Ok so i know that father's day has passed, but this question has been on my mind for a while. The question is should heroes have kids? I mean we know of heroes that have them like spiderman has mayday parker, Batman has damien, and wolverine has daken. however it seems to me that only a few people really like the kids of superheroes and it has just bothered me. i know the debate of whether heroes should die has come around once or twice but if they would have kids wouldn't that make them even more human and make it to where when they die they have someone to continue the fight. I mean granted alot of the reason that fans don't like the kids of superheroes is because alot of the kids are bastard children of our favorite heroes but still should we hate them for being bastard children? I just saw how everyone hated that in superman returns people practically wanted to kill singer for allowing superman to have a bastard son. i have also heard to many people complain of daken and damien, but are you comaplining only becuase they are bastard children or do you not like the fact that your heroes can have kids?

All these questions come from the fact that i found out i am going to be a dad myself and i was wondering about superhero dads and why people hated their kids so much.

Thanks for listening and remember i am just chasing cars i still have no clue what i would do if i caught one. lol sorry everyone else has some catching thing after an article i thought i would do one too.

Peace
T.J.

I actually like the idea of heroes having children - and villains, as well. But I'd like to see better execution.

I think, in general, the writers tend to get caught up in "How do we make this character like their parent, and how do we make them different" rather than making the character unique, and letting them evolve naturally out of their own circumstances. Because of that it always feel contrived, and poorly written.
dogchasingcars - 6/26/2009, 9:23 AM
sorry it was more to the fact that people get pissy about big characters that rarely fall in love having kids. like if capt. america had a kid i think people would get pissy for some unknown reason
LEEE777 - 6/26/2009, 10:56 AM

@ Pietro what happen to your last article?
Well I don't have a problem with Heros having children, but don't over mixed them with other powers that don't make sense. Why did they even let Luke Cage have a child with whats her name?

dellamorte1872 - 6/26/2009, 3:41 PM
in all honesty @spock, BENDIS had luke and the alias chick who he "made up as a one time avenger" because he wanted to do the first interpretation of a comic book INTERRACIAL marriage. he didnt intend to marry them off and give em a kid right away but throughout alias brief run he said it made sense to take that situation into that direction

that said... i hate DAMIAN and DAKEN. they both came out of :eslseworld like" tales that suddenly became canon because the industry wants to show "dark aspects" of those characters, but from a safer distance than say...WOLVERINE becoming DEATH very shortly. SKAAR is a gay concept too (personal oppinion). others like LUNA, WICCAN, etc. i dont care about b/c i never have cared about those "concepts". i do like PIETRO AND WANDA THOUGH SO IF THOSE KIDS STICK AROUND I GIVE EM A PASS. same with MAYDAY. i dont like SUPERMAN RETURNS though. what happens when LOIS tanned herself? the kid woulda kicked through her stomach becuse of the YELLOW SUN lol
Spock - 6/26/2009, 3:45 PM
Thanks, I've missed that run. Havent' bought anything new since the Skrull invasion.
JoshWilding - 6/26/2009, 3:49 PM
it depends how well it works i guess-it works brilliantly in Fantastic Four-Franklin and Val are two great characters (and that scen in Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #4 where Franklin in a Spider-Man mask confronts Norman Osborn was great!) Some heroes it just wouldnt work with though such as, in my opinion, Spider-Man.
dellamorte1872 - 6/26/2009, 3:51 PM
it would give MJ something to do lol
ALmighty1080 - 6/26/2009, 5:36 PM
for a movie, hell no. The last thing i want is to see a mini batman or mini wolverine running around fighting with their fathers. Maybe in a book or in the comics its not a big deal because you have so many issues to release but in a movie theres just not enough screen time to give a child enough screen time and give him a reason to be there without taking away all the action and good stuff that make superhero movies so goood
SlurpeeGuy - 6/26/2009, 6:58 PM
I like Flashes kids.
Daken is just a boring Sabertooth knockoff, Damian is annoying, and Superman can't breed with humans.
The main problem with super hero's kids (Franklin, Cable, Rachel, Legion, Proteus...) is that they are too overpowered.
Osiris - 6/26/2009, 9:43 PM
Franklin Richards is my favorite Superhero spawn, I mean for fracking sake he helped take out onslaught, how bad ass is that.
THEHAWK - 6/26/2009, 10:40 PM
Lets take a look at some of the other notable kids

