GODS OF EGYPT Director Posts Hate-Filled Rant Against Film Critics; Calls Them "Deranged Idiots"

As pretty much all of us predicted, Alex Proyas' Gods Of Egypt was not embraced by critics... to put it mildly. This hasn't sat very well with the director, who posted a lengthy tirade to his Facebook page...

Gods Of Egypt currently sits at 12% of Rotten Tomatoes, and has come in for quite a savaging from the majority of critics. It's also failed to make much of an impact at the box office because of strong competition from the likes of Fox's Deadpool, which is still performing very well after a couple of weeks on release.

The movie's director, Alex Proyas, has not taken too kindly to this, and has posted a lengthy response to his Facebook page. Here are some excerpts.

"I have never gotten great reviews… on any movie I’ve made really, apart from those by reviewers who think for themselves and make up their own opinions. Sadly those type of reviewers are nearly all dead. I guess I have the knack of rubbing reviewers the wrong way – always have. This time of course they have bigger axes to grind – they can rip into my movie while trying to make their mainly pale asses look so politically correct by screaming “white-wash!!!” like the deranged idiots they all are.

…this modern age of texting has rendered them less than worthless, so they will probably go the way of the dinosaur or the newspaper shortly – don’t movie-goers text their friends with what they thought of a movie? Seems most critics spend their time trying to work out what most people will want to hear. How do you do that? Why these days it is so easy… just surf the net to read other reviews or what bloggers are saying – no matter how misguided an opinion of a movie might be before it actually comes out. Lock a critic in a room with a movie no one has even seen and they will not know what to make of it. Because contrary to what a critic should probably be they have no personal taste or opinion, because they are basing their views on the status quo.

To sum up: if you're a critic that likes his movies you're one of the rare breed that "think for themselves", and of you don't you're a "deranged idiot". Gotcha.

To be fair, I haven't seen Gods Of Egypt (and after the frankly laughable trailers and clips - see below - I'm not sure I will), so I'll refrain from sticking my oar in here - but this rant from Proyas really does seem misjudged. If you've seen it, what are your thoughts? Does he have a point, or is the movie every bit as bad as the critical consensus would have us believe?
