ARROW: Katie Cassidy On Possibly Becoming Black Canary

As we know, Cassidy will play Laurel Lance in the CW's take on DC Comics' Emerald Archer Green Arrow, but will we see her don a costume herself and become the 'Black Canary'? Cassidy thinks it will "probably happen" eventually..

When Katie Cassidy was cast as Laurel Lance in the CW's Arrow, fans wondered if this character - better known to comic fans as Dinah Laurel Lance - would eventually throw on a pair of fishnets and fight crime alongside Oliver Queen as Black Canary. But when it was revealed that this take on Green Arrow would be jettisoning the superpowers, it seemed unlikely - at least not any version of the character that retained her 'sonic scream'. Of course that doesn't mean we won't see Cassidy suit up as a de-powered version of Black Canary at some point. In the following interview with, the actress discusses the possibilities, and how knowing the story behind the character in the comics affected her audition/performance..

“When I originally had auditioned for this part, I basically came up with a back story that was legitimate to the material that I was given—the pilot. Creating back story to make this person as authentic as possible, I did a little bit of research, but I also, at that point, didn’t consider the Black Canary because I didn’t know. When – if [she becomes Black Canary] is always still a question. You never know with these writers; they could do anything. I try not to think about that at this point because I think sometimes I can get in my own way if I over-think it. I think as far as the Black Canary goes, it will probably happen very organically. I know that Laurel is very strong, very tough. She comes from a middle class family; her father’s a cop; she knows how to fight. It will be something that happens organically, and it’s probably going to be pretty cool."

Arrow premieres on the CW this Wednesday, and you can check out the full interview with Cassidy by clicking the link below.

if she becomes black canary then there is a possibility foe birds of prey to appear in the future episodes of the arrow
mrHJK - 10/7/2012, 7:33 AM
Girl signed up to play Black Canary and didn't even know it. Sounds like such a promising show.. :/
Why even use Dinah if you're not going to make her Canary?

She's sexy,so eye-candy for the male viewers is established but if you want the guys to keep coming back..put her in the fishnet stockings!

RobLiefeldFan - 10/7/2012, 7:42 AM
im not GAY though and GOD forbid it but i would like her as lady not to consider the fishnet costume of the black canary it's kind off demeaning for women they should just give her a normal good costume imo
KingG - 10/7/2012, 7:54 AM
I think this is something like the approach to TDK trilogy, although I don't like the fact that they're 'DUMBING' down her abilities, I would like to see where they take this.

I would tap that, Katie's hot. I think I saw one of her tities poking out of that suit, I'm definitely watching this. Oh and of course because I'm a fan of GREEN ARROW.
HellsHammer - 10/7/2012, 7:59 AM
Fishnet stockings for black canary or GTFO!
thatdylhooper - 10/7/2012, 8:21 AM
@rob... That's pretty gay
RobLiefeldFan - 10/7/2012, 8:45 AM
@thatdylhooper im not gay and it's pretty weird and just demeaning for women that is all and i highly doubt she will be black canary in the show.

@hellshammer im looking forward to the show a lot but i dont want her in that costume it is demeaning to people never try to please your cock rather think with your mind and speak the right thing
HellsHammer - 10/7/2012, 10:01 AM
It's not anything for our 'cock' lol. It's called source material. Lol
damntree - 10/7/2012, 10:08 AM
How are fishnets demeaning? Women wear them all the time. It's just a stocking.
HellsHammer - 10/7/2012, 10:09 AM
He's just looking for a little controversy
Mego - 10/7/2012, 10:14 AM
@RobLiefeldFan It makes no sense how Wonder Woman and Black Canary dress.
In reality, if they dressed like that, every guy would assume they are nymphos and they would definitely be trying to draw attention to their bodies.
If the JL men were real, you would have them hitting on them and talking about them and what they would do to them and etc.
The public would attach labels to them and you would have womens groups pissed about it. Wonder Woman and Canary, Power Girl, Supergirl would be looked at as eye candy and treated with the seriousness of the Baywatch girls.
And when they get captured by the bad guys there would be sexual assaults taking place.
And the lack of clothing on knees and butts would lead to cuts, scrapes, scars all over them. Every time one of them gets thrown, or crashes through a wall there would be cuts. So why would you have Batman armored head to toe, but virtually every female hero with exposed chests, legs, asses and most only wearing stockings?
Why would the females not want to protect their bodies from battle damage?
That makes all the female far more courageous than the males who cover up in armor.

