The 24th annual GLAAD Media Award nominees have been revealed. Here are the nominations in the "Outstanding Comic Book" category..

Astonishing X-Men by Marjorie Liu
Marvel

Batwoman by W. Haden Blackman, J.H. Williams III
DC Comics

Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Andrew Chambliss, Scott Allie, Jane Espenson, Drew Z. Greenberg
Dark Horse

Earth 2 by James Robinson

Kevin Keller by Dan Parent
Archie Comics

So we have the same-sex marriage from Astonishing X-Men, a lesbian main character in Batwoman (which won last year), the gay slayer from Buffy, a gay Green Lantern in Earth 2 and I have no idea who Kevin Keller is but I'm gonna assume he's a gay Archie character? Anyway, who do you think should win? There are lots of other categories, with movies such as Cloud Atlas and Paranorman picking up noms so be sure to click the link below to check them out.

The Earth 2 bits with Alan Scott were really well done
wish he'd feature more prominently

Just curious though, does this honestly warrant an actual Award? I mean, consider this.
I was raised in the middle east (i'm not arab myself). I like how Baz is a bad-ass in the current GL series, but i'm not gonna give Geoff an award for representing an arab character in comics.
Want equality? Don't ask to be put on a pedestal.

Yeah, we should have awards for white characters too. :p
" The 50th Annual White People in Media Awards!"

I see your point getsuga, theyre always saying they want to be treated equally, yet they have their own awards, their own channel, even their own gay bars.lol

They are not asking to be "put on a pedestal", the awards recognize the positive change in attitude towards that community over the years, which were sorely needed at one point..though evidently some more work needs to be done outside of the media.

By the way GetsugaTensho22, there are similar awards and award ceremonies for other minorities, black and Latino included.

Pretty tough competition there. I'd say Astonishing X-Men or Kevin Keller wins. Still, Batwoman is a better comic than either, with better characterization; it just hasn't focused as closely on gay issues, although the subplots are there, and are quite strong.

I think it's funny seeing everyone in costume at a wedding. I know it's tradition, dating back to Fantastic Four, but it looks silly. Especially Wolverine in his yellow.

I couldn't say, I haven't read comics since 2008.

Incidentally I don't think any of the above stories were particularly well done (out of what I've read anyway) so I'd go with Batwoman again, she's a great character even if some of her arcs aren't the best.

Batwomans and EArth 2 are shit. give it to ASX, good comic.

Quasimodo, I realize this is not the place for this, but "they" are me and I'm a 30 something femme gay lady in the San Francisco Bay Area who cannot legally marry my wife. I would really like to be able to do that. We are both attorneys and rad people and contributing members of society. And FYI, gay bars are waaaaay more fun than straight bars. Stronger drinks too!

That was one of the things I loved the most about Batwoman. As excited as I was to have a lead lesbian character and such a cool one to boot, the fact they do not go on and on about gay issues is the main reason I kept reading.
I do not want to have it thrown in my face every other page and I'm a lesbian myself.
Foolkiller - 1/16/2013, 11:37 AM
I haven;t read any of the others, but as a comic Astonishing X-Men hasn't been that impressive in quite a while. I don't get the change in Northstar's character. He used to be arrogant. Now he comes across as a twee late teen.

LOVE Batwoman, I just wish they didn't have to alternate between JHW III and Trevor McCarthy on art duties.

I understand why they'd have to but it always lets me down. Not to take anything away from McCarthy, but Williams III is masterful.

@Quasimodo. As a "They" man i ask, What do you think BET and Telemundo We have our own channels, bars, and awards be cause Americas Bigotry does not let us in the mainstream media and likes to pretend that their aren't gay men and woman in everyday life.
