & intense action & stories like the world of comics provide.

If I want the "real world" I can just look outside my f-ing window!
With the way movies can be made today there is no reason you can't translate the comic book world into the cinema.

Marvel Studios seems to do it well so far..Fox needs to learn from them.
Wolverine is a brutal & gritty character but he's deserves to be in a movie where the "super" can occur..real world my ass.

Moakynubs - 9/11/2012, 1:01 PM
Awesome covers... but I want more Old Man Logan.
billytwohats - 9/11/2012, 1:10 PM
Damn you Nolan and your gritty real world Batman!!! I myself am waiting for the gritty real world Popeye.
animeex - 9/11/2012, 1:15 PM
In so many words... Wolverine my way and oh well to the readers and the ones that love the comic.
neonhero - 9/11/2012, 1:32 PM
...real world Popeye, buwahaha!

I'll read it, but Deadpool MAX generally bored me, and I'm a DP fan.

WELL....
theweaponx - 9/11/2012, 11:32 PM
Garth Ennis should have done it, as he should do all max titles

The deadpool max would have been great if ennis did it
damntree - 9/12/2012, 5:01 AM
Real world wolverine falls in a river and drowns because he's too heavy to swim.
CaptainTumeria - 9/12/2012, 9:44 AM
The "Real World" approach is just the current trend. It breathed Batman back to life (in film) and made a crap-ton of money. I'm all for writers creating their own take on characters but if you look at the history of Wolvie, he's already about as real-world as you can get and still have powers. This series should be looked at as an opportunity to tell his story with limited censorship (Imagine if a show like "Wolverine & The X-Men" was featured on Starz instead of network TV!)
Tell the whole story about Logan. The man's had a hard life and that life has been going on for 100+ years. Any "Real World" person in that situation would be in a constant struggle to hold on to anything resembling morals.