Comics try to be realistic but female superheros dressed for Sex is one dumb idea they just can't let go.
Mego - 10/7/2012, 10:22 AM
@JonathaNisMagnuM Why would they or any other film or TV show need to follow comics that closely?
Are comic book creators so great that their ideas are never to be questioned and must be followed by others?
Absolutely not.
In most cases the changes in live action adaptions are improvements and what looks good in drawings doesnt always look good in live action.
Directors and writers don't go to school to learn how to do live action versions of some comic creators ideas.
If they do CBMs or CBTV, they will bring their own talent and ideas to the job not merely be a vessel for some other guys ideas.

To everyone on this site using source material as an excuse let me tell you something as a comic book fan it is stupid just because it looks good in the comics does not mean it will look good in real life it would make women feel for demeaning in the eyes of men, we should learn to give women respect they deserve and a woman of kate's stature will definitely not put on those fishnets because it iis stupid and demeaning for her as a person and not as a comic book character... and a real comic book fan will know that i am speaking the truth
damntree - 10/7/2012, 12:19 PM
Robliefeldfan is a sexist trying to disguise himself as an apologist.
RSDhillon - 10/7/2012, 12:22 PM
I agree with Darkmetal 100%. The fact that some of you would be upset over her NOT wearing fishnets in a Canary costume is ridiculous.
AlternateNo4 - 10/7/2012, 1:10 PM
fishnet bodysuit ftw! and a green thong for ollie.
PeterParker1991 - 10/7/2012, 2:05 PM
Look at it like this: Smallville had that "No tights, flights" thing for the first six seasons. When the original writers left that eventually changed. In other words, Eventually we will see Black Canary on Arrow with her scream. It's gonna happen
damntree - 10/7/2012, 2:22 PM
I think it's funny they find powers and tights too unrealistic but a guy running around town in a green hoodie fighting crime with a [frick]ing bow and arrow is ok.

Optimus83 - 10/7/2012, 3:15 PM
I love Black Canary. ...
HellsHammer - 10/7/2012, 3:45 PM
My girlfriend wears stockings because she likes to. Is that demeaning?
Ranger14 - 10/7/2012, 6:22 PM
I don't think anyone is saying something needs to be exact to the source. A decent reflection of the source look would be nice and it can be done well. The Avengers proved that. There was no mistaking who the characters, both heroes and villain were by just looking at them.
mgeoff88 - 10/7/2012, 6:27 PM
I think she would be great as Black Canary, so I hope it happens.

I know she'll be Black Canary sans Canary Cry, but she still has her martial arts training at her disposal. She will still kick ass!

@RobLiefeldFan In real life, some girls actually like wearing stockings. You saying it's demeaning to women isn't a completely valid statement.

Personally, I like a little mystery when it comes to women, you know, it doesn't really matter if she's not wearing fishnet stockings. If she ends up wearing tights or pants instead, that's not a deal breaker for me. As long as her character is true to the source material(origins, personality, well adapted costume[fishnet stockings not necessary]) and she kicks ass, then I'm good.
TheSoulEater - 10/7/2012, 6:38 PM

AlternateNo4 - 10/7/2012, 8:58 PM
source excuse or not, there's no reason not to use the nets. they are NOT demeaning in and of themselves... like jonathanismagnum said, it's not the STOCKINGS that are slutty, it's the tight spandex and the thong-cut bodysuit. she can wear shorts with the stockings like my gf does, and it'll be fine. i mean, plenty of women wear nets to the OFFICE as long as their skirt is mid-thigh or lower. true, they're not vital, but it's even MORE silly to dump them for some uptight prudes like RLF up there.
AlternateNo4 - 10/7/2012, 8:58 PM
and i for one hope they go with the powers before long.
dekexz19 - 10/7/2012, 9:44 PM
Guys calm down marc has already confirmed she will become Black Canary. She will become Canary later than you want but sooner than you'd expect.Atleast, thats what he said at comic-con.
RobLiefeldFan - 10/8/2012, 4:07 AM
All of you supporting fishnets are boys who don't see real girls except the ones on the internet.. And any girl that likes wearing fishnets even if its your girlfriend (yes I'm talking to you hellshammer) is a typical hoe who will lay around with anybody that has a stick inbetween his legs

