Despite an offer being sent out to Doctor Who alum Matt Smith, it appears Adam Driver is still a possibility for Fantastic Four's Reed Richards. Why is Marvel Studios struggling to assemble this team?

We've been sifting our way through Fantastic Four casting rumours for several months now. While many of them have surely been bogus (Mila Kunis as The Thing, anyone?), there's bound to be some truth to what we've seen.

For a time, it looked like Marvel Studios has tapped Adam Driver, Margot Robbie, Paul Mescal, and Daveed Diggs to play Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing. It's a terrific cast...which later appeared to fall apart.

According to one online scooper, that foursome is who director Matt Shakman hoped to cast as Marvel's First Family. However, they all passed, suggesting none of them were blown away by what they saw in the script.

That's now undergone a number of rewrites and was about to receive another before the WGA strike began. Recently, we learned Driver chose not to play Reed Richards as he couldn't connect with what was on the page, a troubling sign for this Marvel Studios reboot.

The previous Fantastic Four movies all failed and if this effort follows suit, that's likely it for these heroes on screen (a waste of a franchise which has the potential to be as successful as The Avengers).

While an offer has seemingly gone out to Matt Smith, it appears Driver is still on the table. Of the two, he's by far the better actor; while Smith has impressed in House of the Dragon, he has a dismal track record on the big screen after starring in flops like Terminator Genisys and Morbius.

It's previously been reported that Antonio Banderas will play Galactus; whether there's any truth to that, we simply don't know at this stage.

Fantastic Four is set to be released in theaters on February 14, 2025.

@MarvelZombie616 - why cancel?

Marvel has course corrected - the loki s2 trailer was great so everything is fine

@vectorsigma - A trailer can be great but the movie or show it's promoting could suck (and vice versa). Similarly, One show/movie produced by Marvel could be great, but another made about the same time could suck. We (whoever "we" are) won't know that everything is fine until we see another streak of good shows/movies from Marvel.

Maybe they've upped the offer and thought, "If we are offering Smith this much, might as well try Driver again" lol

Well i mean they struggled to cast Captain America too, while they tried to entice Chris into the role. I remember those days. Look how that turned out.

I have faith. Sarah Finn's hit rate is GOAT status so just let her do her thing.

@TheManWithoutFear - true, but i think the problem is the script sucks ass and no one wants in. but yes, Sarah has been fantastic (see what i did there) with casting to date

...i'll see myself out now

@TheManWithoutFear - I remember everyone saying Chris Evans was wrong for the role, too. And Evans nearly passed as well.

I'll admit I can't see Driver as Reed. But I'm happy to have my mind changed. He's a good actor. I think for me it's his face. He doesn't look like Reed, and he's never played a character remotely similar to Reed.

My gold standard for the perfect Reed Richards is Jeffrey Combs in Reanimator. If I can see the actor pulling that role off, I'd bet they'd make a great Reed.

Script needs work so they’re not getting anywhere with this until after the strike, but I’d be happy with Smith as Reed, ngl

This movie needs an original script with a full redesign to the story.

Imagination must not be limited. Go into full throttle.

What if Reed Richards was a 12-13 year old child, saved by Kang, seconds before the snap?

He is accidentally sent back to the early 1940s, and raised by his great-grandfather, growing into his own, as an elite scholar in the 60s.

Reed is constantly researching ways to manipulate space-time theories, as well as genetic developments, hoping to get back to a time no one else can fully comprehend.

Can you dig it? 😬

@VictorAlonzo - how can he save him from the snap?
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 8/2/2023, 11:53 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Kang can save Reed by sending Reed back in time.

Remember: Kang has seen what happened in the end END. He should have a hand in both the Endagame, as well as the upbringing of Reed Richards.

It'd make sense to try to bring one to correct the most cataclysmic events in human history.

The only unforseen byproduct of bringing Reed back in time:

The corruption of one named Victor Von Doom.

@AmazingFILMporg - I read this thing called a comic book.

I also watched a few failed attempts that followed formulas which were popular in Hollywood, but not in the spirit of the story.

Your use of clown face is... you know what? Nevermind.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 8/2/2023, 11:58 AM
@VictorAlonzo - nvm I get what you mean my brain had a blank moment thinking the snap went through time but of course he didn’t it was basically an energy wave that wiped out shit so as long as you avoided when it happened you’re good

But eh idk I’m kinda fine with their modern day people not too into the idea of they been lost since the 60s etc etc
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 8/2/2023, 2:51 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - That's understandable, but I like the idea of F4's genesis in the 60s. It just makes the stories pop in my mind.

I like the idea of Reed being so smart, because he has a literal foreknowledge of furture things.

This is why the preteen age is also important.

Imagine the time displacement ONLY happening to Reed, at an age where he's too young to fully understand the details to mechanisms/science, but he's old enough to remember.

Add that familarity to his pre-passion for science from his youth, with the presnapped MARVEL. He looks up to this new guy called Spider-Man. Yet he keeps that a secret once he travels back in time, so he won't disrupt the creation later. He also has little to no success making people believe anything else, so he chooses not to even try explaining Spider-Man.

In this story, Reed has to deal with no one understanding his memories of the future. He makes friends along the way, like Susan and Ben, who both love/admire his passion for lining scientific dots together (from things he remembers with things science has yet to fathom).

This passion stays with him throughout his life.

He makes remarkable advancements in science and physics, hoping to understand both his timeline, AND the further futuristic mechanics used when Kang took him back to the 60s.

He's been trying to create things that are incomprehensible to everyone around him.

I think this could make a great origin point to F4.

It'd also make a great lead-up to how Reed would feel after seeing Kang again...

I know an actor that’s the right age and look for the part, however, his acting skills are very weak.

Driver’s just not gonna do it. A lot of the excitement of this film for me was seeing someone like Driver in this role, and Smith - while really good in HOTD - is just a substantially more boring choice. His big budget movie picks haven’t been the best either, so we’ll see.
Honestly think Josh Hartnett would be a really great Reed, and I was never really impressed with him as an actor until this year

Timerider - 8/2/2023, 11:38 AM
@tmp3 - Josh Hartnett 15 years ago, but not now. He’s too old to play him.
tmp3
tmp3 - 8/2/2023, 11:46 AM
@Timerider - If Franklin’s like 10 then Hartnett makes sense, but your right with that maybe being too old for introducing Reed. Just feel like he’d be so good in something like this after Oppenheimer

I think Hartnett's phone is going to be ringing non stop after Oppenheimer. I wouldn't mind him as Reed. He looks great for his age and I like Reed with a little years/gray on him

tmp3 - 8/2/2023, 11:59 AM
@GhostDog - Black Mirror and Oppenheimer gave me a full 180 on him. Dude’s improved so much with age, looks like saying no to Batman and Superman actually paid off in the long-run lmao. Speaking of Superman, he’d be a great jor-el, especially with his superman connection, but hopefully he gets some more high profile roles regardless

@tmp3 - have been a Hartnett fan for a long time. Loved him in The Faculty, Pennydredful and Lucky Number Slevin... then saw him in Oppenheimer and was like DAMN... dude still got it and even better than i remember
