TDKR: Sir Michael Caine Reveals Alfred's Back-Story In New Interview

Well, it's actually Caine's own invented back-story for Bruce Wayne's faithful butler, but it's a good one! In a brand new interview to celebrate the home release of The Dark Knight Rises, the veteran actor also talks about Christopher Nolan's directing style..

We never get to find out too much about Alfred's past in Christopher Nolan's batman trilogy, aside from a few hints here and there (we know he was ex Special Forces for example) so in the following interview snippet released by Warner Bros UK, we hear for the first time the actor's invented back-story for the character, and how he came to be in the service of the Wayne family..

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises” is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

The Dark Knight Rises is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. You can check out my review of the Blu-ray and the special features included Here

Just as I was about to do meself in..my ol mate from the knocking shop told me about a sweet lil job in a place called Gotham, rich family with a nice tidy sum locked away in the safe. So there I am in Yank land about to knock off thse posh sods when me ol mate blew the safe and the money...so there I am shouting at the twit since he was only supposed to blow the bloody doors off..when who should walk in..only the bloody Septic Tanks

anyway to cut a long story short...I got done for criminal damage and attempted robbery..but the soppy sod Wayne family took me in on community service

And that's where ive been since...30 bloody years and no paycheque

What a sweet old guy. Who wouldn't want to just sit down in front of a fire and listen to film stories from him all day? A true gentleman.

I think the first time I saw him was when my mother took me to see The Hand, a horror film, when I was 11 years old. A mezmerizing and creepy movie, especially when you are that young. And he was EXCELLENT in it.

I even liked him in Jaws 4.

I can't help but hear/read his stuff in his voice. He's like the Morgan Freeman of the U.K. to me....there's an idea; remake"Grumpy old men" with Michael Caine & Morgan Freeman.

Pat Hingle invented his own bio for Commisioner Gordon in the previous four Bat-movies that was printed in the official making of books for those films, in which he said, in his mind, he was a beat cop, when Bruce Wayne's folks were shot down and was the first one on the scene and comforted the young Wayne. This was never a part of the comics mythology, but has become a large part of the Nolan movies, so much so that it was reiterated at the end of the franchise. Goyer will have read those making of books, being a real big Batman fan.
So this bio of Caine's could very well make it into the script of a future reboot. Who knows?