@mrgeoff88 I like it when comics are true to the source material but in real life Fishnet stocking will never work and I have already said it before only girls without dignity who rather thinks her life is a game and she doesn't respect herself would were fishnets just to please some male comicbook fans... I recently took a survey in my class a minute ago all the girls said it would be stupid for a girl like kate cassidy to put on fishnets just to please male nerds infact they were highly disgusted in her costume.. One went as far as saying that is why she stopped reading dynamite's line of comics...

And for me finally all I'll say is we know it's wrong, you know it's wrong she knows it's stupid and the producers know it's wrong.. Let's think with our brains and not with our cocks
HellsHammer - 10/8/2012, 5:06 AM
Aww poor baby still probably upset that he hasn't lost his virginity. I wont lie u just pissed me off. dont worry though Karmas a
Bitch buddy, I hope u get what u deserve for calling my girlfriend a skank when in fact she is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I'm just going to ignore you from here on out, the point you have been pathetically trying to make is both stup
HellsHammer - 10/8/2012, 5:07 AM
Stupid and hilarious
HellsHammer - 10/8/2012, 5:20 AM
In the end the only thing that is demeaning the women is YOU who is judging them about what they wear and also YOU are saying they all feel like men and society looks down on them for it when in fact no one even cares because it isn't even that serious. Most girls I know my girlfriend especially wears them maturely she doesn't look like a SKANK.
You knocking a fictional superhero lil guy. Why aren't you knocking zatanna who wears fishnets or Wonder Woman who only wears a top and underwear?
AlternateNo4 - 10/8/2012, 6:35 AM
@RLF you took a survey but you asked a leading question, so its invalid. did you ask, "raise your hands if you think any girl that wears net stockings is a typical hoe who will lay around with anybody that has a stick inbetween his legs"? i doubt you'd get the same response.

plus your use of the term "lay around" marks you as somone that is uncomfortable with the idea of sexuality in the first place, so your bias removes you from the conversation... i wouldn't care what larry flynt or hugh hefner had to say on this matter, nor do i care what jerry falwell has to say... or you.

if hating the sight of thighs and bosoms is a comfortable place for you, enjoy. but if your anger is masking a fear of women or an inverted hatred of men and women that are comfortable with sexuality, seek help. the point is this is a comic book website, and you are WAY over the line in terms of your reaction to this minor issue regarding a fictional character. elevating a disagreement to the point of labeling other members' significant others as whores is ridiculous and childish, and could be a sign of a genuine neurosis.
damntree - 10/8/2012, 3:20 PM
What a [frick]ing idiot. Use your brain man; you're attaching morality to fashion. So, anyone who doesn't conform to what your prude ass thinks is right is now a whore? You got a lot of growing up to do. You might want to keep that opinion to yourself out in public.

What about these skimpy outfits? Are these guys whores too? Sexist piece of shit.

mgeoff88 - 10/8/2012, 5:49 PM
@RobLiefeldFan I understand what you're are saying, and like I said, the fishnet stockings aren't necessary. And yes, they aren't practical when fighting criminals and supervillains.

But you don't talk about girls like that and you certainly don't talk about a guy's girlfriend like that! Just because a girl wears that, it doesn't make her any less of a woman! You know, that doesn't automatically means she's promiscuous.

You can tell she's a real party girl. :P Seriously, when I look at that, I see a cute, wholesome girl with a interesting sense of style. FYI, those are fishnet stockings. Case closed.
mgeoff88 - 10/9/2012, 6:39 PM
@MrEko Hey, thanks, man. I think you're mad chill too.

And nice gif.
fufu - 11/5/2012, 9:19 AM
The actor who plays Arrow looks seriously bad-ass. Great abs! He could beat up average-Joe for sure. Will Katie Cassidy look tight and athletic too, as Black Canary? Will we get to see some serious abs and muscle? Will it be half-way believable that she can beat up average-Joe as well? They got a good-looking actress – now it is time to hit the gym! Katie: create a superheroine that truly has the athletic looks to pull it off! That could be an entirely new era. [IMG][/IMG]