Cable-Son of Cyclops and the Goblin Queen. He was bred by Mr. Sinister to be the ultimate warrior and kill Apocalypse. He had unlimited telepathic potential until he was infected with a Techno Organic virus. He then was sent to the future where he killed Apocalypse.

Genesis-Son of Cable. He was kidnapped and brainwashed by Stryfe and later tried to succeed Apocalypse.

Franklin Richards- Son of Reed and Susan Richards. He has nearly unlimited powers! He was the center of one of Marvel's biggest crossover events :Onslaught

Wally West's first set of twins-Zoom caused a miscarriage and Flash use the Time Tredmill(I think thats the name) to erase the event form everyones memory.

There are too many more to write adn i'm hung over good night.
hitmanjustin - 6/27/2009, 12:24 AM
aquaman had a son dont know his name
dellamorte1872 - 6/27/2009, 9:23 AM
CABLE is the best of the "kid concept" in comics BECAUSE he was sent into the future and aged alot before returning. franklin richards i can tolerate b/c he was ALMOST always around. VALERIA was [frick]ed with by MILLAR and now shes super smart?!? thats corny...RACHEL/PHEONIX II is hard to explain away in a believable light (alternate dimensions and time travel shit) why do you think BRUBAKER sent her away to stay with the STARJAMMERS? the FLASH TWINS JAI AND IRIS? suck, they're annoying. and GREEN ARROW's kid i never liked b/c he seemed like the "OLIVER QUEEN-LITE". then you get horrrendous ideas like i discussed earlier DAKEN and DAMIAN they were spawned in "ELSEWORLDS" tales that are suddenly canon b/c the big two need to find a way to let those concepts live on and yet grow darker (like a killing x-government assassin or the DARK kinght himself isnt enough!). I find that the idea of having characters in comics have children is sometimes alright in small, explainable doses. but look at the UTLIMATE UNIVERSE for example only, illegitimate children and half brothers come popping out of the wood work for story potential. like the new baby LUKE CAGE has with that chick from ALIAS is done just for shock value and political reasons/demographics, b/c it is the first interracial baby ever in the MARVEL UNIVERSE. i dont want excuses, i just want organic characters that dont TRY to "make a statement" by adding a kid to the mix. the real world dont work like that why should this mythology?
dogchasingcars - 6/27/2009, 10:22 AM
wow i thought this article was going to get overlooked i am glad you guys commented on it
Spock - 6/28/2009, 6:36 AM
I was referring to the Trivia one!!!

Imran - 6/28/2009, 9:44 AM
Sweet article

I guess it becomes a problem when established superheroes ala Superman decides to have unknown offspring.. or more so when they introduce it in a "film adaptation" rather than a comic..

It was cool in Justice League Unlimited when they went to the future and saw Hawkgirl/Green Lantern's kid

Nightcrawler is the best! Mystique is a milf! lol

Congrats to author for finding out about parenthood! Wish you all the best..
Supermike - 6/28/2009, 11:02 AM
It depends if its like Terry wayne and Conner Kent Im ok with it but I don't know I do find it funny how everyone was piss about Batman and Superman having kids in the tv show and movie but were piss when the kids were not put in the comics after the show and movie were over
dogchasingcars - 6/29/2009, 5:22 AM
wow i got a supermike post now my article has no limits lol
iNsaneMilesy - 6/30/2009, 7:21 AM
I assume we've all seen Mallrats. There's your reason why the "KID THING" didn't make sense in Superman Returns.

I'd actually welcome the prospect of more superheroes having children, it would add another element to the character and creat the possiblity of also turning said character into a legacy role.
dellamorte1872 - 6/30/2009, 7:36 AM
@INSANEMILESY

THE ARGUMENT MAY BE IN PART INSPIRED BY "MALLRATS" BUT THERE IS VALIDITY TO BRODY'S ARGUMENTS. AND EITHER WAY IF YOU WANNA USE HIS RATIONALS OR NOT, ANY WAY YOU CUT IT, "SUPERMAN RETURNS" SUCKED!

certain characters are allowable or excusable or whatever. but there havent been any in my opinion recently. just crappy resurrections
Supermike - 6/30/2009, 7:48 AM
@Dellamorte1872 I would't say superman return suck I would say it was for people who knew superman the real superman
dogchasingcars - 6/30/2009, 7:58 AM
@pietro well i had a comment from the hawk so you can see why i said it had no limits
TheMyth - 6/30/2009, 3:09 PM
Supermike, would that be the flaming homo superman?

dogchasingcars, good question... valid one too. For me, especially in the instance of Daken, its simply the concept of the character itself that piss' me off. I actually like X-23 and all the circumstances that brought her about and feel she is a great 'passing of the torch' legacy character some above poster's have referred to. Daken however, not only seems to be a hastily composed character meant to capitalize on the concept of X-23, but also is just an outright attempt to out-brutalize Wolverine and Sabertooth, so much so that it feels forced. Daken ranks with Superman to me me in terms of worst characters ever conceived.

On the other hand there have been many heroes to birth children with great popularity. Cable is a prime example, even with the convoluted time travel surrounding his origin, who doesn't like Cable. Franklin Richards is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Nightcrawler is himself the son of Mystique. All of those characters have been widely accepted as well as even enjoying great popularity. In all it just depends on the circumstances in which we are introduced to these children. You can't just say, "Hey, it would be so cool to make Bats a father." It requires more care than that and it also should fit the character itself. Bruce Wayne just doesn't fit as a father to me. Could you imagine Frank Castle having more children now? lol. This applies to many characters, while others seem almost perfect for the role of parent at some point. For the most part, I would have to disagree with heroes having children, at least 90% of them anyway.

As far as bastard children go, lol, with characters like Gambit and Tony Stark, you kind of expect one to show up at some point lol.

Pietro, what happened to your article, "What Hero would you be?" Did CBM delete it? I Love stuff like that. I made an article a few months ago I released titled, "What are your superpowers?" which was more along the lines of what powers would you want rather than what character you'd want to portray. I left i long comment there, but when I checked this morning the article was gone.
TheMyth - 6/30/2009, 3:28 PM
Dellemorte, "i dont want excuses, i just want organic characters that dont TRY to "make a statement" by adding a kid to the mix. the real world dont work like that why should this mythology?" That is exactly how I feel about this subject quite often myself.
dogchasingcars - 6/30/2009, 5:09 PM
hey thanks myth it was just a question i had come to mind i have a few other question too i'm gonna leave up to you guys to discuss. i am also thinking up an idea for a grapic novel that i am going to write article about and see what you guys think
iNsaneMilesy - 6/30/2009, 7:42 PM
@dellamorte1872

Of corse the movie sucked, I was just giving my reason for the kid issue. I haven't liked superman since the Max Fleisher 1940's cartoons.
dellamorte1872 - 7/1/2009, 3:45 PM
its all good bro i just cant get into the "superhero parents concept" it works with the FF4 b/c they were sold to the public as the first superhero FAMILY. but when kids are just thrown in to boost sales or grab new readers, thats just crappy LOOK AT "DARK" WOLVERINE. when STEVE ROGERS has a kid HE just finds out about that happens to be the ULT. RED SKULL. that just sucks story wise!
